well at least we know now what happened, guess marvel must have pulled the plug on their license and this with what we are left with. I think CoV/CoH is better :P especially with all of the new stuff slated for development.
OP: Marvel Online has nothing whatsoever to do with Champions Online."Formally known as Marvel Online" sounds like the project was renamed/remade into Champions Online, there is no basis for such a conclusion.
Originally posted by WhiteScion Marvel Universe was planned for xbox 360. But since its Champions-Online is this scheduled still for the 360?
Champions Online is scheduled for release on the xbox 360.
OP: Marvel Online has nothing whatsoever to do with Champions Online."Formally known as Marvel Online" sounds like the project was renamed/remade into Champions Online, there is no basis for such a conclusion.
Other than the fact that Champions Online is being made by the same company and will use the same game engine slated for Marvel Universe Online on the PC and Xbox 360. Oh, and that shortly after MUO was canceled, Cryptic purchased the Champions IP and announced Champions Online for PC and the Xbox 360.
No. There's no basis to conclude that when MUO was canceled, Cryptic switched MUO's resources and assets to Champions Online.
Cryptic focusing resources to Champions Online is obvious, but still there is no official information (well I can't find it).
The work done specifically for the Marvel Universe project (artwork, story, textures, specific engine modifications) cannot be used, thats the problem with all jobs involving programming. If they (Cryptic) simply renamed/reskinned the work done into "Champions Online", Marvel would sue them into oblivion. (Now there could be a paragraph in the contract that lets Cryptic Studios simply re-name/re-skin the work done for Marvel Universe, but I doubt it since Marvel is hardcore about protecting their trademark & intellectual property).
Although I guess general engine optimizations etc can be used since the engine is owned by Cryptic Studios before the contract/assignment, but it is still not Marvel Universe remade into Champions Online.

Champions Online is being made by the same company : agreed.
will use same engine slated for MUO : source please ?
Shortly after MUO was cancelled, Cryptic purchased the Campions IP and announced CO : where is it said they hadn't bought it long before ?
And yes, I too guess CO came as sort of a replacement for MUO, but your grounds for this are mostly murky assumptions lacking real backup to me. Though I'll gladly accept any correction to my PoV.
Marvel Online is now Champions online and was formally known as Marvel Online. I'm right.
Do you have any sources to support this. I'm just curious, would like to read it myself.
Dear god, Oversoul, do you realize who you're talking to ? It's trev9999 ! He can't possibly be wrong ! Right as we speak, reality must be adjusting to conform to his views.

For answers to your questions, I'd suggest reading the Champions Online website and the developer posts on the game's official forums. It's all there.
You might also try the Hero Games forums for more background about the purchase of the IP. Posts by company owner Steve Long are fairly candid about the sale.
Finally, the latest issue of Game Informer magazine has quite a lot of information about Champions Online and some info about the cancellation of Marvel Universe Online.
This thread reminds me of the Southpark episode where the two guys who the kids employ to build the time machine argue over the number of shows produced for the original Star Trek.
It is cool to see that this IP will be produced into an MMO. I personally enjoyed many nights of RP in the Champions universe.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
yay, another pointless post wasting space in the universe. Good job with that. Who cares what it was, what it could have been, etc.. It is what it is, get over it.
I agree with Pixeldogmeat. I just a new superhero MMO that offers more than COX.
""But Coyote, you could learn! You only prefer keyboard and mouse because that's all you've ever known!" from the timing, and other items, one would would assume the op is correct. but, i think a more accurate title for marvel online (as done by cryptic) or champions online would be COx part deux.
what happened to the skills system that COx was working on, supposedly at the same time they were working on inventions? don't see where it ever made it's way to COx, but champions online is talking about it.
the biggest fear everyone should have is that emmert is, once again, running the show.
issue 5, nothing new for villains since their inception (content-wise, unless you count a couple of new contacts in the starting zone, but no new zones whatsoever), and "a player should equal 3 minions in power" --- these are the legacy of statesman.
emmert leaves and we get issues 9-12. new 35-50 content for villains, only co-op, but it's still something new to see, red-side. finally get epic red ATs. inventions are added and then expanded upon. lots of stuff that emmert either said was on indefinite hold/wouldn't happen (inventions), or things that emmert just sorta ignored (new red side content).
so don't go thinking this will have pvp or villains you can play. also don't get your hopes up that you're going to be more powerful than 3 minions. these are not the ways of statesman.
but it really isn't an argument to geek out about. OBVIOUSLY, anything with "marvel" on it, or that marvel paid for, won't be used. OBVIOUSLY. that's not being argued, or if it is, it shouldn't be.
marvel was going to be cross platform, champions online will be cross platform.
seems that as soon as the marvel thing was announced to not be happening, the champs online thing was announced TO be happening. does someone really need to draw a map on this one? again, don't geek out about something that's a non-issue. what you should concern yourselves with is what, exactly, will statesman do in this game? from his being at the helm of COx, we've seen that HIS vision is all that matters. period. players be damned.
again, don't expect a lot at release. it'll probably take a good year after release (if the game survives and doesn't become part of the station pass) to see what the game really is about.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

I guess you miss the point that a little perk of being a game designer is that you put your vision out there, not someone else's. MMO gamers really need to get a grip on that.

i'm pretty sure mmo gamers have gotten a grip on it, with their wallets. but it's ok for fanboys to flock to whatever dev they want, there are NOT enough fanboys to go around and support any single MMO out there, much less multiple ones.
believe me, gamers, more and more, are understanding that to be heard, they simply have to speak with their wallet.
devs need to adjust their vision to what the paying public would like. when your only choices were uo and eq, it was a different world; now, you have many many many choices, with more coming every year.

COH has way too much planned for a COH2 to really be taken seriously. Also, doesn't have the player base to split . then you take into account that Cryptic had been working on Marvel online for a considerable amount of time and COH was still a pretty young game as well for a sequal to be a real consideration.
As for the skill system, Jack said a few years ago that it had been finished, but the end result wasn't acceptable and they were atarting from scratch. I imagine your right in the fact that the skill sytem then got focused on marvel, when Crptic later began working on it, and then now will be part of CO.

Yes even with the release of COH the game had been all but completed the only thing that Emmert rerally did to get the game out was introsuce the class/AT system....yippy. Emmert has no buisness being a lead designer, he believes the story is far more important then the experience.

Yes but his vision sucked, wasn't fun and ran off 100k users. Developers really need to start getting a grip on not aleinating the core player base they do have.
Okay, well to the OP, Marvel and Champions are entirely two different fictional worlds.
After selling CoX and its development team to NcSoft, and deciding to go a path thats didn't end with a Marvel MMo, I believe Statesman offered the idea of a Champions mmo, this is when I believe they sought to buy the license and did. Champions will be the first game Cryptic will produce and publish independently . It will be cross-platform atm and will use the Cryptic 2.0 engine. The graphics look very comic book esq, perhaps a little too much, but there are too little screen shots for a good judgment to be made.
This can hardly be called CoX 2 or and it will suck that it will be compared to its predecessor. Sue cryptic for having a superhero fetish. They promise(hopefully they wont break it) a deeper character customization system and combat will be a bit more intuititive than click and wait for cool down.

i was a little worried when the MO was cancelled but Cryptic are pretty good at their job and i feel this MMO will make it.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
