22nd AUGUST 2004   I will no longer see day light...

DARK and LIGHT has prevented me from straying from my basement room. Because of it I will no longer see day light and i'll be white and pasty for life! FOR LIFE!!!!! All right, got that out of my head, so go on to my thoughts on the game!

Well, most likely you'll hear remarks from people who never tried the game, so I'll shoot some of them down for you.

It's just land, no content...
As said by many testers, totally not true.
The developpers gave us a huge test area to start with, and this is only a fraction of the total landmass. I've been testing for 6 months now, and I still find new forts, abandoned camps and so forth. There are many small towns aswell as a Huge city for us to enjoy. The flora and fauna is outstanding, There is many different microecosystems in the test area alone. We have Himilayan like mountains, wastelands, rolling hills, deserts, tundra, plateaus, valleys and wide delta's. Not to mention the archipelago they opened for us.

This brings another question to mind, how can they mesh these together so that they dont clash at the borders?
Well I'll tell you they pulled it off! the terrain I can see reminds me of how British columbia is. There’s the snow topped mointains that slowly transfer to the temperate zoned Forests around it, and they slowly turn into a hotter more dry climate as you move away from the coast in the summer and eventually leading to desert. Its all about gradual change so it doesn't overwhelm you.

How can players encounter others in such a vast terrain?
Well I’ll be honest with you, the space for testers is too big for the amount of testers there are. Soon this will change with the new testers. You must remember though, just like with many other mmorpgs, there are always places where people like to go, whether for trade, convenience or hunting, they will always be popular. Well during travelling in remote areas, just like real life you wont cross many people, but say if your walking the roads from town to town, theres always people here. Just like how the ski resort in game always has people there or how the cemetary will be filled with people toying with skeletons.

The game can't possibly have enough mobs in the world for people to encounter in remote areas!
Well for this arguement, I'll give these people something. In Hostile terrains such as glaciers, there tend to be way fewer mobs to encounter, they are still there and i still run into them. In the more temperate areas though, there’s such a wide variety of creatures and theres many of them! Creatures stick to regions, but they will venture from them now and then. Like a wolf wandering out of the forest to wander the grass hills surrounding it for a while, or a sandworm seeing their natural prey and attacking from a distance, even leaving the sand to get its prey. I assure you people, theres going to be enough mobs for us all to find.

The mobs will always be the same wherever you go...
This is another false statement, in the one area alone, they still have select regions for animals, they font spawn at set points, and they tend to stick to their environment. This is the first release of mobs in the test and theres already a better variety then in other mmorpgs. You got your typical Skeletons, Golems, Dragons and such, but here you also have natural wildlife as we do in the real world. They dont tend to attack you, some are even friendly and will run up to you prancing with joy. If the devs put this variety in one kingdom alone, and they haven't even implemented the full amount of mobs, then I have full faith in them on this issue.

So those are the typical questions I hear, I'll finish off this with a wrap up on a few other features I love of the game.

First is the interface, for a beta phase, they did their homework already. Its easy to use, very visually appealing and you can undock and even filter some of the windows.

Second would be the faction system they implemented. This is in the first implementation but i still love it. I watch at a distance as two mobs will face off and attack one another to the death!

Third and final, the items. These are beautiful, the developers created some real eye candy when making these pieces. They fit the character flawlessy, aswell as make it actually reflect the light that hits it. It adds immensly to the the immersion of this wonderful game.

well I have to say, I am looking forward to DnL.
As for anybody who is wondering, BC (British Columbia) is an amazing place if you ever get to see it, We have the hottest play in Canada, freezing winters, I live in a dessert but its a 20 min drive to snowcapped mountains, 2 hours till there is a rainforest.

That aside, I like the review there, and it got me pumped again.

Now, if you have a good computer, and you don't get in, then consider yourself unlucky. I heard they are choosing 5000 beta testers next wave.

Sounds like a world I'd definately would want to be a part of, but I'll be moving around quite abit very shortly so I won't be able to apply for the beta...  image

Also, is there any way to change my info for the beta test? When I first signed up I had an Nvidia 5600 FX.. but recently I got a 9800 pro, and just realized I never changed my info(though I might have lied anyway, not sure heh).

No way to change at the moment. But it's supposed to be at "Beta profile" at the left bar at the darkandlight.net website.

Btw, Open beta starts around October, so don't worry if you don't get in.

Actually i notice from mine and other folks experience getting into  better seems to be easier with mainstream specs.

DAoC beta 2 i got in with a computer specs just a bit above the minimum specs.Eve online with specs considered about mainstream then.

Ever since i been building my systems with high end stuff- nada.Always have to wait for open beta or win my slot.

Instrestingly enough folks i have met online that do get into beta seems to be doing it with more mainstream specs- ie FX5200 ,Ti4200 and such.

But it makes sense.I mean they KNOW their game would run smoothly on R9800pro and above so really those with high specs are only useful for testing bugs.

For how performance will be for mainstream cards(which is also main market) they need those with such cards as FX5200 and such.So taking such ppl is killing 2 birds with one stone.

so for the guy with the R9800pro who wants to change his specs from the FX5600 i say leave it!

You have a better chance with that bro.

Actually, I think they need both the low-end cards and high-end cards, and not much of the middle.

It's a shame that my computer is junk, that's what happens when you're poor.
