black screen bug still in released game client

ethionethion Member UncommonPosts: 2,888

Well I'm setup and installed for the early release.  Loaded the game and did the patching and figured what the heck I'd click play and see what it does.  Well it loads and I get a black screen....  I'm sure hoping this is gonna be fixed as this is a really sucky first impression upon installing the game...

I just installed a new copy of vista sp1 64bit ultimate in preparation for AoC.  I installed the latest beta nvidia drivers I think it was 175.70.  I also installed directx 9.  I have both EQ2 and Vanguard running flawlessly.  So I'm thinking my system is working properly...

But AoC is still doing the blank screen.  If I run it in a window it works but given that that isn't the default and that many people will install it and expect it to work I think thats a big issue.

Does anyone have an nvidia driver that works properly with the 8800gtx?

Not sure personally as I didn't get this bug, but many guildies have and they all said to lower the resolution to start the game and then adjust it.  Hopefully they find a fix for this before the 17th!

This is one of those issues that kind of slipped under the radar at first, Hopefully they do fix it though.

P.S. Maybe im just an idiot, but why did you install DX9 on vista?

I thought DX10 was not going to be available for launch...least that's what i thought anyways. Probably why he was forced to install DX9.

and be wary of 64 bit OS's, there are some driver issues currently presently for both Vista and XP

Yeah I understand the whole dx10 might not being enabled.. But.. what i'm saying is, why would you download direct x 9?  Vista comes with DirectX 10.  Direct X 10 comes with compatibility with all past direct X versions, including 9.

Edit: to be clear, the whole why dx9 was directed at other poster, not you. :)

cause there could be an older version depending on when the CD was stamped of DX9. I have windows XP cd from about 3 years ago, and i needed to update my DX drivers, which in turned just reinstalled the newer version of DX9c

This fixed that during the beta.

    1. Open the SimpleConfig.exe

    2. uncheck fullscreen

    3. click ok

    4. restart game

DirectX SDK takes the place of DirectX 9 in Vista.  You have to update it just as you do normally with DirectX 9 in XP.

Apparently you need to install directx 9 to run some directx 9 games.  eq2 ran without it but vanguard was looking for a dx9 dll file.  Did some research on the net and apparently many dx9 games require some dlls that only get installed with dx9...  So makes no sense to me but it works fine.

I know how to work around the problem ok I did it in OB.  But for release I'd think this would be a major issue.  I mean consider the normal non geek who buys the game installed it and upon running it is presented with music and a black screen....  I'd think a pretty good percentage might just take the game back.
