Should I stay or should I go now? :)

Hey everyone.  I have a quick question regarding the similarities betweeon LOTRO and AoC.  I had just recently started to play LOTRO and i do have to admit the game is fun but the combat is the only thing i am getting a bit tired of.  I have played WoW, FFXI, and EQII and they all (except ffxi) have around the same concept of combat.  I have seen videos of AoC and it does seem a bit different also i have read many articles to find you are more invovled in combat then the usual (Click 1- +) and hope for the best technique.

My real question is this.  I enjoy LOTRO online because of the story it has to offer, the lore, the world, the quests, the crafting, and the great community.  The only downside is the combat (for those interested in LOTRO, there is nothing wrong with the combat, i am just bored of the same routine).  If i were to leave LOTRO online for these reasons, would i find them in AoC with the combat resolution i am looking for?  I am very sorry if this sounds like chopped words but i have no other way to put it.  If you guys say so i will just go out and buy the game today.  Thanks :)

if you are looking for community, this isnt it. just got my char to level 16 in tortage. no one talks to me, no one answer any questions, i dont really even see anyone else asking questions either. it pretty much seems like i am playing the game alone, because everything is instanced, and no one groups.

The combat ins Age of Conan has a LOT of mix reviews. Some absolutely love it, some thinks its the same thing as every other MMO but with a new dress on, some think its ok, and others despise it.

I still dont know where i stand on the issue.  I think I am so-so with it.  I dont love the combat system.  In my opinion, (as a conqueror) im spending my entire time during combat staring at the keys Im mashing in versus looking on the screen to take in the full effects of the bloody massacre.

I also think this game is HEAVILY geared towards melee classes. I dont think magic users gets much love here.

If I go there will be trouble

An if I stay it will be double

    aye,

The community is REALLY bad.  Whenever Im on you pretty much see the know-it-all asshole who just left his 14 lvl 70 toons from WoW to come here so he has the right to put down everyone.  Either that, or you don't hear anyone at all.

Plus the zones are set up very badly. There's like only 50 people per zone but the /ooc channel covers ALL of them. And the chat feature is pretty bad too as well as other things.

Its funny with a popular UI Modder for EQ2 and WoW already created a UI for AoC that is 1000000000000 times better than the original UI.  The default UI here is really REALLY bad.  All of your icons and windows are like you are playing in 100x300 resolution.  Everything is just so frigging big (and this is with my 1400x900 settings).

Half of everything doesn't work yet. No banks and traders yet. Don't know if there is a mail system either. Certainly not the ground breaking jaw dropping MMO i was thinking

    What server are you on?

I play on the RP PvP server and I can get groups at anytime, as a question in OOC and get an answer quickly.  Tons of people talking and having fun. Alot of the quest in tortage are single player quests but there are a few that needs groups.

Might want to find a guild or another server.  I dont have any of the issue you have.

The combat system is great.  As Necromancer, I love watching my spell effects, they are great.  I have great AoE spells and good dots.... I am lvl 22 and I can summon up to 3 pets right now... The Necromancer is alot like the Diablo 2 Necromancer.

AoC rocks and is arguably the best mmo on the market right now.

The first 20 levels are solo.

The combat is simply refreshing and amazing all at the same time.

The graphics are extremely well done.

The classes well thought out, lots of quests to do.

Join a good guild if you are having problems finding good people to group with.

I played Lotro in open beta but never bought it retail - too much same old same old for me. With AoC I can't stop playing!

well i have heard many mixed reviews from the combat as well.  I appreciate the responses but in LOTRO being a melee fighter is well,  fairly boring.  I guess i will just wait for AoC to have a free trial then i guess i will give it a shot. I dont know what i should do.  I know there is a free month once u purchase the game but that month cost me 49.99 if i dont like the game.  Is there not some type of guild, or kinship type thing?

Once you experience the combat of AoC - you will never go back to Lotro

Hmm on the RP PvP server... OOC is almost non stop, yea some is useless but that comes with online gaming Post WoW but most of it is very useful.    I have 12 people on my friends list already and that doesnt count anyone in my guild.

I have been in countless groups both in Tortage and since leaving.... Only been ganked a few times and one was a miss understanding between me and the other guy..... I used an AoE to close to him and he though I was attacking him and killed me while I was killing a boss.... no big deal, we talked about it afterwords and worked it out...

I guess try a different server or if you dont want to do that join a guild.... Dont know what you tell you but I am enjoy the community for the most part on my server.

    US RP PvP server.

Obviously its your server, I'm on RP PVP Cimmira as well and Lots of people are talking, not only do I get jumped by a Idiot, but I also get help by other players. This server is awesome. a few gankers but even more PKKers

If you don't know what PKK means then you obviously never been on a PVP server.

