I was going over the posts in the forums and I couldnt help to notice the frustration showed by many poeple regarding EU and the reason is very simple.
EU is something ELSE. It is maybe the only "game" that detaches itself from the rest of the pack to the point where it may considered not to be a game actually.
So if you come with WoW, EVE, Final Fantasy, Everquest, Anarchy, Age of Connan, etc, etc, etc...( hundreds of etcs) background you better forget all of that and reset your brain.
What this leaves you to? Two things:
1. you either can do it and then you will come to apreciate what EU has to offer
2. or you can't and then you better go back to your deep habits.
Personally I recommed you to try EU and mostely try to understand it and in the end I think you will be able to apreciate it.
For sure is not for kids, not for hardcore classic gamers and for sure not for opportunists. If you're one of them stay away. EU is THE most original "game" outhere and dispite being free to download and play doesn't mean it's cheap but this doesn't mean that has to be expensive either, the secret stays in moderation and patience.
As the stronghold for this game I would mention (the order is not relevant):
- graphics, better then most I've seen
- avatar mobility and flexibility; this is one point most of the posts misses highlighting but is by far the best in the games. You can do with your avatar almost anything to express "its feelings" from wave, say hello, dance, be angry, lauhg, agree, dissagree, be happy, be sad and the list still continues. I don't think there is other game to offer that. Not to mention about how can you change your esthetics and clothing.
- the world; fantastic! maybe WoW worlds are more spectacular but the thing that is THE BEST in EU, better then EVE even, is that the whole world is one single place for all the players. That means no different servers of maps or anything like that. EVE states (do not get me wrong, I love EVE) that is the only game to have one single univers foe everyone. Is not quite acurate as long as you have to jump from one solar system to another, which practically means seeing white screens. In EU you can go from one city to the one on the other sitde of the continent in 2 ways, teleporting, classic - seeing white screens again, OR, and this is cool, just walking/running. And walking running means just that! You can continuosely roam and explore the whole continent whithout leaving it not for a single fraction of a second, everything is smooth and contunuos. You can go anywhare you want. On the way you can admire an become familiar with the landscape like pleins, hills, mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, animals and monsters of all kinds, ruins, ships wreaks, tribs, all kind of surprises. And on the way back everything is still there like it would be in a real world. It is actually, like I said, a sigle world for everyone to see, explore, meet and enjoy and, most importantly whithout having to teleport, jump, seeing white(or black) screens in the process.
I better stop, now. There are a lot of things still to mention, like the original and absolutely free skills system which doesn't give you at all contraints of any kind (you can /buy whatever you want), the hunting, the krafting the building and most of all the community, which by no means for kids or superficial people but for thos who enjoy the EU world and are there to at least come back form time to time if not to permanently stay.
Is is easy? NO. Is it cheap? Not realy. Is it fun? YES. Is it nice? Definetely. Is it challanging? For sure. Is it underated? HUGELY. And all of these come from a player that by no means is adicted, I play once in a while when I need to relax, go partying with other characters or hunt some Athroxes, even though I end up always being killd (these are some mean dynosaur like fearcefull beasts). My level is kinda "seazoned" noob. I loved when at New Years eve I entered the game, waiting for my wife to get ready for the real party, to find a general virtual party in all cities I visited (using teleporting for speed) where avatars were wearing Santa outfits, given as preasent by EU, like hats or gloves (I got gloves) and popping out champaign quarks and spreading it al over while others were shooting fireworks and everybody was dancihg! Was really cool. In the chat you could see greetings from all over the world in all kind of languages, it was really nice. For me a very pleasent surprise.
In conclusion, don't blame what you don't understand, try EU and for sure you'll come to apreciate it. Sorry if I bored you too much.

Out of curiosity, have you ever heard of SecondLife?
Not saying EU isn't good or whatever, but SL has literally endless creation possibility. Less "game" though. Just had to point out that EU is in no way "THE most original "game" outhere". Not even in avatar 'emotability', as SL allows you to make your own emotes.
