So i've been thinking the Stargate model would be pretty cool for an avatar game mainly because it seems like a proper way to make a fantasy EVE.
In the stratics chat http://www.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=27470 this one dev says there will only be 20 worlds at ship. Well shit, so this is just going to be a world like wow but instead of walking to different zones you take a stargate. He says one world is like a lava zone and one world is this. Screw that I want 200 lava worlds and 500 barrens worlds and a server population of 100,000 instead of a lame small world like WoW with a server pop of 20,000.
Basically the only reason I was looking forward to this game was because the stargate idea seems really adaptable to a massive multiplayer world. Yeah they can have atlantis somewhere but they should have a system where if you're going to get a mission of a tv show character you should do a series of things to get the deadalus to come to you or something instead of having to go to a specific zone.
Kind of seems like they shit on the idea of having stargates and instead are just using it as any other IP.
The point of this post though is that the stargate seems to be nothing but a means to travel somewhere as opposed to a means to improve massive mulitplayer game design. if you hate Eve, or hate my thinking how they should have 1000+ worlds, or think i'm crazy for thinking high pop servers, or hate my traveling mission giver idea it doesn't matter it's just me thinking about ways they could take advantage of stargates as it pertains to game design which doesn't seem to be their goal

you do realize they have to make these worlds? I can see it now, 500 worlds where there is nothing becuase they didn't have enough time.
I understand how EvE works but I"m unsure how you are going to get a massive pantheon of worlds with things to fill them. Meanginful things that is.

I'm not trying to ridicule ,but i'm asking do you understand how game worlds are made?
There is SOOO much work that goes into making a map it's not funny. How would they have the resources/money or manpower to pull off so many game zones/worlds?
I'm with you and i think many people out there wish there was a game with tons of worlds, but even if they did make thousands, they wouldn't be any good or done with any effort. It would take far too much manpower and re using the same meshes over and over.
Most present day engines should have some sort of terrain generator, however it still takes many mobs/sounds/items/meshes to make up each zone. There would be a guarantee of many repeated things just to fill these worlds in.
Cheyenne ,IMO is a rather small company trying to re create a tv show more so than trying to break ground on an MMO.I heard a few rumblings over a few ideas that won't be in the release, but i feel cheyenne is prolly forced to put out the best product they can in a certain timeframe, then try to make some money for there efforts.
Personally i would not enjoy playing any LARGE scale game unless each world/zone looked like some effort and uniqueness was put into it.
There is some HUGE asian game developers out there but ONLY square enix has my confidence in putting out a game that shows effort/size and some uniqueness.Only other devs i can think of able to pull off a huge game world would be SONY backed or BLIZZARD.From what i have seen of blizzard i wouldn't count on it and right now i don't see any SONY backed games striving for that.I think right now the gaming giants are trying to push for nicer looking games like vanguard/AOC/LOTR ,i don't see any other direction right now.Perhaps if MICROSOFT ever decided to take MMO's seriously, they deff have the studios and money to fund a LARGE scale production, but again no signs of that yet either.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
"Screw that I want 200 lava worlds and 500 barren worlds..."
hehe, this guys funny. He's either totally joking or he REALLY needs to get out in the real world once in a while. Maybe take a business class? Does he honestly think that it's economically feasible to make thousands of worlds at launch? And then hold it against the devs for not having that many? Isn't a solid, fun game more important than spending endless hours wandering through a "barren" wasteland (or 500 of them)?
I'm totally excited about 20 worlds at launch. Especially since they are all different with lots of challenges. THANK YOU devs, for not making me spending valuable time trying to travel to the next place I need to be at. Stargate IS really adaptable to a massive multiplayer world.
i've checked out the game thoroughly, it is offering nothing new to the genre, it still has avatar based point and click combat exactly the same as WoW's and WAR's, the game is being developed for fan's of the series and as a Sci-fi alternative to WoW, if you want something truly next generation, look elsewhere.
what you need to understand that although as a fan of the series i agree on what you are saying, but in terms of how long each map takes to make is why they are shipping with 20. One world depending on the size is time consuming, not based on the size, but they do have to take that map, show it to their superior, that person goes over it inch by inch with the map dev, show that dev what he/she would like changed or added or a modification in anyway, then they have to go back and follow that guideline that was just given to them. Sometimes they have to redo that entire landscape just to get it right. So based on all that hard work im happy if its 20 maps because i appreciate what they are doing to give us a game in the Stargate universe.
ARE they 20 worlds? or just 20 zones?
a world being i dunno, a continent or two. continent being similar in size to a wow continent.
a zone being incredibly smaller, and 20 "zone worlds" actually being the equivalent of a wow continent or two?
if it's 20 WORLDS, yeah, that's a lot, i don't think SWG had 20 WORLDS after all it's expansions.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I find it amusing that with no visible pictures of action of the game or of people shooting guns that he proclaimes it "exactly like WoW'. Umm, don't you think you SEE the game first???
I see it like SWG to be honest. How many world did SWG have at launch?
I cant remember, but I think if the land mass on these planets is not instanced, then we should be fine with 20 at the start,
Atlantis will add more and you are right about the SG. There is nothing stopping from adding a planet later and adding a dialing sequence for that planet. I think they have it pretty easy to be honest. They can create planet upon planet if it stays popular and it warrants it.
They have also talked about the means to inter connect other games with this platform they have. I think SGW is just the beginning of what CME will do.
bah, you're kidding yourself if you think a world will be larger than the barrens.
When I said like WoW it was a reference to a small amount of unique zones/worlds instead of an assload of zones/worlds like Eve.

