The graphics in FFXI are designed so that users with 56k modems have the same access as those with broadband. This is also why the data transfer rate of any connection to FFXI is locked at 56k. So don't count on any graphics upgrades.
YEAH...NO!!! they wont ever change their graphics no matter how hard you try. the game was made to be flexible...and on top of that if they did...the PS2 subs would have to cancel because the console couldnt run it.
Although this game is starting to look outdated, it is still an amzaing looking game for its age. The detail in the armor models really makes it stand out for me. I cant wait to see what square enix has in store for their next mmo simply codenamed Rapture and is being made by same ffxi devs.
WOTG was suppose to see us go from 8.1 to dirext X 9.0c. Let me remind you that this was a Nov launch.
Problem is Ps2 hinders everything related to the game. Not to mention this game is old and outdated. S.E isnt' ging to send the cash to upgrade anything.
There is no need to update this game at all! It looks good and rivals most newer games even today after 6 yrs! The game mechanics and how it plays are way deeper and much better than most games as well.
I do like some flashy realistic GFX on occasion but every new game coming out seems to be trying to push every little detail is far as possible and in result the game sucks...yeah it looks good but, story, systems, menus everything else is horrible.
Simple looking with a very deep and an endlessly challenging system works great and I hope Square sticks to that mold and never folds to easy-mode like all the new-gen games and MMOs.

You know to be honest I think the graphics actually look nice in this game. I dislike some of the graphics in some of the newer games and i absolutely hate the cartoony look that a lot of games are copying from WoW. FFXI has a somewhat toonish look to it but its got that Final Fantasy feel and i love that aspect of it.
For the PS3 port of FFXI there is already an effort to bring the graphics up to snuff, but I don't expect this particular build to get into the hands of PC owners, but none the less, the engine is extendible if they're doing the art update for the PS3. *shrugs*
The square team has already responded to this topic in the past and made it VERY clear,it will NEVER happen. They said it would be like re making the whole game and would take far too much effort.
BTW the game can at times lag very bad as it is now ,imagine high poly meshes and hi res textures? whoa total lag and tons of bandwidth needed.
They started that huge project novalis crystalis whereby there suppose to continue the whole crystal war final fantasy theme over several platforms...phone/handheld/gamecube/several others.I am just waiting for there effort on a new PC/PS3 game to continue on,as they have pretty much covered al lthe platforms now. It's been a few years since they started the whole thing, but i'm sure trying to appease so many platforms takes alot of time and resources.

Am I the only one that likes the FFXI art style as is? There's only so many ways the graphics could be upgraded (effects, reflections, etc) but still stay true to the original style... Although I don't play it any longer (unless someone wants to change that by sending me a buddy pass *hint hint* lol), I would probably not like any massive change to the overall style. It's kind of like getting used to the way a certain comic is drawn and then having a different artist take over and start drawing everything in a different way even if they try to stay true to the original artists style - the change just doesn't look 'right'.

But that's my .02 cents.
There is actually a fair bit you can do to upgrade graphics. There is nothing wrong with FFXI's art style at all.If you ever played the original unreal tournament ,it came with regualr textures and hi res textures. The difference was amazing and that's without doing any extras like adding shader technology.
I do admit that they/square did a very good job with the amount of detail they used in there textures but,too bad the whole game was limited by the playstation system and bandwidth they could/would allow the game.
I posted the video here before from a few years back in the electronics show whereby they showed the start of a new gen game using there new engine at the time. That was still using old tech but showed an amazing world and tons of detail.

I agree that FFXI still has decent style/graphics. I don't think that Square Enix needs to launch a FFXI makeover right now, at least not as much as launching a next-generation MMORPG. I'll probably play Aion and wait for it until my hair turns gray!
You know what would be great and would make every PS2/PC/360 player etc happy?? Just ( And I KNOW it's not a simple matter of just a flip of a switch it I know I know. )
Change the current FFXI engine for the FFXII engine!! Looks a lot better, play better, etc etc etc.
And don't start flaming about: "FFXII sucks anyway bla bla bla" I am just talking about the engine...

The game looks fine to me. It's a bit dated but the textures and game in general looks amazing.
