IN 2003!
In an effort to remind people just what a mess SWG was in when it was released and for a great long time after (did it every work properly?) I thought I would post this link. I was actualy looking for a comic strip a guy wrote on gamespy but just stumbled upon this
http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/july03/starwarsgalaxies/index2.shtml
The first reviewer is being kind but she kept mentioning dying a lot so
"It's true I'm not making much money so far on these suicide-"missions" but hey, fortunately Twi'leks are also great dancers. When you see D'col shaking it in one of the Naboo cantinas, please, remember to generously tip the entertainers! "
Then there are the bugs .. did I mention bugs? yeah bugs .. released to early more bugs broken games.. and
"My recommendation? Wait a few months for them to iron out the problems, then join the game with a bunch of friends. You'll save yourself a lot of the frustrations I went through until my friends showed me how to work around the various bugs. "
And then there is the other crafter dude wanting to experience the economy .. and the bugs and the lag and
"There's real potential here, though. The biggest problem right now is that the game is currently really buggy. It's obvious that the game wasn't ready to release, but scuttlebutt has it that the word came down from LucasArts that the game was shipping regardless. I don't know if that's true, but the result is that they're now patching every couple days with the latest fixes. The result is that there's a kind of "avoid the bug!" meta-game going on right now.
Being a programmer and understanding the pressure you get from publishers to ship, I'm pretty laid back about the in-game bugs. They're paying a lot of attention to them and eventually I think things will be stable. I'm liking it a lot so far, but for some players the "just out of the oven" issues may be a big turnoff. "
Anyhow have fun remember "lag" "bugs" and "lucas arts released to early"

It's a testament to just how awesome the original game was that even with all those bugs it was the best mmorpg I've ever played.
This tactic doesn't really work because every vet I know admits that there bugs and problems with the original game. Our contention is that if SOE had just buckled down and fixed those issues instead of completely changing the game they would have held on to their current customers and added many more.
And aren't you the guy who just can't understand why people are arguing about a game that hasn't existed for three years? Why are you making posts like this?
Even with all the problems that the OP states, pre-CUNGE SWG was a far, far better game than the current version. The fact that even after 3 years people are still nostalgic for an "unfinished, buggy game" is testament to the potential of SWG. But The Powers That Be decided to scrap the whole system rather than fix the problems of the original and it blew up in their collective faces. Can't say I feel sorry for any one of them. They got what they deserved.
Scoreboard.
PreCU: 200,000+
NGE: Under 50,000 (I had my coffee and felt generous).
From these numbers, many conclusions can be drawn and further questions raised. One of which is that if PreCU was so bad, laggy and unplayable - how could that many people keep playing it? And next question, if it was that unplayable - how could I have kept playing it?
Yep, SWG was originally released far too early.
But so was the NGE.
The only difference is "potential" was a word thrown around quite a bit in those early days.
Thanks ummax,
You did a great job reinforcing how damn good the original version of this game was. Despite all of the bugs, the early release, and all the issues, it had the greatest and most loyal playerbase of all time. A lot of us are re-uniting in Age of Conan today, while you will sit here and play a dead game, with no depth, no soul, and with THE SAME BUGS and LESS fun.
You try to attack us all the time and question our sanity, have fun being 1 of 75 people on your server. No doubt that half of the remaining fools that pay for SWG will be going to AoC as well.

"When it came time to score Galaxies, I initially thought of all the bugs and broken areas, the steep subscription fee and poor customer service, the often slow-paced gameplay and as-yet unrealized potential of the game. And yet, even with all these drawbacks, I find myself hooked -- there's fun to be had, if you're willing to dig through the frustrations."
Hrm seems I hit a nerve or possibly a whole bundle.
Interesting aint it how most vets dont seem to be able to get their head around the fact that they played a bad game to start with and are basically accusing others of being idiots for playing something along the same lines when they did just the same thing.
so in answer to your questions why make a post like this
I will answer your question with a question. Why not?
And in the other posts here is a revelation
PEOPLE see WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE. In the present version you hate it so danged much you only SEE BAD and ignore good. In the past version YOU ONLY SAW GOOD and ignored THE BAD.
You do the same things as the players who remain and play the game so dont be so hard on them. They are people too. Accept the fact that there are still people who enjoy the game for what it is now and dont get all bent out of shape for what it was once before!
In other words stop putting players down because they enjoy a game you no longer enjoy!

