Why no quality World War 2 MMORPG?

CatizoneCatizone Member Posts: 233

There are tons of FPS games on WWII but why no MMORPG?

WW2 online is one but it's really old. A new one with todays generation graphics I think would do really good. There could be a German side and allied side.

Controllable planes and ground vehicles on a MASSIVE world map with all the major citys and towns in WW2 battles. Capture and hold type deal.

Make it happen!

zig heil!

As much as I'd like to see a decent mmofps, I'd rather it not be WW2. as you said theres tons of games on that already, its overdone and just boring now. last one I bought was medal of honor on ps2.

I'd still love it if they did this idea, but I'd rather it not be in WW2.

Is there not a WW2 Online?

I never played it, as I recall the reviewes of it were best described as 'Meh'

Yeah, there is a WWII online and it is an alright game I suppose.  I think the largest reason why there aren't other mmo's based on wwii is because if there is a genre that's been over utilized for gaming in general, apart from fantasy, it would have to be wwii lol.  On top of that for a world wide audience it could be problematic.  For example I think it is outright illegal in germany to show anything with a swastika.  I do not think Japan would take kindly to 14 year olds nuking hiroshima over and over again.  And wasn't it WWII where the germans rolled into poland with tanks and the polish army tried to repel them from horseback?

It wouldbe far too easy to insult too many people's sensibilities with a AAA WWII mmorpg.

Because those that want to fight online in a WWII setting are playing COD or the BF games.  You really can't get much better than that.  A persistent world to fight in isn't neccesary for the majority.

MMOFPS needs to be developed more, but I was happy in terms of regular FPS's that COD4 went modern, and apparently COD5 will be in another new setting. As others have said, WW2 has been overused.

A new MMOFPS set in WW2 would be awesome. But I think that it's overdone. There are way too many WW2 games out there. I would prefer either a modern day MMOFPS or a Vietnam war MMOFPS. Now that I think about it, a Vietnam MMOFPS would be hot.

ww2online is some kind of mmorpg not just an fps, there are people who are commanders and controll  whole armies (the players)..so far i heard they are working on a new engine. the problem is with planes, tanks and stuff you need to support a more or less realistic environment and the view of sight is the most important thing here exept you dont want ww2 but a fantasy military game. that is also the problem to get decent graphics, since even the latest high end machines would get on their knees with long distance visibility + high end graphics and massive players, that would be unplayable...the technology did not that much advance so far... but iam curious how will look the next new ww2online generation engine, iam sure there will be better graphics with it. if it comes to realism, ww2onlien is probably the best and only ww2 mmorpg out there + its a war simulation what other games like bf2 or any shoebox ww2 games cant offer.

but you are right i like the concept of ww2online and also from planetside, i wished there would be more really great pvp mmorpg´s out there....just think about starwars - real starwars not just roleplaying =) would be awesome.

watch some of the videos here and you will understand (seems they are made with a special dev/buzzard cam)

I thought about this and my first reaction was "how are you going to use WWII in a persistent world?" .   But   you COULD actually take  a game like WoW  and substitute the Axis powers for the Horde, and the Allies for the... well for the Alliance.   Instead of random mobs and such you could substitute wandering patrols of enemy NPC's.   Instances could be based on named battles etc.    Missions substituted for quests.   Definitely could be class based.     Instead of leveling you could get promoted.   Career paths could mirror real military career paths (pilot, engineer, special forces ect).

    So sure...why not?

A sci fi / future mmofps would make alot more sense. Like alot of people say we don't need more ww2 games. A sci game would probally solve alot of problems mmos have without killing the 'immersion'.

A mmofps where you could hope into a missle in a spaceship, fly at the speed of light onto the battlefield. Run on foot for a bit, take over some territory, find a plane, fly up into space and go to a different planet.

I think that there are no ww2 mmo's for the most part because the ethics would be wrong for people to roleplay a nazi, and it could easily draw a bad crowd on that end. So many people would complain i would think if there were people roleplaying nazis spewing racial slurs at people.

    playing eq2 and two worlds

Boognish got a point. A WW1, Korea or Vietnam game would be easier to get away with, it is still a lot of stigmas about WW2. Personally i would prefer a 'nam game to WW2 anyways

I posted the following in the Planetside forum, but it's appropriate here too.  I've always wanted to see a good WWII mmorpg as well.

    ----------

I always loved to see a remake of this game.  I actually thought a game with this style in the Call of Duty world (the original one) would be terrific.  Imagine Call of Duty graphics and effects on a Planetside scale?!?!

Something in the WWII era where your "levels" would be "ranks".  You would advance by going from Private, Corporal, Sergeant, etc.. with the various degrees inbetween.  You could probably get 80 "levels" of advancement out of this structure, and at the same time, levels wouldn't matter all that much on the battlefield in how "strong" you are, just how many options you had at your disposal.  For instance, a Private could kill a Major just as easy on the battlefield as the reverse, it's just the the Major would have access to different things (more vehicles, different weapons, etc.).

I know there is WWII Online, but I played that all of 10 minutes, and we need something with better graphics than a Commodore64.

That's complete nonsense because there is a WW2 MMO which allows you to play as, not Nazis but as German soldiers, which during WW2 most of them were. I haven't had one person spew a racial slur at me or anyone else.

Just to elaborate a bit, most German soldiers were not nazis. They were regular Germans and a lot did not share the idiology. They faught for their country and their leader, not for the ideals. Just like a lot of Soviet soldiers during WW2 were not communist but were just fighting for their motherland.

I want a crysis/battlefield style mmo. with perisistant "RvR" battlegrounds and objects / things to capture. ranks, money for equipment etc. all the pros from mmo's and and all the perks and adrenaline of FPS combat.

I'm disapointed by the first person shooting in age of conan. its a start, but its not quite enough.
