Why do they call prostitution the world's oldest profession?

ZindaihasZindaihas Member UncommonPosts: 3,662

Because clearly humans were farmers well before they were prostitutes.  And some might argue that they were hunters even earlier, which is true, however, I wouldn't exactly consider that a profession, it was more a necessesity in order to survive.

Is it because prostitution is a more titillating (no pun intended) subject and obviously makes the news a lot more than agriculture?  It may be the world's second oldest profession and because of our interest and/or abhorrence of the matter, has managed to steal the title.  But oldest...no.

    Quite simple really....

Eve was a prostitute, she sold her body to Adam for an apple.  Doesn't get older than that.

  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613

Adam had the job of spreading the reaches of pardise further, worshipping god, and whatever else  :P

edit: before there was Eve, or even lilith if she exists in your religion.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

because the belief behind that saying is this.

Finding a mate for ones own benefit is the most ancient of traditions, men pick beautiful women who are physically attractive and more likely to bear children. Women pick men who are more likely to be able to provide and live long enough to raise a family.

Both sides are trying ot sell themselves, and their bodies for something.

Would it make you sleep better at night if they said it was one of the oldest professions ? Farming isn't really that old, I'm sure women have been selling their bodies longer than that since I'm sure figuring out what men wanted was much easier when they weren't wearing any pants.

It sort of makes sense if you look at it like this:

Hunting and farming were sustenance lifestyles for a long time, prostitution was the first profession that aimed to do more than survive.

erm what? I don't think women think one day hmm I wouldn't mind a gold necklace I might aswell go bang some random dude and lose all my dignity for the money they receive. It's a last resort.

well very technically speaking we were at first hunter and gatherers then we moved on to realise we dont need to move from place to place we can just settle down and farm in one area, and even then i dont think it was considered a profession because it was done to survive.  So if a woman wanted food from a buffalo a man killed she would have to give him sex therefore making her a prostitue because she does not love him she just wants something and has to give something in return in this case sex.  Yes you may argue that there are other `things` she could give in return but this is before we had developed brains and invented jewelry so if it felt good the man would give her what she wanted.

    Professions. Not trade.

Professions means you get paid for your work.  Farmers and hunters did their trade to survive and the others they shared in a communal type of living.  You cannot barter a farmer with another farmer. Or a hunter with another hunter.

Prostitution was bartered without prostitution but with money and other forms of trade.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to envision some prehistoric woman offering herself to a male because he has food and she's hungry. To be honest, the first woman that did that was a genius.

Well even before there were humans there was prostitution, its callled mating.  Females of different species mate with males for protection of the male and for offspring.  All sex is in a way selling yourself for something else, may not be money, as it usually happens under a barter system.

Another reason why I think it is silly to outlaw prostitution.  A woman has sex with a man for status, kids, a relationship that is ok, but money, oh nos that is bad and is ruining our society.  Every sexual human is a prositute in some way.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

So if a woman has sex outside of marraige and the guy happens to pay her money or buy her something nice...she looses her dignity?    Then I have no dignity I guess.

Depends on what U define. Maybe before human being know how to earn for a living, only thing they are professional is having sex...

  • Women have been selling their charms since forever...it is, without a doubt, the oldest profession; predating organized farming by tens of thousands of years!

There is a good reason why prostitution is outlawed.

9 out of 10 women (the average woman) does not have about 3 dozen different men they sleep with in any given week. Prostitution just isnt about sex for money. The first form of Prostitution (all the way up to 10 CE (give or take a hundred years) was not done for money. It was done in exchange for favors from different dieties.
The sheer form and expression of Prostitution isn't sex for money like it is now. Its about commiting to a gain (whether monetary, power, or social status) through sexual intercourse. A Prostitute's normal day is sex with about a half a dozen different men.  The last time I checked, the average woman's pursuit for monetary, power or social status isnt by opening their legs for multiple different partners. So I have to disagree with you that prostitution is the same as a woman having sex with her husband but just with money.
Every sexual human is a prositute in some way.
If you think of it as humanity being greedy bastards at the expense of other people's wallet or emotions then I say I agree. If you think of it as the wife being a prostitute because she has sex for her husband's or her partners satisfaction, then I disagree with you

So your problem is actually with promiscuity. And why is that wrong again? In an age when we have access to contraception and EXTREMELY effective STD prevention measures?

And don't give me that bullshit about condoms not working. The CDC did several studies that rated your chances of getting HIV from a positive partner while wearing a condom to be 1 in 500. With a low risk partner and a condom the odds jump to 1 in 500,000,000. Plus the state of Nevada, which regulates prostitution with regular testing and requires the use of condoms in all brothels, has had exactly ZERO cases of STDs in prostitutes.

So explain to me again why it's "wrong."

Lol, I have a feeling if STDs were fully cured there still will be prostitution. It has nothing to do with diseases nor promiscuity. Its the mental state that sleeping with dozens of people a week will cause on one party or the other. Human beings are not designed (nor animals) to sleep with as many different people as possible for financial or status gratification. Has nothing to do with STDs.

