Haven't played a Guardian though I have been killed by one several levels higher, and with a polearm he hit pretty hard.
My entirely opinion based guess would be that they are more of a support class, using the charge and large sweeping arcs of their polearms to stun and inflict average damage on large numbers of targets. The collision detection will also mean that they may, with a shield, be effective at blocking small areas and protecting ranged dps and healers
Shadow Guild Leader of Dynasty, Stygian Casual Core PvE based guild on EN Fury PvP.
Played gaurdian in pvp mayhem weekend. They do very good. Make no mistake about it, soldiers are rogue bane. Ofcourse this is from a lvl 20 prespective mind you. Damage wise, you can tell the difference from a rogue and guard, but they still do enough to drop someone fairly quickly. One thing that is very nice about AoC is, if you have heavier armor you can actually tell you have it heh. Comparing it to eq2 for example, armor was important for sure, but the difference between say chain and plate was not very big. Rogues killed you in a heartbeat... In AoC, this isn't the case that I have seen. Fighter classes (soldiers) will be very good end game I am thinking, pvp and pve.
On a side note, I am playing ranger, just love the class. But guardian will be my 2nd main for sure after the pvp weekend thingy. I keep wanting to log off my ranger to lvl the guard heh, must fight that urge.
I can only imagine what a guard in full plate will be capable of heh.
