Anyone playing EA on a Pentium 4 rig?

ZtwoDZtwoD Member Posts: 37

Save the ' your computer sucks' posts please you guys that have got dual core systems. This thread isn't about that. Yup i will be upgrading later on in the year so don't need that advice yet. Just can't do it now.

Running a P4 3.0 630 HT ( o/c to 3.5 )

2gm pc3200 ram

AGP ATI HD3850 512mb

Played open beta but found that I had a lot of lag/hitching/stalling even after the 'miracle' patch at the lowest possible settings - average 8-15 fps in the player cities - sometimes 20 @ 1024x768.

Did get upto 40 fps 1680@1050 in the starter area at times.

So I'm just wondering if there are other players out there playing EA with an old rig and how's the performance? Did you play Open Beta and if so, has the perofrmance for you increased?

I'm getting more ram at the start of next week just to get this comp upto 3gb, but failing buying a complete dual core system there's not too much more I think i can do with this PC now.

This game has a lot of resemblance to Vanguard at release.  I suggest you wait a few months to see if they can improve the client performance.  At present, about 3/4 of the computers out there won't run this game acceptably.

I don't mind the fact that 3/4 of comps out there won't run it . In a few months time I'll have a dual core system in place anyway so it will all be good.

Just curious if guys with low spec rigs are getting a half decent stable framerate, even on low settings and resolution. I can live with that for the moment

My PC is about as good as yours. But I'm not in EA. But I'm getting the game anyway, even if the game would play in 8-15 fps in cities. As long as fps would be 15+ in the wild or in PvP i'm happy.

Did you ever get to play in the open world? How was your fps there?

The performance has improved a lot since open beta. Though I can only speak for myself and what my friends have been experiencing, I went from 30-35 fps in open beta, to around 50-60 now (same area).

Then again, this is on a higher end computer. But I assume your performance will have improved as well :)

    Thanks for the replies.

I did hold back on ordering the retail game until just now ( I'm in Europe so 5 days won't kill me ) so that's on the way

Good to hear that the performance has increased from the open beta - fingers crossed that's across the board and fingers crossed not just the high end rigs.

Yep i was in open beta and I spent most of the time just trying to get a stable framerate even on low settings 1024x768 with shaders 2 ( which looked a bit crap to be charitable on a 22in widescreen monitor ).

It was worse in the player cities - framerates would jump from 20 down to 7 or 8 then upto 15. If I stood still then it improved a bit, if I panned around it died again. Odd thing was that the framerates weren't that different going between low/medium settings and upping the screen resolution.

But I did hit nearly 40 fps on 1680x1050 res on the beach intro at times, and it was well, lovely looking even without all the bells and whistles on and was very smooth to play.

I took some screenshots at the end of open beta with everything maxxed and the fps was like 6

I'm just hoping that with the patches and optomisation that it will gain me 15+ fps and I'll be a happy cookie.

The important fact to look at when playing this game is do you intend to pvp a lot.  If you want to pvp, then you are wasting your time if you don't have a high end rig.  The guy with the fast computer will literally own you.

If you are doing stricly pve you can put up with non optimal performance.

I wouldnt put too much stock into what oz is saying, hes been doom and glooming in a lot of threads. As i posted in another thread, my room mate is running a pentium 4 3g  with 2 gigs of RAM and an older 8600 gts and is having no problems on medium medium high settings. now im not saying that everyones computer should have no problems as everyone is different but this launch so far is NOTHING like Vanguards launch. i played vanguard at launch and my entire guild had problems with it, no exceptions.

    Pentium 4 3.0

    4gb of DDR2 RAM

GeForce 8800 GT 512mb video card

Intermittant hitching, which went away after an hour.  fps at about 30-40 in the city...Higher outside.

Had a chance to play on my friend's set he and his gf play on...two dual core 2.5, 4gb ram, Geforce 8600 512mb...and the only difference I could tell was faster loading times, meaning 3-5 seconds rather than 5-10.

I played in the pvp event with this setup and saw no appreciable problem then, and considering how many people were piled onto White Sands Isle last night, I see little problem partaking in large scale pvp with my rig.

    Hope this helps

    Not well unfortunately.

    (1) Go Model card, lowest end cards nVidia produces.

    (2) 2gb of ram isn't going to be enough running Vista, as Vista itself almost uses a huge chunk of that physical memory, and AoC also tends to use nearly 2gb by itself.

    (3) Not sure about the T2250 Proc, not familiar with that model.

    I've got a P4 rig.

No problems. The latest patchs really made the game run smoother and faster.

No problems running PvE. No problems running PvP. No high end computer jocky owned me. The player can adapt to any circumstance. If they are any good.

Game is fun. Very pretty. Early access is fun.

    See you in game!

Thankyou for the replies those of you that are running down the lower end of the scale and/or offered your thoughts.

I'm still gonna stick more ram in mine and take it upto 3 gb, and wait patiently with fingers crossed ( well sort of ) till the 23rd when I can join you guys

I was running a pentium 4 during beta. The performance wasn't very good, but many people say the beta client was an older version and had poorer performance for everybody compared to what they'll be seeing with the retail version. I don't know, but I had my settings bottomed out and it was still pretty laggy. I was running a p4 3.6ghz with 2gb ram and a 6800gt with 256mb ram at the time.

My computer was in need of an upgrade, and what better time to upgrade it than coinciding with the release of my most anticipated pc game in years? I spent roughly $600 on a budget gaming setup and replaced the guts of my computer to a intel core 2 duo e8400 (3ghz 6mb L2) with 2gb ddr2 800 on a p35 gigabyte mobo. I'm now using an 8800gts 512mb (g92 core) video card as well.

The difference between my new and old rigs is amazing. I couldn't play the newer games like assassin's creed and bioshock. Now I can run them silky smooth on max settings. That's what I anticipate being able to do with AoC as well. No need to spend even close to a grand to get a very competent system to run the newer games. If your PC is a few years old (mine was over 3 years old) then it's probably time to upgrade anyway. If you get what I listed above, you'll get the absolute best performance:dollar ratio and will be running AoC with ease.

P4 rigs will be running with totally minimum graphics settings and likely still be getting fairly choppy performance. Your video card may be better than my old 6800gt, but the CPU is still going to be a nasty bottleneck, and even the gef 7000 series are pretty outdated nowadays.