I believe they have had some issues with the chat .....well they did on the Europe servers. level 0-20 is almost tutorialish and the main quest line here is single player. The mulitiplayer bits are easy enough solo. (as an aside despite playing on a FFA server it is not a gank fest, well not at the moment anyway). I have grouped a few times after Tortage (the starter areas) though there is still a fair amount (too much) solof running around. This leads on to :-

Quests, I think they are pretty good certainly on a par with Lotro (though they are more wieghty than simply 'deliver pies') Tortage has full voice and most of the voice acting was pretty good I thought. As I progress I am finding the quests a bit 'grindy' maybe a bit too much running around rather than killing stuff. I'd like to see a few more transport options pre mount at 40. Content (as far as I have seen so far) is pretty rich and has a charm (albeit harsh!) that I am enjoying (I thought lotro had charm too).

Combat is a bit different perhaps not quite as radically as some would say.

I am not sure what mileage you expect out of a $50 game but I have had my  value from it already so anything else is a bonus.

PvE realms is no guarante for a good community, most likely the opposite since this is where you will find the newbies, people with very little mmorpg experience and thus taking the easy path. There is no pressure to team up either or competion to lvl fast to not get ganked by high-lvl players.

So I do understand that it is silent. Even if it sounds like suicide, give the pvp realms a try. Sure you will get ganked a lot, but many will be in the same situation as you and those are the one you talk too.

And there is a possibilty that Wiccana is far from full, since AoC is known for being a PvP game and that is what players will be looking for.

It certainly looks like AoC will attract quite many DAoC players by looking on different forums, but somehow I doubt you will find any of those in the PvE realms. And the more DaoC players the better.

The first 20 levels are solo.- Which is why I might argue with you, not real thrilled with this 20 level single player RPG tutorial e I'm currently running through.

The combat is simply refreshing and amazing all at the same time. - Hmm, refreshing and amazing eh?  Must come at higher levels.  My Tempest of Set relys on 3 spells really, with the most useful being the one I started with at level 1.  Of course, I'm only level 12, so I'll withhold judgement for now.

The graphics are extremely well done. - Sometimes.  There are also weird gaps.  I ran into a small boy npc in town and it was like he was half finished.  His head was perfectly rendered, but his arms in particular looked like they were placeholder graphics, was totally startling and out of place.  But overall, I'm really pleased with the graphics.

The classes well thought out, lots of quests to do. - Can only speak to one class, and so far it seems pretty fun.  My son however isn't real thrilled with his Bear Shaman yet, he's hoping it improves shortly. The quests and story lines are quite good though, no complaints from me there. (and I haven't been sent out to kill any boars)

Join a good guild if you are having problems finding good people to group with. - Seriously, like its that easy to find/join a good guild.  Might be the single most important and challenging part of starting in any new MMO for me.... and you make it sound like its easy as falling off a log.  Its not.

I played Lotro in open beta but never bought it retail - too much same old same old for me. With AoC I can't stop playing! - Well, so far, I haven't seen enough to make any sort of judgment.  However to the OP, if you haven't invested a lot of time in LoTRO, I think it might be a good idea for you to drop it and give AOC a trial.  Game seems to be pretty slick and fun, (can't wait to get out of the tutorial) and it certainly is the place to be atm.

I didn't notice any lack of people talking, in fact it was getting to be to much for me. Never had any problem getting into a group, in fact usually i would get to many group requests in certain zones. The spawn rates for many of the mobs seemed to me to be a bit on the slow side and usually when I did group it was with people camping the same boss mob for the same quest i was on.

I've been playing Eve for the last 3 years and didnt know what to expect from AoC. I'm really enjoying it so far but I have so far only played it to lvl 19. The PvP is nice but having people sitting in wait for you to start fighting a mob so they can rush in and gank you gets pretty old fast when you're trying to do a quest and they're way higher level then you are.  This game has epic griefing potential if that's your thing.

After getting off Tortage (the starting area) I only played for a couple hours but it was noticeably not as fleshed out as Tortage was. The quests for the beginners were actually fun and I actually read what the NPCs were saying and actually gave a s*** which normally in a game i just end the talk as fast as possible then read the breakdown on what i had to do to complete the quest.

The combat system is nice especially for people who always felt left out in other games who liked to play the fighter classes. I havnt tried any of the mage classes but am having a lot of fun with my Conqueror and will be trying the assassin next.

All in all i say it's a good game so far and Funcom has a lot of experience running an MMO so I have good reason to suspect that many of the bugs will be fixed soon but I havnt noticed very many.
