Not so funcom

I was really excited about AoC and all my friends and I were going to play (we're kind of semi-hardcore).

I pre-ordered and got a card with a pre-order key. I REALLY wanted to get into early access!

But when I entered the key I saw that the early access was SOLD OUT.

Below is the FULL TEXT ON THE CARD... I got no other info (except from the store I pre-ordered the game from and they said I'd get to play early access).

ALL TEXT ON MY CARD:

---------------------------------------

UMIQUE AGE OF CONAN PRE-ORDER KEY

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (the key)

Go to http://register.ageofconan.com and register with the key above. This pre-order key will give you access to the in-game items the War Mammoth mount and the inventory belt, as well as the option to purchase 3-day early access code

The early access offer is a downloadable version that costs 5 Euro and includes 10-days of game time that stacks with the 30 days of the retail product. The early access offer is exclusively avaiable to pre-order customers. The in-game items will notbe active in early access befiore your account is upgraded with the retail key. Once you have your retail key, login to the address above and enter your key. Early eccess sale and download starts on the 16th of May.

--------------------------------------------------

"as well as the option to purchase 3-day early access code"

That's it! There is NO information about any limited number of accounts. No talk about that I should get more info on the AoC site or anything.

I have of course contacted the so called support but it was meaningless (they just repeated some pointless mantra: "Unfortunatley at this time we sold out...").

AND...
For some days the ones who did pre-order and entered the key but didn't get Early Access cannot even access the AoC forums! Hahaha... yeah just silence us! I bet it's nice and quiet in the forums now? No complaints!! Great.

(Needless to say I will never play any Funcom games).

Yeah, it's fixed. It's of no consolation, but you weren't the only one to get messed over by this. This issue has been on a few blogs (and I believe the old AOC forum had  a Dev post on it). Essentially, Funcom screwed up. They underestimated the demand for the early access and so people who pre-ordered and didn't immediately create their accounts (and pay the fee) got screwed. This apparently only happened in the US (I don't think EU folks ran into this issue, but I'm not sure).

Having said that, well...it's just 3 days. Basically, you're pre-order money got you the in-game item. You haven't been charged any money for the early access.

Could Funcom have handled this better? Absolutely. Is it the end of the world though? Nope.

I'm in the same boat you are with one of the accounts I bought, so I won't be playing in the early access either. Don't get me wrong, I'd be rabid if I paid that 5 bucks and still couldn't get in...but I didn't, so it's all good. I do fully intend to play on the 20th tho. Peace.

Well normally I'm a normal guy who don't get upset about much but when I got screwed over this bad... they told me things that was simply NOT TRUE, I get really angry. Most of the cards I've seen have THE fine print but the one I got don't have THE fine print.

PS I got my card in Sweden when I pre-ordered from an EB Games store here.

Heh, well the "fine print" I think he/she was referring to still wouldn't have helped much, it reads (on the Best Buy pre-order),

"Go to http://register.ageofconan.com and enter your key. You may begin downloading the game client software and installing as early as May 14. Then you may create a character and begin playing on May 17, 3 days before commercial release on May 20, 2008. Your character and all his/her progress will be preserved into the commercial release. This key also unlocks your in-game item. Note: There is a nominal fee of $5 that covers the cost of the download and includes 10 days of additional game time. Some restrictions apply, see registration for details."

I think that's the fine print he/she means. Basically, that print is a legal "catch all" you see it on everything to cover their asses for cases when stuff like this happens, lol. Gotta love corporations.

Perhaps it doesn't bother me as much because I have yet to play an early access/1st day/whatever for any MMO that wasn't borked in some way. So as far as "borkings" go this one isn't all that bad.

As a customer of  FunCom's for over 5 yrs (Anarchy Online). I can say I am not the least bit surprised by their shoddy, sloppy, and uncommunicative handling of  Age of Conan's recent Betas, Accounts issues, Forum problems and now the Early Access.

I am one of the "huge number" (direct quote from an uncharacteristicaly candid e-mail from FC Support) customers who paid for the early access from FunCom's account page and had to suffer with a poor excuse for a "torrent" that could not deliver the client on time for todays event.   While I have received 2 Support e-mails, neither answered direct question of a refund for the Early Access fee.  And my most recent e-mail now informs me that may account is now frozen due to cancellation ( I canceled nothing ... and of course when I follow the provided link to my account it does not show as canceled and, go figure)

Any vet from Anarchy Online can tell you that broken systems and no official comments about severe issues is FCs standard Modus Operandi. Interestingly enough much of AO's systems and attitude toward customer service drastically improved when the development team left to focus on Age of Conan, and a new staff was left to run Anarchy's day-to-day.

Anarchy Online was always a small game with little subscriber money to keep things running tip-top,  Age of Conan is a game that went 'Gold' in pre-sales. I can't seem to find it in me to make any more excuses for how FC choses to treat their customers.

If a Company won't support it players, Players should not support the Game.

Ok first off, the fact that you care so much about a 3 day " head start" shows that you only play games for the " OMG FIRST" syndrome that plagues so many "gamers". You seriously telling me that you can't wait 3 days? is it that horrible?. They stated earlier that early start keys were on a first come first serve basis and had a deadline.

The horrible thing is that Funcom, through the pre-order card, made a promise ("...the option to purchase 3-day early access.") to me and broke that promise. I actually paid money to get the right to purchase early access.

If you look at the text again at my card you also see that "Early access sale... ...starts on the 16th of May". I've had no other information at hand.

Since Funcom decided to do an Early Release means they decided to capitalize on the people who want to be there first and they botched up the job by not being clear and then try and blame retailers and users for their incompetance.    Personally I am waiting to see how release goes before deciding if I will play, but as time goes on, Funcom is looking like they are out of their league,  they have a major release here and don't have the infrastructure necessary to pull it off cleanly.

    " OMG FIRST" syndrome?

Are you retarded?  Dude, these "gamers" you so un-neccessarily put in a bad light, are people who have SPENT MONEY on getting there first.

When you pay for something, you are signing a contract beetween you and the seller. Funcom this time being the seller, has broken the contract and is right to be blamed.

Ignore openedge. I have the same card and there is no mention of limited quantities. Sucks, yeah, but only 2 more days so oh well. Life is like that sometimes.

You should by happy you didn't get first. Funcom has been releasing massive amounts of patches to increase stability of the game and bugs. You will have a less buggy/laggy version when you login on the 20th.

The game is released the 23rd in Europe so if, for some strange reason, I would want to play the game anyway I'd have to wait until then.
I hope Warhammer online is good.
