question about ram

RhafeRhafe Member UncommonPosts: 11

What's the best option out of what i have, i have 4 channels that support DDR2 i have:

2 sticks of 1gig

1 stick of 2 gig

2 sticks of 512

currently right now i have inserted

the 2 sticks of 1g in the matched slots

1 stick of 512 matched with the 1 stick of 2 gigs

so i have 4.5 gigs in total

would it be better to remove the 1 512 gig thats matched with the 2 gig and and just leave that slot empty?

Is your ram all the same clock speed and brand?  And Im assuming its duel channel right?

    8GB G-skill Ripjaw 1600mhz

shouldn't it be in order from highest to lowest? like the 2g followed by the 1s and then 512?

Unless your running Vista. I would go with just the two 1gig sticks and add one more 1 gig stick for the best performance with XP. If you are running Vista...Pull the 512 stick and then later when ya can afford to...pull the two 1gig sticks and add 3 more 2 gig sticks. Windows Xp wont reconize anything more then three gigs.  And they say its a good idea to keep all your ram the same brand as well as speed. Make any sense?