People keep saying about EUs graphics, how great they are etc. Is it just me who believes that the graphics are completely outdated? They remind me of an improved version of Anarchy Online. Furthermore, when I tried the game a couple of months ago the resolution was fixed to 1024x768 and you could not do anything to change it. How great can graphics be with such a limitation anyway?
OP, you kept dancing around the cost of the game, which is the number one complaint I've heard against EU. It has been likened to an "online casino" with reports of people spending hundreds of dollars a month to play.
No idea how true these stories are, but I just don't see anything about EU that would ever justify that sort of cost.

As an example i tried EU a brave few months back and was rather giddy at the thought of this world with a proper RL economy, but my giddyness soon dispursed after i made my toon and logged into the world...i had abolutley no gear...nothing ...no starter weapon..no armour.....nothing. So I seen one of these so called EU helpers and ask him, were do i get starter gear, he said there is no starter gear you have to go to the EU site by some EU currency and hope there some gear there that you can buy cheaply...well there wasnt i went to a vendor and checked the prices of some gear brfore i even thought about handing my RL cash out to EU , for me to have to buy a weapon and some basic armour it would have cost me a minimum of 20 dollars, the exact amount it would cost me to subscribe to a game monthly. This made no sense to me and i felt i was trying to be conned out of cash...so i quit instantly and never looked back.
as soon as you said WoW's lands were more spectacular i was put off
as soon as i heard u can convert RL money into virtual money i was put off
as soon as it clicked in my mind how much trouble this game may end up getting into i was put off
but to everyone who will play have fun. its a unique game and a welcome change to the same old crap we usually get
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Well, of course I heard about Second Life and "played" it but SL is by no means a game. I would say that is more like a 3D hosting system and it's client software more like a 3D browser for it's 3D wesites. In SL the players, called residents, can browse the world like you would on websites or could buy land and build on it something that would become their 3D website.
SL is more like a 3D development platform, an excellent one and a great ideea with big succes but its caracteristich detaches it from the games category and for this matter you cannot compare SL with other mmorpgs.
On the orher hand it is true that EU has certains similarities with SL as being more like a virtual world than a game but ther are lot of differences as well, in SL you can develop almost anything and you got the tools for that, which is not the purpos for EU.
Here is something interesting about EU from Wikipedia:
<<On 30 May 2007, it was announced that Entropia Universe had been chosen by the Beijing Municipal People's Government supported online entertainment company Cyber Recreation Development Corp. (CRD) to create a cash-based virtual economy for China, creating the largest virtual world ever. The landmark deal was negotiated for almost a year and will bring an outside virtual world into China for the first time. Entropia Universe was chosen over several other proposals, including one by Second Life.
The new project will permit up to 7 million concurrent users logged into the virtual universe, with an overall aim to attract some 150 million users from all over the world, and is expected to generate over $1 billion USD annually in commerce from this partnership. It is also estimated that the project will generate some 10,000 qualified job opportunities in China.
The technology introduced with this project will enable other companies within media, film, music and gaming industries, or other content providers, to acquire their own planet within Entropia Universe. A number of the world's largest corporations within the aforementioned business sectors are currently in negotiations to purchase their own planet within Entropia Universe. On the technical side, the server structure running the Entropia Universe will be one of the fastest on Earth.[13]>>
Good for you
Like I said EU is not for gamers with a WoW or other likewise games mindset. It is different.
However, regarding the prices of basic guns and armour it is not entirely true what you said. I still have an Opalo rifle of 3.80 PED (38 cents) and an armour of about 50PED ($5.00). The ammo for basic weapons costs in dolars range to buy (1 PED/10 cents for 100 rounds) and with this you can go on hunting and you will be able to recover some of your initial investment from loot. But DO NOT go into EU with the ideea of making money or anything like that because you'll get dissapointed. Big loot comes only from big mobs which are not for entry level gamers.
