Transferring Files and Connecting Computers Part 2

Hallo. I would first like to thank all the people who have given me help in the past. And now, I ask for more image.

I currently have 2 computers. 1 is a desktop running WinXP Pro. The other is a laptop running WinXP Home. I have a Category 5 internet cable that is used for 2 things: 1) To connect the desktop's network card and my cable modem. 2) To connect my laptop's network card and the Cat5 jack in my dorm room.

What I need to do, is connect the 2 computers using this Cat5 cord so that I can transfer files from one harddrive to another simply and easily. Also, this will be a temporary connection and will not last more than a day or so.

Can anyone clue me in on exactly how to do this? Dont just tell me "plug the cord in both comps and set up a network connection" cause thatll just get you a kick in the balls image. If you can tell me, or direct me to a place so I can find out exactly how to do this, I will be very grateful.

Right-click your start menu and go to explore, at the bottem is the network folder, move all the files into it, I think it should work. Might help to make a new folder so you can transfer it all at once.

  • el_Slackoel_Slacko Member Posts: 310

That doesnt help much. The 2 computers arent linked by windows or software in any way. I dont even think they recognize each other. They actually arent connected right now since I have to disconnect one of the cables to use the internet. Also, which network folder? 'My Network Places"? Under that is a folder called 'SharedDocs on main (Home)'.

    Any other advice people?

ok, some of this may be a little off

First: make sure they are in the same workgroup.

Goto My Network, then My Network Connections, and see if the 2 computers are connected, if not running the "Setup a Home or Small Office network" wizard.

    If they see each other:
Right click and hit properties, somewhere you want to enable Shared Files

    If they dont:
Run the wizard and enable file sharing

    Folder Location:
Click My Computer and there should be a folder called "Documents", thats what it is for me. Thats the shared folder for the current computer.

    To transfer:
Goto My Network Places and look for workgroup computers. Find the other computer and open it, it should show you the shared folder. Simply copy the files and they should appear in that computers "documents" folder.

Reach me on aim as MasterIntel88 or msn as Intelacer@hotmail.com and ill try to help you out.

When I connect them directly to each other, meaning disconnecting from the internet, they dont see each other. In the Network Connection Wizard, I am on the panel listed: "The wizard found disconnected network hardware". This is with the cat5 connecting the 2 computers to each other, Not to any to the internet. In the Connections box below that, it lists a Local Area Connection and names my Desktop's Nework adapter. It seems like the adapter is configured for the internet and not for a network. Is there a way to get around this? Another way for them to see each other? What do I do once I get to that panel?

To connect the two computers together, they will either need to be linked with a crossover cat5 cable, or both connected to the same router/hub. If your laptop has wireless capabilities, get a linksys wireless router with a built in switch. Connect the PC to the switch, and the switch to the modem. Then configure the wireless setup and your laptop accordingly. That way both PC and laptop will be on the same LAN, and both will have internet access via the modem.

    You need the following:

unique computer names, same Workgroup name
    no firewalls
drive, folder, printer, but something shared on both machines
Enable Netbios over TCP/IP on both machines in TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, WINS tab (absolute must, this is what allows each computer to see each other)

After you do this, you should be able to go under search --> find computer --> search for other computer name.

Thanks Annekynn, but I dont need either of them to access the internet while they are connected to each other. This is just to transfer files while im at home visiting from college.

A crossover cat5 cable? Would this be the same as a yellow cat5 cable with 2 male ends that both fit into a 10/100 network card slot? Im not sure if its crossover, but its definetly Cat5 and I use it to connect the Cat5 jack in my dorm to the network card on my laptop and the internet works just like that.

If that cord is correct, once I hook them together, how do I get them to see each other? My network card on my desktop just sees that the Local Area Connection has been unplugged.

Also, my laptop does have a wireless card, but I dont wish to spend more money to buy the router since I wont be doing this daily, but just once.

A crossover cable is a cat5 cable.  Now if you are using the same cat5 cable that you use to connect to the internet to connect your two comps, it will not work.  I dont remember the colors of the wires off hands in a cat 5 cable, but it is something like this:

    One End                 Other End
    -----------              --------------
    White                       White
    Blue                          Blue
    Blue-White              Blue-White
    Brown                       Brown
    Brown-White          Brown-White

In a crossover cable, one end is reversed like this:

    One End                 Other End
    -----------              --------------
    White                       Brown-White
    Blue                          Brown
    Blue-White                   Blue
    Brown                       Blue-White
    Brown-White               White

Hence a crossover cable.  You cannot use a nic to nic setup with a regularly wired cat5 cable.

