I tried this game a year or so ago, was interesting enough for me to pick it up after the free trail and I did.

After a few days I realized it was the most boring monstrosity of a game I had ever played. After the gloss faded I realized I was spending 10 times more time traveling from point A to B to finish a mission than I was actually doing stuff like fighting rats, crafting, conversing WTF ever.

Then we add in the fact that my daughter couldn't technically play while my toon was training. I count the training of skills as playing as well. It IS a part of the game so yeah it's playing. This effectively meant that there was no family play time for us.

I don't mind travel time in games, god knows that is every game you're goign to spend time running back and forth, but when I can go take a big greazy crap and come back and still not be at my destination, something is seriously wrong with mechanics.

I've raised 3 kids and believe me I know patience, but that was just wrong. The graphics update was nice as I logged a trial recently just to check it out, the newbie tutorials have improved exponentially but the game play is still just the same ol same ol.

yeah i noticed this when i played too, i was cool with the taking a few hours to train, hell i was ok with the 2day ones. but thats as far as it should go in the way of training time. 30 days to up a skill an not be able to train any others while your doing it is effin nutty.

Well Alot of the skills that take 30 days to train up arent required until your about a year-2 years into the game. Lvl 5 skills get important for things like cap ships which arent used until your in a big allience and everyone likes you which takes away.

Then you were playing wrong. Complete objectives closer to you and work towards other stations, don't immediately go into a mission that requires you to go 30 jumps away.

Then we add in the fact that my daughter couldn't technically play while my toon was training. I count the training of skills as playing as well. It IS a part of the game so yeah it's playing. This effectively meant that there was no family play time for us.

I'm a bit confused by this statement.

Are you saying that because your daughter cannot train skills while your character is training skills she couldn't play the game?

This is intended. Quote from the EULA:

You may not share your Account with anyone, or allow anyone other than you personally (or your minor child, if you have registered an Account on behalf of your minor child) to access or use your Account. Joint or shared ownership or use of an Account by more than one user is prohibited.

(Note the bold before attempting to argue the "minor child" clause, in all honesty a "minor child" could not even begin to comprehend EVE).

And yes, two characters on the same account cannot play simultaneously. Just like, um... most (if not all) other MMOs.

I don't mind travel time in games, god knows that is every game you're goign to spend time running back and forth, but when I can go take a big greazy crap and come back and still not be at my destination, something is seriously wrong with mechanics.

Autopilot is designed to be slow, it is a lot faster to manually jump gates (AP jumps 1500m away from the gate/station and them moves towards it). How dare a game require you to actually play it to do anything? That's outrageous!

I've raised 3 kids and believe me I know patience, but that was just wrong. The graphics update was nice as I logged a trial recently just to check it out, the newbie tutorials have improved exponentially but the game play is still just the same ol same ol.

Oh dear, the self-proclaimed expert of patience couldn't stand EVE, this must mean that no one can tolerate it and the game must be failing miserably. Which would be true if the subscriptions weren't currently at 200k and steadily rising.

If you are spending a long time traveling, in most cases you are doing things wrong.  Its very important to pick you bases carefully, and work your missions efficiently to reduce travel time.  Also, never use autopilot, in addition to being painfully slow, you leave yourself wide open to suicide gankers, whom I recently fell victim to for the first time,  losing 100M ISK in cargo. ( I threw autopilot on to go grab a shower)

Second, mission running is only the beginning of the game.  You need to find a good corporation and progress to other activities like large scale mining, low sec combat, or relocating to 0.0, where the real action is at.

Finally, training in EVE is actually not a lot different than other games.  When you are online in a game like WOW, you can do activities and earn experience that leads to training new abilities.  When you are off line, or someone else plays your account on a different character, your original character does not advance in any way.

That is no different from EVE.  Where it varies is that training is tied to your rate of experience gain in a game like WOW, which can be signicantly affected/improved by an efficient player who spends a lot of time in the game playing.  Eve lets people train even when they are not logged on, (but at  the same constant rate) which makes it better for the casual player.

Sure, the first time you run into a 5 day training skill (11 if you don't have learning skills trained and implants) you gnash your teeth.  After playing for almost a year, I look at 5 day trains as no big deal, and only cringe when they exceed 14 days.