Spending bottom line will be slightly the same in EU with any other subscribing game with the difference that it is possible to get to higher figures and sometimes a lot higher, all depends of what you want and what you can afford.

Dont get me wrong im not trying to bash the game or undermine your thread in anyway, i thought it was well written and made a good arguement and just to clear things up i did go into EU hoping for the best experience but the instant call for cash put a downer on my experience, if they did give some gear to starter characters i would say EU would have much more subscribers.
I opened this thread expecting to see a debate on the European Union, how disapointed I was to find its this game.
Probably not a good idea to use abbreviations that are used by a country in topic titles. Im sure if you used "USA" people would be asking "WTF???".

There is not one single thing from Cryengine 2 in the game atm. Not even the avatars graphics is run by Cryteks engine.
Win... or lose...
I agree the title might be missleading but again this is a game forum and not a political one. If you're interested in debates about European Union go search for them on the net.
Speaking about Second Life and how it is kind of 3D hosting service and websites environment here is an article that shows how Australian Open tenis tournement built their own site in SL where anybody with a SL account, of course, can visit.
About Second Life.. the creative part of the game is really great but personally I did find the graphics so ugly I just could not go on playing after first few hours..
And also about the creative part.. one of the first things I saw ingame was a guy jumping around with a hat of the size of a rowing boat, yelling "oh, this is so cool, so cool!!"
Entropia's graphics are surely a bit outdated but they are no means ugly. Ofc its no Oblivion, but hardly none of the mmorpgs are.
not oblivion but use the same Game engine as Morrowind
I've decided to try Entropia. I am intrigued by the concept and utterly bored with everything the MMO industry has to offer. My best experiences so far have been EVE Online, Second Life and Vanguard. The latter only because of its vast world. It seems to me that Entropia somewhat combines all three. It has the real money economy just like Second Life. It is player controlled just like EVE. And it is freaking huge just like EVE/SL/VG.
I'm probably not going to invest real world money for one or two months and take my time learning the ropes. I sort of want to prove to myself that I can become somewhat established without having to resort to cash. I also want to see if this game is truly for me. When I first went to SL (only using this as a comparison because it too has a real world economy), I sort of went crazy spending money on virtual items and land only to realize, in the end, SL wasn't for me.
My gaming style is changing and while I am an addicted gamer, I need something real in my gaming experience. Second Life came the closest, but SL is not a game, it is a creative/social experience. I want to be involved in a serious gaming oriented online virtual world, not just a simple level up go raid/PvP game.
So, anyway, I'm checking it out as of last night. There's nothing like Second Life's freebie areas, but there were a couple of players offering free items in exchange for doing TP runs. I mostly ran around the surrounding areas of the starting city trying to collect Sweat. I walked around for a bit and found some fruit. I eventually found the TP and there were a lot of people just hanging around. So, feeling tired, I hung out there watching chat until I had to go to bed.
Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.
I played this game on and off for a couple of years from its very beginning, just because the pre-release description was as always intriguing, unfortunately the devs didn't offer most of the features they promised for several yrs.
Anyway, I believe I spent $50 over the course of 2 yrs, but by no means was I a pioneer/veteran player by the end. The game was very fun to play even when you didn't actually spend money between socializing and spending time on the forums, participating in special events, and trying to think of creative ways to make money. I think a couple of ppl are actually making money from the game, but they had to invest huge amounts first.
So, you don't get anything when u start out, but that is the ultimate sandbox idea for hardcore MMO'ers - not for everyone. When I was playing, there was a way to earn money without investing - collecting animal sweat, which is basically an analogy of being an illegal imigrant in US: it's dangerous, you have to work day and night and at the end you earn barely anything.
I have to agree, it is a very original game and if I was rich I would still be playing it. In fact it was one of my first MMO's and due to that I was very disappointed by most games I tried after it. Even WoW which was fun until lvl 45-50 got boring faster than this game, which kept abusing and robbing its players and they still stayed with it.
