Age of Conan ships so far 800k on launch day

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Age-of-Conan-Release-is-a-Sold-Out-Hit-85928.shtml

There are many voices claiming that Ago of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is the title that could take the throne of best MMORPG from World of Warcraft. Although a few years behind and with a different, more "mature" approach to the game, Age of Conan really is a competitor to the throne. It will probably remain like that since the WoW-mania seems hard to beat at the moment, but that does not matter too much.

What matters is that Funcom's MMO will be officially, fully released tomorrow, on the 20th of May (with a 23rd of May release date set for Europe) and the game is already sold out almost everywhere. In a press statement earlier this day, Funcom proudly announced that all the Collector's Edition had sold out weeks ago and extra copies had been ordered - only to sell out, as well. Also, the regular pre-order campaign is working great and the developers are having trouble already due to server limitations and lack of physical copies of the game!

All in all, 111,000 Collector's Edition units have been sold since January and no less than 700,000 regular units are expected to be sold only in North America on day one. No matter if we're talking about a MMO or an offline game, these numbers are really impressive. And, since they're probably going to grow as soon as people start talking about the game, Funcom has decided to order extra servers in order to facilitate handling more customers.

"Everyone in Funcom is delighted and humbled with the historical pre-order numbers for Age of Conan. If the information we have is correct, they represent the highest pre-order number for any global launch of an original PC game, ever, including the original World of Warcraft launch," said Morten Larssen, Funcom’s VP of Sales & Marketing.

So, it seems that battle is on! Might good old World of Warcraft lose in front of the Cimmerian?

my 2 cents,  Funcom has earned it-- now the next hurdle is to see how many of those sales turn into monthly subscriptions. If  over 250k on the first , second, and third month . . then there is absolutely nothing else to be said if this game is a failure or not.

Also, the MMO genre was long over due to have a success story. Not in the sense that one game will be better than another, but for the premise that the mmo genre can still be a place where evolution still thrives, and people, both constumers and developers alike, can nod their had in satisfaction and to say to the rest of the gaming industry, "we can still move forward".

I will be rooting for WAR to be just as successful if not more, because this industry still needs this kind of positive feedback more than ever.

As for everyone else,  See you guys in Hyboria

700,000 expected to be sold is not the same as actually  sold:) Now i hope it does and yes it all depends on how many retained. It will be a success IMO but not even close to WOW s numbers. I m not a WOW fan at all never really have been but they have the time and money to do whatever they want unfortunately to counter anything any company does so we ll see. I believe AOC had 1 million sign up for beta total(correct me if i m wrong) which is impressive, but i can t honestly see all of those signed up going to play it long term or at all. WAR has 700k+ and it s a few months from OB at least, i expect it to top AOC s beta numbers and subs but hopefully the 2 combined can drop down WOW a notch or 2. Only time will tell.

Funcom has revealed that it has not been able to fulfill all orders for the upcoming Age of Conan in all markets despite shipping 700,000 copies on day one, and that the Collector’s Edition has already sold out.

The total print run for the Collector’s Edition will stand at 110,000, with no additional reprints.  The Collector’s Edition may however be available at retail.

While Funcom did not release exact numbers relating to customer pre-orders, it did say in a statement that those numbers were “impressive”. Morten Larssen, VP of sales and marketing for Funcom, said of this number, “Everyone in Funcom is delighted and humbled with the historical pre-order numbers for Age of Conan. If the information we have is correct, they represent the highest pre-order number for any global launch of an original PC game, ever, including the original World of Warcraft launch.”

Funcom has stated that the inability to fulfill all orders for the game in all markets is related due to limitation in server capacity, and that more servers will be made available. In addition, the company has stated that the DirectX 10 version of the game has been delayed, and will be next available for preview in late August at the German Games Convention in Leipzig.

Dont mean to spoil the fun but Funcom is shipping 700K copies IN TOTAL. 110K CE and 590K Regular games.

Still its like 170K more than WOW shipped when the opened in US and EU. together.

wont be hearing reliable numbers for a week

selling to Retail   vs selling to players

    are 2 different things

WOW didnt release their record breaking "day one" sales until the necessary information was available

Not really. Still a lot of things wrong with it.

We also have to remember this game is the only thing new for awhile now(TR and POTBS are but not ) Anyone that is remotely bored atm will buy it. I didn t but thats another story. I think once WAR OB comes closer and between WAR and WOW/LK are near it won t retain close to it s numbers the first few months will have. Then theres Aion and TCOS which will dent it as well. It will do well but in the end i think they would be lucky to have 300-500k long term subs. Thats still good but i m really finding it hard to believe 1 mill subs for a long stretch.

this will sound crazy, but i do not think funcom really wants to hit 1 million so quickly and not have the servers to support it.

from what i have seen, they are focusing on added servers and improving the stabilitiy of the overall game.

there in it for the profit more than the numbers, and the 110,000 CE comfirmed sales brings them almost halfway closer to making a profit.

