Ok, first assuming that the planets we land on are round, and that we cant see through walls and canyons and what not, we should not be able to tell what is on any particular planet. So why can we see the whole planet and everything there. I think that this would be done by blackening everything you haven't been to yet.
Rather then telling you how hard that would be to accomplish I'm going to tell you what this benefits. All those complaints about colonies not being secure, gone. if this where done then the invader would not know where to go. he could not see around corners so he would be vulnerable to them. and if solar cannons were in place it would be damn near impossible to win as you would die before you found the colony. Now to fix the balance issues you could make it so that the neutrino could show you where the turrents walls and what not are.
Also i think that the nav map for space should not show every warp tunnel as we haven't been there and would not know about them all. So you could make it so it update with new info every time you explore around. (ie. you warp into a new place and you nav map updates it so that you can see where the new warp tunnels go to)
And there you go, I either solved or caused a bunch of problems.

Hi!
I think what you are saying is: how the fuck can i see all the aliens and minerals and colonies on a planet? The reason for this, I suspect, may lay in the fact that your ship doesn't just automatically pop up on the surface. It slowly descends, as the planet rotates... Thus allowing you to see the surface of the world.
That work?
Ok well you might think that we can see everything because the planet rotates but unless it spins a 10 000 miles an hour and you slowly sink down at one hundred miles an hour. you will not see every thing. also if i may state the whole place is not "blackend out" just a good portion relative to the size of the planet. (larger planet more is shown ie a ratio of 1:4 or 1:3) When we take off we simply don't see all of earth so why would it be different here.
And i just thought of something. If our ships are controled well enough so as to move around the whole of the world. then there is no reason we cant simply land next to the guys biodome and make defending a colony harder. or better yet automatically take it over without dealing with planetary defences at all.
My idea helps this problem of defending a planet if you would think for a sec.
Also i think the other guys idea of planetary scanners is a great idea but drop the price a bit like to 300 000. then again it makes sense that only the rich can afford it.

hows this for info. in one hour along the equator the planet spins at somewhere between 1000 - 1200 mph. and during take off you go ruffly 1/2 the globe but in landing (which is what we care about) we go into a total nav blackout where most scanners don't work for a period of time and when we come out we traverse about 1/6 the of the globe. Assuming we don't have some super technology in the future (like the ships that appear to go faster than light which is impossible) then we see about 1/4 the globe (1/6 plus 1/12 for scanners).
And as that other guy said its a friggin game! otherwise the creators of this game would have to add in things like time dilation, Include a radically small speed limit, and black holes (as far as i know) would kill instead of teleport, and stars would drain massively on the shields. Not to mention the anti grav bomb would have to be changed into a beam. the grav couldn't hone in on you like it does. and if i bothered i could go on for ages, so instead jus talk about how practical this would make colony defence as we all know it would.
there im finished.
