One think I like about how Mythic is developing this game: a) big amount of closed beta testers. b) not just 6 mobths or 12 months before lunch but almost since the begining of the project. c) they listen feedback. You can't make everyone happy but at least listen them all and decide what you will do based on users' feedback. This is kinda new for the MMO industry and I think it will help to the success of the game.
For the most part, every game company listens to thier community. It's moreso how they use the information given, which lately has been against the community's. But to the guy who posted above, that could go for every mmo, and isn't something that is new to the MMO industry. And you could have a million beta testers and still have a crappy game. As stated it's how they use the information and how it's implemented into the game. And I dont know really what to say about your B answer but the game was in development for quite sometime before they allowed people in beta. And at this moment, there beta is super restrictive to certain computer specs. I don't even remember them stating that they have started guild beta yet, so they are far from being done. Either way hopefully everything works for them and not against them, because if this game flops, alot of people will be disappointed. Taking an AoC comment here, HEADS WILL ROLL!
And I think Mythic does this well. They take the information and they can implement it well, while still making it what they envisioned in the first place. I'm not a super vet expert or anything, but with DAoC, I think the only real mistake they made was Trials of Atlantis. Also CC and stealth being a bit over-the-top but overall they're good at balancing classes. The only itching fear in the back of my mind is EA...I've heard bad things about them and MMOs, so I hope Mythic really gets to control the reigns here. I'm pretty sure they are anyways, so I expect the game to take suggestions from the players and end up as something real nice.

I'm just waiting to hear a few months down the line 'NEW IN GAME ITEM SHOP! Now you can buy you're favorite trophies to decorate your character! Just $9.99 a piece! Hooray micropayments! Heh...now if you get the trophies from the Keebler elves then maybe... nvm... it would still make me a sad clown. My concern with EA would be constant add ons that have nothing to do with WH lore, but I also understand that EA has new management since they destroyed UO. So I can only hope that the new guys learned from the old guys mistakes.

My honest opinion is that WAR and AoC will both be two of the top in the mmo genre, going head to head, with wow being the obvious big boy.
BUT, unless Wotlk gets pushed back(which i hope it does for WAR, but i hope it doesn't for myself) then i can honestly see WAR not really selling all that much.
The more info wotlk pushes out about it, such as 10/25 raid sizes, DK's filling their own tanking roll. Flying/mounted combat. As well as gorgeous areas(i'm sorry if anyone disagrees, but i feel style>quality and wotlk's areas scream style)... As well as the devs "apparantly" learning from their mistakes with tbc(which did improve the game vastly to begin with)
ANY game coming out alongside wotlk is in for a beating, and well... I really hope WAR succeeds since i really want to play it.
Mark Jacobs hangs out at my site quite a bit, and someone asked him about the rating in the shoutbox. I can't remember his exact words, but the Mark revealed that the T-rating had a lot to do with GW's wishes.

Actually I'm not surprised. Likely the decision came down from somewhere in marketing in GW in that they don't want to lock the game into an older crowd because they want to get the younger generation into warhammer with the hope that they'll make the hop to the tabletop game or other franchises they own.

For example if it doesnt have really good initial phase but rather will pick up players as word of mouth spreads (like Eve) then they could just pull the plug since they are notorious for not taking the long view on planning.
Otoh I think micropayment will only happen over Mark Jacobs dead body. He is probably the loudest advocate against it among lead developers in the world.

Now I am not trying to bash WoW (not in this thread at least) but there is a huge set of former WoW players (still counted as subscribers - don't be fooled) who see right through this so-called style and polish as just regurgitated hamster wheel gameplay with a few gimmicky things thrown in for fun.. ie. siege and aerial combat. I am not at all pumped up about 10/25 duplicate instances.
That said -
WAR is going to attract almost any veteran MMO player with roots in PVP.. at least to try the game for a few months. Yes - there were MMO's before warcraft.
WAR is going to attract anyone who loves WoW, but finds the PVP lame and discouraging.
WAR is going to attract many WoW players who heard about it in general chat - some flame war about WoW 1.5 = WAR. Word spreads quickly, and even WoW players do not live in a glass bubble.
WAR will most likely release beginning of oct 2008, pending some serious issues (didn't stop funcom). WoTLK will be out most likely Jan 2009, given blizzards track record.
The only reason we have seen so much press from blizzard this week is to steal some thunder for AOC. yes - blizzard has become the MMO microsoft/adobe etc.. makes me sad.
WAR will not have the same intense graphic requirements at AOC. Despite all the gameplay mechanic flame wars, this is the NUMBER ONE thing that will limit AOC subscribers, as compared to WAR. (Seriously debating a full upgrade on my own 2.5 year old computer just to play it.)
Expansions do not equal a new game, at most they pump people up for 2-6 months. A game pushing 4 years is showing its age.. whether you only have 2 exp packs or 10.
Hell - I might even get WoTLK, but a year from now... unless it is a total bust, WAR will be my game.