That being said, you provide one hand picked review and build your arument upon it like it is the truth. Again, there were responses to your initial post that came with their own bit of evidence. Personally, I was rather fond of the post with all of the OTHER reviews that for the most part praised PreCU. Bad game? Sorry, missed those terms in the reviews.
I will be the first to claim it wasn't perfect but it sure was one of the best mmos I have ever played. No blinders on there. Simple truth in my world. Proof of that was in the amount of time and effort I devoted to it. And if you asked me my opinion of it back then, I would not have replied, "Its not bad..." as I have seen enough times on the NGE reviews by players. Quite frankly it was a better system and game than what currently exists on those sparsely populated servers.
Your opinion may differ and say its the reverse. For you that may be the case.
I remember the issues the game had at launch on day 1. I remember the issues the game had all the way up until the NGE. Even with the things that needed fixing SWG Pre-CU was the best MMO I've ever played. I would gladly take all of those issues back, every single one, to have the real SWG back.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

I agree, no one needs to call anyone an idiot if they do enjoy the current version though. However bashing the game and company itself is a personal FFA for me until the game no longer exists.

yes it had its problems but hey it has even more now......
Thanks for providing more evidence that helps the veterans' case.

Hmmm more evidence that you KNOW you are trolling, and intentionally stirring up trouble. Why is that?
Point of fact, everyone knows the game had problems pre-CU. That is not relevant to the discussion. Had they fixed those problems, the game would have gone from good to great. Instead, SOE chose to do the unethical -- and THAT is what people don't like. You are simply missinng what this discussion is about and reading your own things into it. for your own agenda. People see what they want to see, I suppose.
Pretty much everyone but five or six people know pre-CU was the better game, problems and all. THAT is the issue.

Actually, dear brother, I must clarify. It was released LATE, months past two blown, contractual deadlines. That being said it was ALSO released before it was ready. Further evidence of the mismanagement of Mr. Smedley throughout the project, and his failure to keep his word right from the very beginning.
To say it was released "too early" without clarification makes it sound as if they weren't late.
It's like when a kid is two weeks late on his paper, then hands it in, and does so without footnotes, a bibliography, and unedited. It was still late, but it was also not ready to be handed in.

Yeah he is just using his ONLY tactic, psychoanalyze his opposition (in this case claming we are perceiving things wrongly, and his perception is more reasonable). More bad form arguments that miss the whole point of the discussion. But, that's what people who don't have a case are forced to do if they want to continue to defend the indefensible.

