Meeting people for Real from MMORPG's

clinteastclinteast Member UncommonPosts: 159

Hi Chaps and Gals.

I am just curious have people on here ever met other people that they have played along side in game from a MMORPG.

Myself I played UO-AC-many others then came DAoC.  Joined a guild on UK Server Excalibur realm and met some guys from Three Lions guild and Chaos Theory.

Eventually some peeps left Three Lions and joined Chaos Thoery and after several months we all decided to meet up and take a "Tour of Albion" which included going to Llyn Barfog, Hadrians Wall, Snowdonia and Cornwall etc.

Much fun but weird camping with 8+ people you have never ever met before and hoping that zip on your tent at night was not going to open by some mass murder.

P.s. Sad to say I enjoyed the holiday but it felt weird not watching tv or playing on pc for a week.. I am a geek!!

Poor is the man whoose pleasure depends on the permission off another

Yep, I was the leader of one of the first guilds on my server in EQ (guild still exists, but I retired), and I met most of the guild during the years I was playing. Of course, some of the members were people I already knew in real life (2 of my brothers and some real life friends of ours), but there were a lot of good people we met online that we got to meet in person as well.

I also met some of the people I knew in the text MUD I played before EQ (Dragonrealms), at a Simutronics gathering in Vegas. They (Simutronics) would hold player get-togethers every year at different locations, kinda like the EQ Fan Faires.

I met a few people from the guild I started once because they lived near where my family lived. I had gone up to visit my family and hooked up with them for a night. Had a lot of fun drinking and just talking. That was kind of cool to finally meet people on the other side of the game.

Yes i went for a night out in London and met a lot of my old EQ members.

Then when i went to Florida i met up with someone from the same guild there.

I missed out on a night out with my DAoC here in UK due to work so never got to meet anyone from it.

I worked with someone from the following game so know them in real life- AC2,horizons and planetside.

Not really met up with anyone I didn't already know in RL but I've spoke to them via Roger Wilco, Team Speak and now Skype aswell.

Some of my friends went to the Earth & Beyond gathering in London and said it was great fun.

Cool another DR player.  I played DR for over 5 years (1997-2003) on and off (mainly on).  I never got a chance to go to a Vegas Con but I did go to a Simucon (2001).  That's the only place I've ever met people I had only known from a MMORPG.  Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet with anyone I played alot with but I did meet a lot of other players who I then started to talk to more ingame.

I don't know about camping with guildmates for a week.  That does seem a little scary.  LOL.

Our UO guild got together once. It was fun. It was good to put faces to the names.

My EQ guild has regular get-togethers, but they are in Florida, and I haven't gotten down there yet. I've seen a lot of pictures of said gatherings, though, so at least I will know who is who if I ever do get there.

What country are we talking if this went ahead I am assuming the USA...

Yeah went to stonehenge and all but it wasnt as impressive as I thought it would be but was nice to visit that mystical place and listen to radio type thingie telling me all about the olden days...

Its weird you get this impression off people online and when you meet them they are like either 7ft tall or 3ft small.  My mates thought I would be a big fella but only 5ft 6 inches no bigger than a umpah loompah image

    Yep, several times actually.

I have been in the same guild since Diablo came out ... what 7 years ago? Met an amazing bunch of people, played way too many games to keep up with, and we've been friends ever since. Although I haven't met them all by a long shot, I have made a few trips myself for real life meetings.

One was a meet and greet during Origins weekend in Ohio. One was a scheduled weekend and cookout in Ohio, and another time I flew out to Oregon for a long weekend of all out LAN and D&D geekiness image

I've even had several of my guildies travel from out of state to visit me during my 40th birthdat bash.

I missed out on a California trip due to schedule conflict. I am looking forward to seeing what we can plan for this year.

I think I started in late 95 or early 96. It was right after it came onto AOL from Prodigy, and it was still free. Well, it wasnt free for the folks who played it on Prodigy if you've heard the horror stories of the thousand dollar phone bills.

I played until just around Jul 99, because that's when I tried EQ and cancelled my DR account. I recall the last major happenings in DR that I saw before I quit were the opening of the islands, and the Elunid Festival (the first festival in DR that actually cost real life money to attend). I actually attended that, and bought the first genie bottle at the auction.

I met my fiance in Saga of Ryzom back when it was in open beta.  We got to talking and it turned out we lived in the same city.  We decided to meet in real life and the rest is history.

She got into the focus beta, I did not.  They just let in a bunch of applicants into the beta including me so now I can play the game again with her, yay!  I was expecting I would have to wait until next week when they open the beta again.

Congrats on finding someone to share your life with.....both in the real world and in the fantasy world.

I've been trying to get into SoR FBT, but my app doesn't go thru because of some error with my email which I or the techs haven't figured out other than I've moved and have changed my email address even though I changed it in my profile. Oh well. Have fun in SoR and have fun on the marriage journey as well.image

I met a woman when i played UO who lived in Minnesota. She paid for a bus ticket for me to come half way accross the country to see her. When i got there, she was all over me, and one thing led to another.

But alas, she wasnt that good in bed, so i left the next day. ::::09::

    Yes

First time we did it was when someone in a guild we were in in MIR said jokingly that they were having a party and all were invited. We took her up on it and a few of us from the guild went. It was also the first time myself and my wife had flown hehe. Was a frightening experience at first but after that we never looked back.

Since then we joined DAoC (3 years ago) and have met lots of people from game. Stayed with people and had some stay with us to. In fact in a couple of weeks were having another meet up with some as theres a real life wedding between players.

When you play alongside someone for as long as you do with MMORPG's you tend to get a feel about them and although I would never have considered meeting someone from the internet before, after the first time Im so glad I did. Rewarding and life long friendships with people from different countries abound.