Aside from the 24 hour Pvp gank sessions (and they are extremely violent)  this has been a good launch.

Yep, it's 700k total (including the CE), not 800k.

I think AoC is doing well, and will continue to do well in the near future. This game is solid. Never have I had so much fun playing a priest before! So far it's taken some of the better aspects of previous champion games both single player and MMORPG alike, and put them together fairly well. Most MMO's can be done in singleplayer if you try hard enough, this game is no different. But for someone to say it is lacking in multiplayer pve content is rediculous, and even in Tortage there is a fair amount of multiplayer PvE content, it is just an option you have to seek out for yourself.

I give this game current an 8/10, once I am higher level I forsee that raising to a 9 and eventually with endgame and sieges possible a 9.5/10. I can't allow myself to give this game a ten only because without player looting and PK penalties, this game will always be lacking when it comes to open world pvp, not to say that it's lacking in that area will be any different than every other big mmo out there, but still in my minid when it comes to open world pvp, theres nothing better than good people being good because they don't murder, and bad people being bad because they murder and steal (or like i used to do in original UO, stalk someone in the woods then jump out, kill them, loot them, run off into the woods.)

Great game in my opinion. I hope to see more subscriptions and more servers soon. Maybe a Cultural PVP-RP server! or a PvE-RP server!

Its an amazing game besides the fact it has alot of bugs and glitchs..But wtf, thats expected from an MMO launch, so many idiots and morons complaining about bugs..Obv you nubs have never played a title at launch before..

    Awesome game

I see it getting better in the future, These numbers will jump higher within the next 6 months for reasons as - alot of MMOr's prefer to play a title after it is launched for a bit so the company has time to fix the remaining issues.

I find this number hard to believe.  I logged into the game last night and hardly any servers had a heavy population.  On launch day there servers should have been pounded.  Or this can show they added way to many server and might cause population issues in the future.

This is exactly right. Launches are NEVER perfect and NEVER will be.

Does anyone remember WoW launch? that was horrible! but look at how well they're doing now.

It all depends on how well the developers can fix the bugs, glitches and other problems and how decent the content will be when they add new stuff.

I played for about 7 hours after I got home from work. I would have to say it was the smoothest launch I've seen thus far and I've been playing MMO's since Meridian 59 / Ultima Online era. In 7 hours there were no crashes and on medium settings the game ran smooth as silk. I really wasn't expecting it to run as well as it did. I think I may be done with WoW atleast until their expansion. I'm still interested in checking that out. However, AoC is a soid game and I can't wait to get off work to play some more!

    Like what????????????

I don't think you are playing the same game as me.

The game rocks, and rocks hard... if there are some glitches I really don't care - when you have the money and the resources to put out a quality mmo title, come back and post.

The games combat is a refreshing change from wow, lotro... and the countless copy cats.

The characters have nice aiblities that make the classes FUN to play.

The starting quest line is involving, interesting and fun.

Server and game performance for me has been 100% - smooth and no problems.

    Graphics are eyepopping amazing.

So tell me why is my game experience so different from yours?

AoC is the best fantasy mmo on the market right now.

Simple what you like doesn t mean everyone will like it also. I for example don t like the combat, found the story boring, don t like the classes much at all for various reasons, performance was decent not perfect, graphics are out of proportion to me , and i ll list AOC TO ME as in the top 6-7 MMOs. If you like it thats great but you and many others will tell people that don t they re wrong not sure why but you will. Everyone has different likes and dislikes.

I do not know about sales,   I came here to read where everyone went in Lord of the Rings Online.   Three hours today not one chat message,  I run to bree  the avg is 4-9 people (most times 40+ for these hours).

So now I see what everyone is talking about  (not really see ) , and the game does sound very interesting and all, but I can not access their official boards (will not buy the game until I see what type of support they have and actual game play issues).  Sorry vanguard caused that

Does anyone know why their boards are active account only to read?   That is what is stopping me from trying the game .

Anyways I wish them luck they sure got the day time people from the server I play on..

Not quite.  They are patching every other day to fix inane crap.  It's running like beta, where they would announce 2 hours of downtime and it would be 8 or 9, then you load up the game and they fixed a bunch of inane crap that nobody cares about.

Anyone have any numbers on Vanguard? Wasn't it around 250,000 at the start? Just wondering..