And don't give me that bullshit about condoms not working. The CDC did several studies that rated your chances of getting HIV from a positive partner while wearing a condom to be 1 in 500.

Ok...if you want to go that route (in which i wasn't even remotely going) let's go there. In Medical terms 1 in 500 is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE odds. HORRIBLE. The odds of a 60 year old man dying from a Bypass Surgery is 1 in 12,500.  The odds of someone dying of brain surgery is 1 in 10,500.  1 in 500 is utterly horrible odds.  You have a better chance of catching aids in a condom than winning 500 bucks off of a lottery scratch off ticket. Yeah. Condoms work my ass lol.

Would be a perfect world if you knew the person (or whore) you were screwing was STD or HIV free wont it lol.

Date a girl, man. Treat her right. Fall in love with her. Sex is a much better thing with someone you love versus someone you never met and will cost you 500 bucks.

Or you can do your thing. Shell out some cash and pay someone to do it with ya because you feel that you cant do it for free.

Im assuming the point she's getting at is a guy buying her dinner or something, or casual sex on dates.

Me i oddly still believe in an odd form of abstinence.

All animals, humans included, are wired to spread our DNA as much as possible. A female rat has sex twenty two times PER DAY! Ever see a pack of stray dogs around a female in heat? Yes, human society has spent considerable energy trying to curb our natural orgiastic tendencies but only because we wouldn't get anything done if we spent all day fucking like a tribe of bonobo chimps.

And don't give me that bullshit about condoms not working. The CDC did several studies that rated your chances of getting HIV from a positive partner while wearing a condom to be 1 in 500.

Have you even slept with 500 people? Have you had sex with one person more than 500 times? Since the average person only has sex about once a month, I'm willing to bet no. Yes, a prostitute will have sex several times in a day, but that will mostly be with people of average or lower than average sexual activity.

With a low risk partner and a condom the odds jump to 1 in 500,000,000. Plus the state of Nevada, which regulates prostitution with regular testing and requires the use of condoms in all brothels, has had exactly ZERO cases of STDs in prostitutes.

That's exactly what they do in Nevada and Western European countries where prostitution is legal. No one that is infected can work in a state licensed brothel. On top of that, those state licensed brothels require that clients wear a condom, so the odds of infection are even lower.

Well, the thing is that your last post didn't make that clear. If it had, I wouldn't be asking for clarification. You seem to be implying that prostitution is wrong due to a deontological  imperative. However, I don't see where marriage is any less objectifying. A legal institution whereby one person has exclusive sexual rights to another is pretty damn objectifying if you ask me.

And yes, I'll admit that sex is better with someone you care about. I'm married after all. But I'm not going to say that marriage is for everyone. Some people are ugly. Some people lack the social graces to charm a blow-up doll. In short, if you're attractive then everyone wants to fuck you, otherwise you're just fucked.

As for the dig about not doing it for free... Do you ever have sex for free? Don't you take a woman out? Don't you do things for her? Don't you buy her nice things? I've been with my wife for ten years now and sex is basically a transaction. In the beginning, if we both wanted it then we had to spend money traveling to each other and buy condoms. Now, it's very rare for us both to be in the mood at the same time. If she wants it, then it becomes a demand that I'm just supposed to submit too. If I want it, I have to be romantic or do some arbitrary chore around the house. Sex in marriage is no better, and often times worse than sex in casual relationships or even one night stands.

BTW, I apologize for the rainbow nature of this post. I just don't like leaving the audience out in the dark about the conversation. Scrolling up is just as annoying most of the time.

Agriculture is not all that old, 6 or 7 thousand years maybe.

A lot of professions came before, hunter springs to mind.

The notion of marrying "for love" is a modern institution by large, invented when we were given the choice.

Mating before that has always been governed by neccessity ( sp? ).

It was always about what one part could pring to the other in terms of needs, and feelings were rarely, if ever, included.

That is why man and women alike are hookers to a degree.

And to be honest, who can claim this has changed much to this day?

My point of view is that anyone who goes to a job they hate is just as much of a prostitute as a hooker selling their body with equal, or even less, discomfort.

Just because it is sex does not make it bad, that is the religious nutjobs talking.

You know what the real problem is?  To many people have sexual hang-ups, insecurities, religious teachings getting in the way...whatever...the fact is...sex is just a natural thing....it is part of being "alive" - its part of nature.

If a guy/gal wants to pay for sex...who am I to deny him/her that right.   You know what I find funny.  The very people who are constantly harping about gays, lesbians, sex, and prostitution and such are either gay/lesbian or have used prostitutes themselves.   I mean look at the governor of NY as a prime example of what I am talking about.   They get into office by supposedly combating such things as prostitution and say, "See...see what I did for you...I arrested these vial things and put them in jail...I shut down their operation - I ...I did this for you.'   Then he walks out of the press conference and calls the local escort service.

    Caveman hunts pig.

    Caveman kills pig.

Cavewoman sits beside him with a pretty smile and says "can I have a piece?"

They eat. They sleep together that night.

    Prostituion is born.

Don't think just because you're married you're not paying for it. In the end its just prostitution in bulk order packaged with childcare and maid service.
