I've been playing DDO ever since the early release and I still love the game, but I'm looking at checking out some new worlds. I don't know a ton about Guild Wars, but I've been trying to read up on it and check things out regarding the game.

I tried out LotRO and was not happy with it at all. I've played WoW a few times and I don't enjoy that most of the crowd appears to be 12 years old...

So, coming over from DDO, are there any similarities that might draw me into this game a bit more? Any inside info would be great... I'm reading up on the forums, but some personal responses would be cool.

My three favorite mmo's of all-time, DDO, GW's and COH, the main reasons great balanced combat model/group play. And DDO and GW's imo have the best PvE missions, I still give DDO an edge there though. But then GW's has wonerful henchman and detailed combat skills imo that are the best in the biz. GW's then has wonderful balanced PvP if you are into that, PvP on a small personal level. I playerd it quite a bit, go back to it from time to time. Great game and of all things in development I await GW2 the most. The technical achievement of this team imo is the best in all of gaming, yes that high. Started by ex-Blizzard heads, these were the good one's that left early into WoW, not the crappy flagship team and today Blizzard is just name of the great people that were once there. But this is the group that invented battlenet, which their engine in GW's shows. All the packs make a huge game, each pack is pretty sizeable on it's own. The only thing I never really liked with the limit of 8 skills, or not being able to switch them mid-mission.

Is the combat system similar to DDO? I've also played EQ and EQ2 a bit and I'm not much of a fan of those types of combat systems.

No it's very different from all of those. It's fast paced and strategic with the decks you get to build. The animations/models are still some of the best if not the best. GW's has a fairly unique system, it does lock on a target and then you get to use you chain-skills.

The game has a pretty good plot along with some wonderful graphics, interesting quests, enjoyable missions, and easy to get into. On the other hand, the community has gotten really sad and pathetic with the amount jut there to use the game as a chat room and to see armorless characters (nearly naked) around town in pre of ascalon and the monestary.

Actually, this is a game to try but, look through the game list here first to try some that are actually free, though still consider this one unless you hate a bad community.

I would have to agree that the community has deteriorated in the last couple of years, but what I like is that unless I just want to stand around in a town that community has little effect.

One of the features that keep me playing GW is that unless I'm involved in Guild V Guild or other PVP activities, I take my group of friends and leave town, then all I have is my group and the PVE environment to contend with.

Also when in town I turn local chat off, and use my guild chat, or team chat. Usually most of the people I play with use a voice chat such as Ventrilo or teamspeak, which greatly enhances our gameplay.

In my opinion this is definitely a game worth checking out, as it has loads of content that will keep you out of town most of the time.

Guild wars for me, now that I have completed the storyline in Prophesies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the north is mostly about exploration and PvE combat. I find the graphical detail, such as falling leaves, flying birds, even bugs interesting while exploring new areas. The combat can get quite intense when you attack a small mob, and suddenly every mob in the area rushes in to join the fight.

Part of the attraction to this game for me, which some see as a bad thing, is that I can group up with friends and head out of town with just my friends and the environment to interact with, unless I specifically feel like PvP it isn't required.

Another part is that if none of my friends are on, the Heroes and henchmen allow me to play solo in almost any area of the game. This is a big plus as most of my GW friends are geographically spread all over the world and because of time differences sometimes grouping becomes a bit hard to arrange. Sometimes when my friends are not available I jump into some of the midlevel areas and just help people asking for help on missions or quests, or drop into low level areas and give away some of the weapons picked up in higher areas. Random acts of kindness that may make some strangers day playing GW a little more pleasant.

I guess I just like the overall ambience of Guild Wars more than Eve or other online games I have tried. This one has kept me playing for over two years now, and that is easily the longest I have stayed with any Game.

Hope that explains why I like this game, and I as well as most of my online friends are over 40 which may explain why the exploration and trying to see and discover everything, even areas not needed for the storyline, appeals to us. Excitement of combat, tempered with the quiet time of admiring the new scenery, and sometimes new types of foes, we discover along the way.

It's quite a good review. I did notice a few errors, such as the reviewer complaining about leveling getting tedious past level 20 (?) among other small details like believing you have to play through the roleplaying campaign to unlock skills, but it's rare to see a review of Prophecies from fairly recent and as such does the game justice in most regards.

    This....

Nobody farming your mobs, no ninja killing something you need to kill, no ninja looters, no knuckleheads....just you and your friends or henchmen in your own private copy of the world.  Towns and Outposts will allow you to see other players to chat, team up, or make new friends.

I'm an exception I suppose. Fav online games are GW's, CoH and DDO. The thing I feel the three have in common is great combat models. Other good performance in general and solid gfx.
