It has been awhile since i played EQ2 but EQ2 and Vanguard are the opposite in games.

EQ2 has lots of flluff, lots of content but terrible substanace.  The core systems of EQ2 its combat mechanics and crafting mechanics are awful.  It's classes are all the same and not well developed.   Combat in EQ2 plays more like a free Asian game.  There is no depth or thought.  Pure button mashing.

Vanguard has little no to no fluff but plenty of substance.   It's combat is the best on the market.  It's crafting mechanics are  fabulous.  The  classes are well developed and deversified.  But the game has no fluff had lots of bugs and is still greatly flawed.  Even worse is that SOE has basically abandoned development of Vanguard.  They only have 12 developers left working on the game with only 1 content dev left.  In the year since SOE took over the game they have added 3 pieces of content;  1 raid dungeon;  1 lvl 12-15 quest line; and the griffon questline.  Thats all the content they have added in a full year.  They recently added some overland raid mobs but they were so bugged that they had to be pulled from the game.

Vanguard despite its flaws is a much better game.  But the problem is SOE is funding EQ2 but not funding Vanguard.

Both games share the same problems of super fast leveling and lack of challenging play.  EQ2 has much more endgame content with lots of raiding.  EQ2 also has regular expansions while its doubtful that Vanguard will ever get an expansion.  Vanguard is a better game but EQ2 has a better future.

    Excellently said.

EQ2 is exactly as the post above says be prepared to get to top level and roll a alt unless you can get into a raiding guild there is just nothing to do,  couple that with minimum of 1 expansion per year at £30 on top of your monthly sub and quite often these expansion's nowhere near justify the costs.

Vanguard again is as the above poster says,  poor launch but a fantastic game at heart it still has massive potential but is on a skeleton staff with  non exsistant budget.

Both arent a MMO to get into with less than 6 month to 3 big MMO releases in Aion, WAR, SGW.

Couple the fact Vanguard is already struggling for numbers with AOC less than a week away could spell the end for it.

If you realy want to try one and its more of a short term solution then i believe you would have more fun in vanguard if you are looking long term with raiding at end game then EQ2

Do not think they are similar. Everquest 2 is much more linear than VG. The question must be separated into 2:

"Everquest 2 or World of wwarcraft?"

    and

    "Everquest 1 or Vanguard"

    I personaly recommend Vanguard.

I am playing both currently and I think they are both excellent games compared to what else is out there now.  If you want an "easier" time exploring, then I'd say EQ2.  If you want more to explore, then Vanguard.    As far as which provides more bang for its buck, that's a tough call depending on where your interests lie.

If you like crafting, EQ2's system will be easier to get into.  But if you're up for a bit more challenge, Vanguard has an excellent crafting system.  If you're into housing, EQ2's housing is more accessible and you can afford a small place right away.  Both games offer more than just quests and slaughter.

EQ2 has a free trial to give you a small idea of what it's all about.  I'd start there and see what you think.  Vanguard's trial is coming out some time this year I believe and they also will be redoing the character models shortly.  So you may want to hold off until that's done.

Can't go wrong with either game.  Hope you find what you seek. :)

Being an active player of Vanguard I cant agree with that description a lot. Mind, I dont know EQ2, so I cannot compare to that.

    - Dev staff is AFAIK ca 25, not 12. When SOE took over, Sigil had 100 devs. While its clear that 25 isnt exactly a fine number, its a reasonable number because of the low population that Vanguard has.

    - Yep, the classes are great, definitely. Main reason why I wouldnt want to switch to any other game.

    - No idea what "fluff" means. Vanguards game world is huge and has an ambundance of quests. Mind, its still not large enough for me, but its a lot larger than, for example, Lineage 2. I'm still far, far from having made all quests in the game, in fact I havent yet seen everything of the game - and I play since release.

    - Crafting is one hefty boring grind. I still do it because I like to be able to craft stuff in the end. Maybe other crafting systems are even worse, but I would actually prefer it the way it was in Lineage 2 - you had to level a special character class (dwarf), and you had to grind for the recipes, but at least you could be outside adventuring and didnt had to stand in front of a crafting station for hours and hours, repeating one and the same game again and again.

    - That raid dungeon is huge and very challenging; each boss mob has different tactics and if you dont adapt to them, you will wipe. I think its very wellmade.

    - The overland mobs havent been removed; I have killed some of them already multiple times.