And those long skills, that take 14, 21, 30, or even 60 days to train?  They make sense, those are all for very advanced ships and abilities, and it makes sense that it takes more effort to reach those levels. (even in the effort is only in duration spent waiting).  In a game like Lineage 2, it can take a month or more  to gain a level once you are above level 60, (along with a ton of hard grinding) and in DAOC, its a long climb from Realm Rank 9 to Realm Rank 10.  At least in EVE there's no effort involved, just wait it out.

Of course, its not quite that simple, because merely training the skill doesn't get you in the ship, you do need to grind out the ISK, or earn it by crafting, trading or something else to earn the ISK you need to buy your 10 billion ISK ship.  So there is no escape from the grind, its just not the same as other games.

Not going to flame because I can see how the game can look like that.  Even I had the same experience early on.  I remember thinking what the hell do I do in this game?  However once you start looking at the deeper elements and large corp warfare the game is really second to none.  Only issue is its a second life and to run a succesful corp or even participate in one you need to be very serious and get involved with combat training, mining ops, invasions, defence etc.  Unfortunately I don't have the time these days and even though I still have 2 accounts (cant let go after 4 years) I rarely get on to play.  In a way the offline skill system works perfectly because I can take a long break and play another MMO and my skills keep going.  I am in the situation now where I am probably going to get booted from my corp because I am not online 2 hours a day minimum and helping with the war effort.  Perfect game if you want to get sucked into a very very large universe.

LOL, reminds me one time when my alliance decided to do a long distance OP against BOB.  We get ready to move our combat ships down to the POS set up for rallying and I find out its 85 jumps away.

I'm like, WTF?  Took us almost 3 hours to get there that night..and they said....set your jump clone, and tomorrow, bring out another ship.

LOL, I'm like, screw it...if this ship gets blown up, I'm done with this op.

Fortunately that op was called off in only two weeks, and I never died...until I tried to bring my ship back home and got nailed at a gatecamp about 5 jumps from empire.

Oh well, all in good fun....

Haha, we had that too. You know what we did? We just made some copies of our most important blueprints (rokh, mega etc.), then went in shuttles and jumped pre-fitted ships via carriers and motherships. The rest of the alliance went to the new staging in shuttles/pods, and the ships were shipped from the nearest tradinghub. We moved our industrialists, too, and they began producing battleships and ammo right at the frontline, with regular freighters shipping t2 modules from the tradinghubs. About once a week we scheduled a freighter-op where we shipped t2 ships and pos parts with freighters+escort+titans through aridia.

Logistics are a great part of eve warfare, and you have to prepare yourself. One major factor in wars is NOT the iskies, it is your supply chain. If you can supply your people with ships at lowest cost possible and keep the distances at minimum, you can fight for a long time without worries. We even produce most things in our homebase in 0.0 to optimize our logistics.

And even if you are in highsec only, your base of operation should be chosen with logistics in mind. Manufacturing slots available? Tradinghub nearby? Agents for Missionrunning? Maybe a Cosmos constellation nearby? What about a good system for mining, too? You will probably want to have several good agents, more than one tradinghub nearby. What about an icebelt? Locations for pos? Maybe a lowsec nearby?

People complain about Eve, that every system is the same. This is wrong! You can analyze the maps for lengthy periods of time to find a new hq, or a new outpost for your operations..

    2 things,

    1) maybe if you had listened to the tutorial you could be getting somewhere faster with the "warp to 0" command that puts you right on top of anything. Missions are only a jump or two away, and

    2) there is no limit to the number of trial accounts you can hold at one time, so there is no reason your daughter could not have played at the same time.

The SOLUTIONS are out there, this is what the help channel is for, as well as the EVE Academy corporation, for new players.

i don't have a flame, but a question or two.   you stated that your daughter's toon couldn't skill up while your toon was skilling up, so you couldn't have "family" play time.

that means you were planning on playing two toons, from one account, simultaneously?

i wasn't aware that there were pay-to-play MMOs that allowed you to have multiple toons logged in from one account?

travel time in eve CAN be an annoyance, if you are always travelling from one end of the universe to another.  if travel time is your complaint -- eve is DEFINITELY not the game for you.

the god-awful pvp mechanics and lag that accompanies the forced-blob-warfare are what bother me.  if travel time were the problem, i'd be happier than a hog in slop.  jump clones, jump-to-0, and my not needing to travel 50 systems to get to my destinations, kinda make the travel time a non-issue for me.

i could be misunderstanding your 'family time play' definition; but, when i think about family play time in an MMO, it normally means i'm actually playing my toon at the same time as someone else.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