Bioware now backed up with EA ...if anyone can do it its them...
It is very simple. Blizzard spent what? $50-60M on making WOW (before TBC)?
I highly doubt they have more resources making Stargate Worlds. My guess is that the total land area probably would not be very different (within a factor of 2?) than WOW when it was first released.
They can divide that into 20 equally sized worlds. Or they can have some bigger ones and some really tiny ones (areas all block off because of whatever reasons).
It really does not matter. A game size of WOW is big enough to launch as a MMO. Expecting anything a lot bigger is just delusional.
Just my .02
Yes it is possible. ! its actualy very much possible! The thing is alot of ppl grew up with the WOW worlds. And think thats the only solution.. Sadly they are wrong there have been games out way before WOW supporting WAY MORE ppl. And a game like EVE shows that with a server node system you could aswell put all players on 1 server so EVERYONE will play together.
Can anyone tell me if these worlds are largely going to be instanced? ie. you form up your group Before entering a stargate? i havnt read much about the game, so im curious how it works.
do you walk through the stargates and get ported to other large persistant worlds? or is it instanced? this is basically what im wondering.
If SGW's world are like the release worlds of SWG, then 20 worlds should be more than enough. If they are like Rage of the Wookies and Trails of Obi-Wan, then it is a rip off.
Depends really on how massive the worlds are.

It is NOT about server technology but about resources needed to hand-built the world. If you notice, EvE is pretty much empty space with some points of interests. Land-based level, OTOH, has to be build by hand. The resource requirement is very different.
SWG had 9 planets at launch and they were massive worlds. To this day SWG is still one of the biggest MMO's around (size wise).
If the 20 worlds were even half the size as SWG planets were, it would be an immense game
I'm sorry but what alternative is there to having and Avatar based point and click game. And what is wrong with the developers making game for the fan of this truely great Sci-Fi series?
Games I've Played: WoW, FFXI, SWG, CoH, EVE Online
Games I'm Waiting for: WAR, Stargate Worlds
When I said like WoW it was a reference to a small amount of unique zones/worlds instead of an assload of zones/worlds like Eve.
Eve to all intents and purposes has huge areas of nothing (with a pretty background image) which would be boring on a planet. Imagine running along a completly flat land with nothing but the occasional mob to fight (but with a pretty sky).
If one were to say "The game mechanics of Eve work differently so they are able to create a huge world. This isn't viable for a game like WoW." then I say, yes it's disappointing that Stargate has to be more like WoW then Eve as far as these game mechanics go. Now a Stargate as an Eve copy would probably suck, but a stargate that copies WoW would probably suck too*. It would be nice to have it as sandboxy as a pve game could be so you could relive certain episodes or whatever but you could do your things at times that are not linear quest lines.
*actually a stargate that copied WoW would probably be pretty cool, but no one so far is smart enough to copy the good parts of WoW like the UI customiztion. And I don't trust that their interpretation of copy would involve such things as that. The next game that lets me make 1000 line long one button mashers will get at least $50 from me, which wow nerfed so I quit.

Sandbox IP games generally are a good idea IMO. I agree with you. Stargate would make a great sandbox game. LotRO would have been better had it been sandbox. I also think they should be skill based as opposed to being class based. They also should not be level based unless level has nothing to do with your combat ability - in other words, it wouldn't add a punitive effect just because you were that level, when competing with PC/NPC's that are a different level.
so...
making an EvE system is different from making lava worlds unless each world is as bland as an EvE system.
think about the EvE systems. all they have to do to make more is copy/paste add moons, fields, space stations. most of the space stations look the same, so it is bland. Not saying EvE is bland, the PVP, market, and sandbox approach make the game.
in space it makes sense to see stars and darkness all the time, but 100 lava worlds? i would get pretty tired to see lava world after lava world EXACTLY the same over and over. plus that wouldn't make sense, because worlds are different and especially lava flowing on a world each one would be COMPLETELY different and that would involve a lot of mapping work.
Do you really want the player base spread over so many places.Next we'll hear theres no one to group with.
Ill take 20 fully done worlds over 500 copy and paste ones.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms
