Stay Away from WinXP SP3

Whatever you do, do not install this upgrade. I had to reformat my computer because of it. I lost Right mouse click functionaility, Web Pages were hanging while loading, overall system performance was lower, and I was getting a stuttering effect while performing computing tasks.

This is another bold move by microsoft to further bury WinXP and make you upgrade to Vista. Their have been numerous complaints across the web. Although some users are reporting performance gains.

I guess it depends on your system configuration, but if your computer has been running fine I wouldn't chance it. At least create a system restore point before trying it out if anything(of course I wasn't smart enough to do that lol)

It has driver issues with AMD CPUs, especially with premades like an HP.  Its mainly caused when an OEM installs windows on a Machine off an image, and imprints the Intel drivers.  When SP3 reads through and replaces a few of the .dll it believes you are running an intel machine.

I installed SP3 on my home-built no problem.  It actually runs a bit faster.  However, if you install SP3 remember to back everything up even if its home-built or Intelbased since there may be a problem, better to be on the safe side.

Well that would be the culprit as I am running on a AMD Opteron 165(o/c 2.6ghz)

I'm running an Opteron 180 homebuild and it is running okay since SP3.  The only issue I have seen so far is with .zip files hanging when I use windows unzip instead of WinZip.

Sorry to hear and thx for informing us, tho I dont think its purpose to advertise Vista, heh. The negative standing a bad SP creates far outweights the possible drift towards Vista. Also, SP1 just had big issues likewise, so its not really surprising.

I recently got hit with a virus and it was easier to reformat and reinstall than to fix. I installed sp3 with all the other updates and am getting some odd bugs. Has anyone been experiencing slower overall internet speed? I've been dealing with it since the install and have been trying to track down the problem. Didnt even occur to me that it could be sp3.

    I have it...

I used to have Shitsta, so I erm.. "Obtained" XP SP3. It runs fine for me, at least, it's a hell of alot better than Vista is.

I also have no problems with SP3. Don't assume your individual problems are widespread.

Been running with SP3 since RC1. No problems at all, so I'm sorry to hear about yours but SP3 is a fine patch as far as I'm concerned..

Microsoft Corp. has warned users updating to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won’t be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to the older IE6 without uninstalling the service pack.

The warning first appeared in a post Monday to a company blog written by the Internet Explorer development team. Microsoft released Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update as an optional download Tuesday.

"If you choose to install XP SP3, Internet Explorer 7 will remain on your system after the install is complete," said Jane Maliouta, an IE program manager, in the blog entry. "Your preferences will be retained. However, you will no longer be able to uninstall IE7. If you go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out."

Heh, that's kinda scary... IE sucks, but don't you dare uninstall it! Ah well, I'll just shove it in a corner I suppose...
