Anyone know how to fix this Vista issue with AoC?

For some reason when I start the game up, I get an error message that says I do not have Vista Service Pack 1 installed. Now, I have Windows Update on automatically and I manually check it every so often and it says I have every update...

So, is anyone else having this problem? If not... can anyone tell me how to find out if I have service pack 1 installed or not? I've tried a lot of the settings on my computer and can't find somewhere that says "Vista 32bit Service Pack 1" or something simailar.

EDIT: Error message: "You are running Windows Vista without Service Pack 1."

Right click my computer and select properties.  you will see windows vista (what ever version you have), copyright M$ and then the next line will say service pack 1.   If you do not see this, then just do a google search and download it.

I had the same issue, I went to the update site and updated everything, and it told me I still didnt have it. Checked again and It offered me a new update that had not been there before.

DL'd it, installed and now the warning is gone.  I wish I had more specific information as far as what happened but just wanted to let you know your not alone and it has been fixed for me.

One word of warning, when you do get offered the update, and you go to install it, grab a nap or do some dishes. I felt like it took forever. It will reboot, install 1 of 3, 2 of 3 etc etc.

On Vista to see what OS you have installed and running on your system, click the start menu and right click Computer then click properties.  Or go to your control panel and click system which will bring up the same window.  In that window it should tell you what Windows edition you have installed and running.  If you have service pack 1, then it will list it there.

    Good luck,

It is not a automatic update because Microsoft does not feel it is ready for relase yet, It will become a auto update once it is ready.  Unfortunatly they either failed to notify game developers, or were ignored when they advised the game developers, as there are a few games that all give this message to play with optimal performance.  EQ2 wants it, LOTR wants it, PoTBS wants it and, obviosuly AoC, probablly others as well. You can manueal d.l. it on MS d.l center tho.

All you have to do is go to Microsoft's website and find the download for Vista SP1. I had the same issue.

Very interesting. Thank you very much for all your replies.

I was under the impression that it already had been released, but I guess I was confusing that with Service Pack 3 which I just installed on my XP machine.

So, does anyone know if it's worth it to install Service Pack 1 now? I tried to get it from the official Microsoft site, but all it told me to do was use Windows Update. Should I install it for better performance, or will it be minimal at best?

    Thanks again everyone.

I have had SP1 installed for vista since day one. I have noticed a few improvements hear and there but nothing major. You should be fine with installing it, but make sure if you have old software/hardware that it will still run after an upgrade.

    Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been released, it's out there, however;

Due to some driver compatibility issues there are a number of reasons why your windows update will not "see" service pack 1 update but here is the stand alone download

    HERE

    "CAUSE

    loadTOCNode(1, 'cause');

This problem occurs because of one or more of the following causes.

    Cause 1

You are already running Windows Vista SP1.

    Cause 2

You use the third-party program vLite to configure the system, and you may have removed required system components that must be available for Windows Vista SP1 to be installed. For more information, visit the following vLite Web site:

    Cause 3

Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool is used to block the delivery of Windows Vista SP1 from Automatic Updates or from Windows Update.

    Cause 4

You tried to install Windows Vista SP1, and the installation failed with a known inconsistency in the file or registry structure.

    Cause 5

A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated to Windows Vista SP1.

The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed.

    Cause 6

You have installed a prerelease version of Windows Vista SP1, and you must uninstall the prerelease version, or start with a new installation of Windows Vista.

    Cause 7

You see one or more updates for Windows Vista when you run Windows Update. However, you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed."

Also of note is the news that Microsoft have removed SP1 from the Windows Automatic Update feature because of the issues,

"Gone searching for a service pack for either Windows Vista or Windows XP? If you've looked for either on Windows Update in the last few days you'll have come up empty handed, as Microsoft has pulled the service packs from distribution due to incompatibility problems with Microsoft's retail management software." more HERE

I know people who have just had their WAU find and install SP1, so judge for yourself.

EDIT : P.S - I couldn't despite updating everything and checking and cleaning out all sorts obtain SP1 through WAU, so I bit the bullet and used the stand alone install.
