Will we get a Wii MMO?

Much as I love my PC MMOs I do enjoy the physical activity involved in Wii games.

How long do we have to wait until a control method like the Wii nunchuck or balance board make it into our MMOs? Imagine a game wtith two nunchuck for the sword and shield (or dual weild) and a balance board  for dodging or running.

You could even cast spells by making different hand gestures. That way it would actually be more difficult to cast some spells and even more so if you're running. Imagine controlling your mount with virtual reigns or  having a really careful movement required for sneak or pick pocket.

Even better, we can all get fit. If you spend all day running around the towns and battling mobs it would be like running a marathon.

I'd really love a MMO to be built with Wii-style controllers essential for the game. Is this something the rest of you guys would be interested in too?

I think it would be fun, actually.  At least it would be something new and different from the standard keyboard and mouse MMO, if nothing else.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more

I think we will see a Wii MMO eventually. The MMO market is just appetizing not  to try and tap into that kind of cash flow.

I don't see the point of having the balance board included, unless there is some sort of hoverboard transportation thing in the game in which case I'd be thrilled at the concept.  Still, simply using different gestures with the Wii-mote, along with assorted button presses, to do different attacks, could be fairly interesting.

Let's say, for instance, you're a magician-type character.  You have yourself a little magic wand, which you could cast spells with by targeting something (point at it and press the B button) and then gesture with your wii-mote in a certain way to do a certain attack.  The more complex the motion, the more powerful the attack.  So a quick jabbing motion would shoot a little spark of lightning, while a few swirls over your head would conjure up some meteors or something.

Movement would be done with the control stick on the nunchuck, with the buttons atop the nunchuck being used to block incoming attacks and to center the camera behind your character (in the event that you don't particularly like where the camera is currently pointed.)  The camera would be aimed toward whatever you're targeting in the event that you're targetting something.

Furthermore, pressing the plus button would grant you access to your assorted menus, giving you a chance to check your inventory, edit your skills and the inputs needed to use them, equip new weaponry and armor, and check your missions among other things.

Long story short, the Wii controller, while not as complex as the mouse and keyboard, could easily be a functional and enjoyable set-up for an MMORPG.  ...but of course, there's still the business of getting Nintendo behind the idea...

Tecknic - that's all very creative but do you have to sit down, lay the nun chuk and remote on the floor, pick up a keyboard and lay it in your lap every single time you want to say something?

A Wii MMO would definitely be something different and fun I think. The only problem I see is from a technical stand point. Is the Wii capable of MMO capacity, or would it be just a multiplayer game, much like smash brothers, or GTA4 on ps3. I just don't know ... although I have not done any research at all on the specs of the wii, how traffic to servers would be handled, etc. It may be entirely possible, I guess one would have to do some research first.

Hmm ... in response, maybe you could just take out typing all together, and just have voice chat? Maybe that way it could lead to more role playing or something. Although, it would get very annoying... not to mention what if someone couldn't talk? I suppose this wouldn't work very well. I am sure they could come up something though.

You could never run a major MMO on the Wii, it just doesnt have the capacity to do it. Any MMO on a console usually needs a hardrive, like the one you had to get to run FF online on the PS2. The XBOX360 and PS3 have them of course. The only decent online thing that ive seen that comes close to a MMO is Monster Hunter, but its not going to be "massive" I'd like to see how that plays on the Wii

Very unlikely in my opinion. It would be a big risk for any developer, and wii developers seem least likely of all to take risks. Console gamers on the whole aren't going to be willing to pay monthly fees also.

Wii barley has an online>.<, and I doubt the Wii could handle enough people for it to be called an mmo

They could port World of warcraft to it.  The great thing is the game wouldn't need to tone down the graphics at all.  About the only thing that would need to be changed would be the method of communication would need to be Voice only.  ( and of course porting the controls to the Wii mote +nunchuk)

it would sell incredibly well as I assume the average owner is a female or older person with not a huge knowledge of games which is a market which mmos would flourish in.

However nintendo seem a bit anti

And before anyone says that the Wii could never run WoW.  Let me remind you of the minimum specs to run WoW:

Minimum System Requirements Windows® System 2000/XP OS: * Intel Pentium® III 800 ... MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz * 512 MB or more of RAM * 32 MB 3D graphics card

The wii's processor is clocked around 730Mhz and the GPU is clocked around 400Mhz.  So the hardware is actually capable.  Since you wouldn't have any OS hogging up resources in the background.

Games consoles do actually have operating systems.  However you just don't notice them quite so much as you do on PCs since they don't have such a prominent GUI aspect.  But they still do things like manage memory and peripherals.

But yes it does have less background tasks running than windows for example.

It's more interesting to me if MMO players would welcome the shift in play style to Wii-esque controllers rather than whether or not the game was actually on a WIi. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who would like to see this innovation (No disrespect to those who wouldn't).

Still, I'd be glad if Nintendo did produce an MMO on the Wii (or some successor). I personally feel that Nintendo have reminded everyone that good gameplay and a bit of inventiveness is actually more important than just processor speed. I'm delighted that Nintendo are once again a major force in the console gaming market, as well as with their DS.

Someone mentioned typing while playing. I've never liked the fact that people can actually have lengthy text chat during in-game combat; to me that means the game is just too un-demanding. Perhaps normal motion etc. could be done without a controller (or just one); then when you grap the nunchucks your avatar does the same on the screen in readiness for battle. That to me would be just perfect.

Most games that involve some form of exercise are typically some sort of sport.

7 commandments that all video games should follow. #1 says it best.

The DS has sold 60 million units the Wii is second with over 20 million shown. I like how it uses the pictures to compare graphic power then to show how many have sold. A mmo can be done. I dont get why companies still dont want to devople for the Wii. If they havent noticed yet there is alot more money with casual gamers then hardcore gamers as there is a much bigger market yet it seems as if only nintendo has noticed this.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