Blow. Haha. Oh well, thats prolly the problem right there. Thanks for finnally letting me know that. Ill have to go look for one of those cables at the store, heard they were very cheap.

Btw, does ANYONE know what the hell this "1395 Connection" under Network Connections is? I disabled it and nothing happened. Its called a 1394 Net Adapter but it isnt the Local Area Connection that I use for the internet. I cant figure out what it is and Im worried it might provide a hacker/spam program access. Anyone know bout that?

IEE 1394 is FireWire connections for things like hooking up video cameras, etc.

Ahh. Would you consider, or anyone else, telling me a few things about some of the ports on my laptop? (if no, respond so or just dont reply, if yes, keep reading) I proclaim myself to be at least 'adept' with most forms of windows based computers. Meaning it doesnt blow up when I touch it, and I can kick most viriis collective encoded asses. But when it comes to all this new hardware, especially the stuff on laptops, I might as well be 5 years old again, pounding aimless on my father's *shudder* computer.(im 18 now in case you were wondering, and that computer is LONG since turned into scrap silicon....possibly recycled to a bosom near you! image)

Ok, heres the ports I dont understand: 1) socket is the size and shape of a Cat5. It is located right next to the Cat5 socket. On the panel next to it, there is a little engraved picture of a telephone with little "signals" coming from it. The cat5 socket has a picture of a network(3 monitors connected by lines) on its panel so its probably network related.

    2) This next one is a very thin socket about half as wide as a 3 1/2 inch and a little thinner. It has a button that comes out of a panel near it that ejected a little piece of plastic(im assuming its a placeholder) that is shaped in the form of the socket it was place in. No clue what this is. It has no picture of the panel, and the plastic placeholder card is about the size of a driver's licence.

    3) This next one is the smallest ive ever seen. Its about 1/3 to 1/4 the size of a USB port, almost square and inside it has plug with 4 little wires. Its engraved picture is a circle with 2 little waves coming from it and a block, these 3 are positioned around it equally spaced.

    4) The next is a very thin slot about an inch or so wide. Its engraved picture is of a card with an arrow on it that looks like its being inserted. Mabey flash? Donno really.

    5) The next one is on the very back and is just a little rectangular hole. It has an engraved link of chain on it. Im pretty sure this is for a security-cord.

    6) There is a 3rd USB port on the back of the computer(the other 2 are on its left side next to each other). Any reason for this other than they had more space to add another for the hell of it?

    7) There is, what looks like, a yellow PS2 port on the back, but the holes in it dont match normal PS2 ports. Theres a pic of a TV near it too, so I guess this is to connect another monitor to it, although ive never seen a monitor with such a connection.

    8) There is a small black(black glass like on a TV remote) piece of plastic that Im pretty sure is for an IR sensor.

Thats all, the other stuff I know what it is, or figured out when I started raping it with the various attatchments that came with it. I wish I had known before though. The horror I went through introducing the unknown 4-pin port with the adapter-cord should never be experienced by any man. image

Most likely a dial up modem jack.

Sounds like a firewire port, not too sure.

Slot for a memory card, most likely a SD card (Secure Digital)

    Yes, you are right.

    No idea.

This is like a TV out, you can buy RCA adapters (The yellow/red/whiite connectors like you get for your DVD>tv and hook it to a TV.

    8) There is a small black(black glass like on a TV remote) piece of plastic that Im pretty sure is for an IR sensor.
Yes, that is an IR port.

Thanks. By the way, what else is a PCMICA slot for? The computer already has a wireless card in it.

Also, does anyone know how to get a computer out of Standby mode? I have it set so whenever I close the Laptop's lid, it goes into standby mode. The only difference between standby and just play 'off' I can see is that there is a little light with a moon picutre near it blinking. No key works to return it to On mode, and pressing the power key just turns it back on(or off then back on, cant tell with it being mostly dead-like). ONCE I got it to boot straight to the Win Login screen after pressing the Power key, but I couldnt repeat that. Anyone know how to get this done? Itd be nice to be able to conserve its battery and heat emmissions and reboot it up very quickly.

    3. sounds like a Microphone jack. a circle with 2 waves is the mic symbol, also if there are 3 jacks next to each other this might be the soundcard that is internal to the motherboard. Most motherboards today have that and if you buy a standalone soundcard you will have duplicate. Not that it matters really but it will give you 3 jacks "leftover"

to keep it from goin into standby, go into your Control Panel, then to Power options, and in there somewhere, you can select from a dropdown menu, where it says:

When I close the lid on my computer,
    [dropdown menu]

    and select do nothing.

That will keep it from standby mode.