We should want every MMO that releases to prosper and do well so that more companies (and hence more money) gets put in the industry to fund and develop more games in the future. I understand that people don't like how some games implement features, but to be honest I do not see variety as a bad thing. Cheers!

Yeah, but a bad MMO deserves to die. Propping up a bad mmo simply because you want to "support the industry" is like putting an MMO on welfare. As WoW's enormous success and all the mmo failures have proven: Taking your time to release the game so that it's the best quality possible is the right approach. I think AoC has bitten off way more than they can chew with all their promises. This will end up biting them in the ass in the end.

and... as more games are released, the average quality of all MMOs grows, pushing the companys to be even more creative, to make a game that sweaps you down, and you surrender to its godliness .... i for one thinks, that WAR will set the standard when it comes to RVR/PVP in all games, and all the upcomming releases will steal the idea, and try to improve it ( they might even set new standards again for rvr/pvp) Perhaps, in 20 years or more we will all have the perfect mmo, and everyone will be happy, trolls will die, and there will finally be peace in the world.... ehmm.... yeah, guess you get my point

Agree 100%. Aside from other aspects of AOC, the requirements alone will keep sub numbers down. AOC will do just fine though. Warhammer on the other hand is set up to become the number 2 game if they deliver. If they dont drop the ball they are easily in the 2 spot a year after release.

It doesn't matter how polished WoTLK is the fact is its only an expansion so its market is fairly limited current wow suscribers who have a level 70 (or near 70) character. As a former WoW player I have to say that an all new experience has much more of a draw for me than simply new things tacked on to what is already a very familiar game. The fact that there are no new races and the new class will only be accessable to established players I doubt that the new expansion will have the the same draw as BC (which i admit was well done but hardly perfect). WoTLK seems to be more about drawing back old players then it is about getting new ones and for me at least this isn't going to work. I'm ready to move on and I'm hoping WAR is what I'm looking for.
WAR is going to be EPIC! Yep, an epic rip-off of WoW... I'll take blood, guts, and actual combat over a WoW rip-off and more elves... No thanks.
Its truely amazing how the WAR and AoC forums get the most intelligent and well informed posts on this site. I mean my goodness you must be truely closely involved with the developement and testing of this game to come to such an absolute and well thought out conclusion.

Testing it as well and i can assure you it s not a WOW clone. As far as it being EPIC yes it will be. no limits on people in open rvr= epic. The fact you don t know whats coming and how many makes it have that huge feel. It without getting into a NDA break is FUN, and thats all that really matters.
I'm sure Aion has the potential to do something better than WAR, but it certainly won't be RvR, and that's the main attraction for many of us anticipating WAR, and that's why we're going to be playing this instead of Aion. It's up to the individual to determine which game is "best" for him/her.

Expansions do not equal a new game, at most they pump people up for 2-6 months. A game pushing 4 years is showing its age.. whether you only have 2 exp packs or 10.
Hell - I might even get WoTLK, but a year from now... unless it is a total bust, WAR will be my game.
Games I've Played: WoW, FFXI, SWG, CoH, EVE Online
Games I'm Waiting for: WAR, Stargate Worlds

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
DX10 Boobs huh, where can i pick up this game lol.
WAR is going to be EPIC!
Yep, an epic rip-off of WoW... I'll take blood, guts, and actual combat over a WoW rip-off and more elves...
No thanks.
Tecmo Bowl.

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
You'd have to be truly mad or uninformed to think WAR is any more or less a WoW ripoff than Age of Conan.
STOP WHINING!
Testing it as well and i can assure you it s not a WOW clone. As far as it being EPIC yes it will be. no limits on people in open rvr= epic. The fact you don t know whats coming and how many makes it have that huge feel. It without getting into a NDA break is FUN, and thats all that really matters.
Still Aion will be better
Wont say it will be better but i do want to try it
I'm sure Aion has the potential to do something better than WAR, but it certainly won't be RvR, and that's the main attraction for many of us anticipating WAR, and that's why we're going to be playing this instead of Aion. It's up to the individual to determine which game is "best" for him/her.