Here's what I saw shortly after release: Too many bugs and a lot of space on worlds that could have been used for content that wasn't developed yet.
Here's what I saw people asking for: fixed bugs, less dependence on doctor buffs, more content in the beautiful worlds that were created.
Here's what I saw people receive: the combat upgrade that didn't fix the bugs, introduced more bugs, introduced an unwanted level system, introduced a number of unwanted ridiculous looking graphics that were thankfully removed, borked many aspects of crafting, but did also make people less dependent on doctor buffs.
Here's what I saw after the combat upgrade: bugs getting worked out slowly, profession revamps being implemented, new expansion generating some fresh excitement.
Here's what I saw immediately thereafter: SOE and LA deleting professions that they just revamped, features and functions of the brand new expansion were rendered useless, combat broken, chat broken, crafting useless, pets gone, etc. etc. etc..
Here's what I've seen since the NGE: SOE and LA slowly adding back features that they deleted with the NGE, but in less desirable forms, many of the old bugs still present (nge and pre-nge bugs), small content additions being made by a badly overstretched development team, with some of the new content also experiencing serious bugs and issues.
Here's what I see in the OP, an overgeneralization about former players' viewpoints, and perhaps an attempt to downplay their valid concerns. Did the game have problems at release? Yes, see my first few lines. Did SOE and LA successfully address these problems? No, in fact their interventions repeatedly and consistently made a bad situation worse. Over and over again they made the game worse and treated their customers poorly. That's why the playing community is so divided, and that's why the game is so empty.
Should current and former player respect one another? I think so. Former players lost their game and community. Current players are afraid to lose theirs. That's common ground for me. What I don't respect is the poor management of the StarWars Galaxies game and player communities by the parent companies. Destroying something that one target audience was invested in, then building something out of the wreckage and offering it to another target audience was an extremely divisive management strategy. It has had the exact result that a clear thinking management team would have predicted.
Actually, dear brother, I must clarify. It was released LATE, months past two blown, contractual deadlines. That being said it was ALSO released before it was ready. You, my friend, are correct.
I am both and I am actualy tired of being slammed as a vet who decided to return to the game and actualy found it fun. That's what this post is about.
"ummax likes dummed down games better"
"ummax is not a vet because they play the game now"
'ummax must work for soe"
"ummax is an idiot"
I'm kinda tired of hearing it from people who go to the other forum from the vet forum with the same tired arguments over and over again. That and the demands for proof. So as I said before that game is gone. I liked it yes, but I like the present one too possibly even better to be honest as I find more and more content and things to do when I dont want to pvp. I actualy experience far less bugs then I did back then. Many people complain of rubber banding even those I am playing with and I hate to say it I think its associated to their ISP and not sony because well I dont rubber band. I remember I used to /sit on the floor in the med center (i was a combat medic trying to level up) and one minute I would be on one end of the med center and another minute I will visibly slide across the floor to the other end of the room. That stuff is gone. I hate that this was brought to this subforum as I try to stay out of here to be honest lol its like going into a den of wolves at times so I rarely post in this forum and have said like 2 things in this forum. Anyhow to me its over I truly don't understand how you can become embroiled in the fabric of a game to mourn its loss for three years and twist every single thing to your point of view even if it is in fact the opposite. Here is the bottom line if I have made a generalization its a generalization about vets using this forum not about vets "in general" because I play with many vets and I am a vet. My generalization is this. There is a small fraction of the SWG community that has become somehow married to the old version of the game and well the divorce was long over. I dont know how else to say it, but yeah I have come to a conclusion about vets who use this forum and it is that they can't let go. Not all vets are like that in fact I would say most are NOT like that. Only the ones that use this forum and continually post about "then and now" and how much better it was after such a long time. As I said I dont think either version is better then the other and if any version is better its possibly the present one. In the end though it does not matter one Iota its just a game and if you dont like it after 3 years its time to pick up another one or get a different hobby. Model plains or cars or play darts or something.. I dunno /shrugs

So you're embarassed about having bad taste in games and decided to troll these forums?
The conclusion is that when it came out it was the first starwars mmo and the only starwars mmo, so people flocked to it, it had bad reviews then and was a mess some people left, and some people stayed and got used to it as the broken crap it was, and when it changed to the cu the balance and all the fixes and making it the way it should have been threw everyonwe off as sudden as it happened, it is much better play wise than it was before, we were just used to it being broke and buggy and exploitable so it became the norm and a change from a persons normal state whether they are used to it being broke or wrong, it feels comfortable, and fixing the game needed a complete overhaul to fix and this disturbed many peoples comfort zone they had with the game, that being after a year of playing a broke junky game we came comfortable with and it being the only starwars mmo is what flocked so many people at first, the people were slowly dropping off pre-cu/nge i seen my guild dwindle way before cu/nge.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Well to be fair after he complains about us bashing SWG he goes to the Pirates of the Burning Sea forum and bashes that game. Not quite sure why *that* is ok but us bashing SWG isn't...
