Recently ive noticed an alarming trend in MMORPG gamers. The majority of the current MMORPG gamers are waiting for that " next game". Why do we over-hype these games to kingdom come? it only makes it worse once we get it. No game is going to be the game to end all games. No game will ever match up to everyones expectations.
No matter what game you pick there is always something that will eventually drive you away from it and force you to look for that " next game to end all games". So it comes down to the little things. Rather than picking a game because it's new and everyone says it is good. Just pick a game for the minor features and work your way up from there.
Dont anticipate games so much only to disappoint yourselves when it arrives on store shelves. Some of the best games are ones that everyone hates. Its all a matter of preference.

I win.
Its all about hope. We hope the next game will be the greatest thing since the invention of the sandwich. We hope its going to be the perfect game. For me, I hope WoW and DnL will be god like. Why? Because im fuking bored and tired of these asian craptastic games and want a REAL next generation game. Ofcourse WoW and DnL will have plenty of bad things about them, but the games have the potential to be better than anything weve ever seen before. Hence the hope, hence the hype.

I believe we like to over-hype games because its of course our nature to do so. I mean we sit here and know that we are more than likely to be dissappointed but i believe that the anticipation and dreaming of what we are going to experience is what makes games half of what they are.
Ive quit playing mmo's altogether for now.Ive played since the days of UO and your right these games are soooo overhyped its not even funny.I doubt ill play another one ever again. There are only 2 that look halfway interesting to me and they are not fantasy mmo's at all.
The last good game that held my attention for more than a year was AO.Since then ive played a few but nothing compares.
At the moment im playing some xbox games. The reason for this is i can turn the machine on and just play.Sometimes thats all i want ,mmo's are such a timesink it makes logging on a dreadful experience at higher levels.I cant stand the concept of traveling for an hour to start a quest.
I read an article a couple of years ago just before SWG came out.It was about how online gaming was changing the console market and it mentioned some mmo's that were coming out.The article mentioned that within 10 years or so mmo's would either be extremely successful or a small blip on the radar of gaming history.
With mmo subscriptions down it seems the latter may be coming true.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
lol.......
If you have that kind of luck...hmmmm...maybe stay in bed or something.
We anticipate new games, movies, upcoming football seasons of our favorite team(pick any major professional or collegiate sport really) and other such events with high expectations. This game, this movie or this season is going to be so much better than the last one or another one. It is human nature to get excited about something new and different in our lives. When that something, whether it be a game, move, ect., doesn't meet our expectations, we as people usually react in one of a few ways.
1) Even though this is not as great as it was hyped up to be, this game is still very good and fun.
2)I'm very disappointed at the lack of this game's ability to meet the expectations I've read and heard about it, but it is the best thing out until {insert name of the next game to come out}.
3) This game was supposed so good from what I've heard and read about, but it freaking stinks worse than my uncle jed's hog farm on a hot summer day after it rains. I can't play this garbage, l8tr.
4)Gaming company CEOs sit in their chairs counting all the money they have made off their well marketed game which XXXXXXXX amount of people bought into the spun hype.
Of course I fall victim to the hype just like everybody else, but eh.......it could be worse. We could still all be playing Pong and watching Mystery Science Theatre reruns.

Personally, when I heard the E&B was being shutdown I was gutted and quit straight away. Then some friends were talking about City of Hero's and though "Now that looks fun!" got it, played it, beat people up, that was it, and quit. Now playing DAoC and Eve as they have soooo much content in them to hold my interest.
I don't think it was the hype that made me try CoH more to do with the fact I was looking to regain some of that community spirit that we had in Earth and Beyond. After playing CoH for a few months I realised it wasn't going to happen.
I'm hoping that I'll find that community spirit again but like one of the other posts mentioned, E&B was my first MMO so that was probably why I find it so exciting.

I don't know where you are getting your figures from but if anything MMO subscription is at a all time high.
Few years ago as you mentioned how many mmorpg were there?
Now we have very many so the community is diluted but the numbers are certainly high.
Lineage - 2 million
FFXI- long ago crossed the 500,000 mark
EQ- 500,000 mark
With so many like DAoC and CoH at the 200,000 makr and over.
Loads on the 50k to 100k mark
Now i am every sure even 3 years ago we did not have this amount of subs.
What companies are trying to do is bring consoles into the mmorpg market as FFXI did. Thus providing a bigger market .After all the price of a console is the same as just a good Gcard .
yes i agree mmorpg are been overhyped but thats the nature of the beast.

I am working on a UO dedication page for my site. It will be up in a few days. If you guys dont know what UO was ( Ultima Online) youve missed out. This page will be dedicated to the OLD SHOOL UO, BEFORE the second age. The times when the game was the best, before EA took over and sloshed it.
We will be having a petition signing for EA to bring up some old school uo servers . Should be interesting.
