Do all other gaming companies have to tremble at the presence of FunCrom's evolution in gameplay? Do you think this type gameplay is going to be a cornerstone of future games coming out?
If they do not adapt, do you think other companies games have a chance of survival?
One other thing, we all know the gameplay isn't perfect. IMO, it is definately a step in the right direction. Anyway, I just wanted people's general ideas on what they thought the future may hold and if this really would put pressure on the other companies to step it up a notch?

I sure hope not, the combat in conan is a friggen stupid gimmik, it's not revolutionary, it's boring. In fact the only fun thing about the game are the fatalities and they get old when you see the same fatality over and over again.
It's a new game, and people have been waiting for something for so long, everyone thinks conan is the answer, until 1 month from now when everyone is level 80 and realize there is nothing to do at the top.
I don't know if i would consider swinging a weapon in real time a evolution in gameplay, but its definitly something new for mmos. I toyed with the game a week ago in beta and i just couldn't get used to the combat style i like relaxing a bit more and just hitting the buttons and watch my guy cast rather than being on my toes all the time and mashing buttons. I'm sure some people might like it, but its not something i look for in a mmo.
I'm not denying that end game could be weak. I can say this though, of the games that have been released in awhile, at least it feels better in the begining than the others did.
I will give you the benefit of the doubt, but I smell a little troll in your posting....
Is this what you mean? You like time to be more social and the combat system inhibits that or do you just find it awkward?
the combat is much much much better in AoC compared to what's currently available... or do you prefer interaction of right clicking and waiting until something dies with maybe a couple button presses here and there?
The graphics are exceptional with performance to boot.
Conan is the answer and will be for some time.
Conan in one word... Hallelujah.
Cheers!

I played it...There are no combo's if I remember right. Isn't this correct?
Active blocking is only partial, it just adjusts your percent to block and not neccessarily guarantees a block. To tell you the truth, I really don't know if that is how AoC works or not either. Sometimes I believe it was real blocking and other times i thought it might have some dice rolls in there.
DDO's beginning is what screwed it up, it just never recovered. I did like the game ok when I gave it a free run later. To me, something was still missing though. Actually I did like the multi-classing, even though you need to know what the hell you are doing to even attempt it.

There are no combos like AoC, but there are abilities that if chained together have some neat affects (like trip followed by a powerful attack, charge then trip, etc... well until trip got beat down with a nerf bat, but ya get my drift), and yes active blocking is in DDO (ie a tank can block a doorway and take very little damage as long as they hold their shield up). Yea DDO screwed up early on with lack of content and too much required repitition of the instances. Its a good game for a dedicated group or guild, but it became very monotonous for me in the end, but the combat system was always pretty neat.AoC's combat system does do a very good job for the setting (imo). The fatalities are pretty fun (as long as you dont get caught in slow mo with a couple of the poor sods pals wailing on you), and I do like how they did the shield swapping for defense. I just hope there is some room left on a server come Tuesday!

I couldn't agree more. I haven't played this game at all but i was really dissapointed when i read this part of the game. I guess im just too much of a traditionalist when it comes to MMOs. Don't like to be spoon fed stuff either. They say they are bring the kind of combat you see in FPS to an MMO but if i wanted to play and FPS game or a hack and slash game with combos that's what i would play. With mmos i like sit back relax and enjoy myself.
Oh and a question for people that have played this game. With the real time combat style how does that effect communication threw typing? If i have to manually do every action will i still have time to let my group know what's going on or will they be able to let me know what's going on?
I think MMO combat will be revitalised when designers figure out how to have more reactionary tactics in play. For instance, Active Parries and Dodges - mostly, these features are left up to numerical chance, if they are even implemented at all.
Conan is helping to get there, in that you actually have to hit the target for it to even have a chance to register - but it's still not there yet. Yeah, DDO does this too... but it's murphed up in so many other places.... who cares really?

This is what I wondered if the problem was, the typing and interacting part.I disagree with you saying the whole FPS thing. The reason is because there is no MMO based on that type combat, from a melee standpoint(DDO is somewhat, I do give it credit for that). PS was a FPS based MMO, but that is really a different genre of MMO than AoC.
What I don't understand is why since we already have all these MMO's out there to cater to what you guys are wanting why are you wanting this one to be the same or why are you not happy? Is it because you are just wanting something new? That is completely understandable, but maybe this type of MMO is just not for you.
With answers like you guys are giving makes me feel like there will be MMO's that don't have to use this style of combat as a cornerstone. I was really just wondering the viability of MMO's keeping it with the basic auto-attack setup with specials when games such as AoC stepped it up in that dept.
I guess I'm just not looking for what you guys are anymore and that is why I'm glad there is a departure from the regular fantasy MMO formula when it comes to this part of it. I guess I'm just wanting more options out there with similar combat and that is why this whole discussion interested me.
AoC combo system is nice but doesn't set any standard, easily with g15 and so on those combos will be breeze. Also most combos will be hard to pull off in pvp IMO where it will be more of exectuing as much burst dmg as possible.
If you have ever played Rakion, I wish they would have done it like that. I don't know how you would have gotten all the moves/abilities implemented. I guess you could have had a couple of different combos that used certain key combinations, but it would be based on a hotbar or some stance you had selected. Say you would have more than one combo that would share the same kind of key combination. For defensive stance it would pull off a different move though than an offensive stance that used the same key combination. You could switch between these stances very quickly though, so it would be easy for you to get between the combo types.
I have no idea if you will understand what I'm talking about, but that is the best way I could put it.
The combat is interesting. I never got past level 13, so I'm not sure how it scales in difficulty later on. Still, it's something new.
The load screens are not a step forward though. MMO's should have no load screens, but I understand the necessity of it given the current level of technology. Still, there are open world games out right now and I prefer that design from an immersion perspective. I like it when everyone is in the same zone though, not instanced zones. That sucks. I like to see lot of people.

I understand what your saying but personally i feel that would needlessly complicate things, especially having to memorize what each button combo is... i don't play fighting games for a reason =P
Do you realize there are MANY non MMO / Online games out there these days that have load screens? I just dont see the logic in thinking MMOs should not have any at all, concidering from a game perspective, they have more information and things going on at once more so than any other "offline" games to date. Thats just my take on it, and this is coming from someone who is in school for game design.
A lot of people take for granted how much work goes into developing / maintaning a game of this calibur, and dont see it for the "art" that it is. Now, I'm not bashing your viewpoint on this, I'm just saying theres a lot more involved than people tend to realize.

What do you mean Non MMO have load screens, reasons games have load screens is facilitate copying the map to your memory. Making it seamless and avoiding load screens is the trend these days in console as well PC games but not always the case, Wow gets around it by copying portions of the map in the background that are in view as necessary .
Edit: wish aoc forums where still up lots of threads on it..
Of all places, I still cant understand why people come to these forums and expect genuine replies from knowledgeable posters.
OP, play the game and judge for yourself, the naysayers and douchebags on this forum are of a degree unlike any other, it is not the place to go for realistic, non-biased opinions that might reflect upon your decision to play or not.
I don`t care if people knock this game on the first day.I have not played yet ,but what i have seen an heard This game will be awsome !!!!!

I wonder what your agenda is? You cant be one who plays the game with those words.
I have never seen so much slander done against a mmo before, being in the beta and seing all the lies spread hurt because you could not answer back.

I don't have an agenda, it's just my opinion about the game. If you think my slander is bad, then apparently you have never even heard of the game star wars galaxies lol.
