So what do you all think, will EQ become a complete wasteland once EQ2 releases? I imagine there would be some that are diehards and stay with EQ cuz its what they know, comfort zone and all, but I would think many migrate to EQ2. ...
Its a mixed community, many hate EQ2 and Many are so hyped about it... but not many have stated that they will leave EQ1, especially the high end people since not many wish to start all over again.
Alot of people i know, buddies and people ive read on forums, will be migrating to EQ2. Thats people from EQ1, EQOA, SWG, FFXI, those are the game that come to mind atm.
EQ is where many current players of other games got their start, and got hooked. So Im sure alot will be coming to EQ2 just for the chance and hope to get hooked like they did on the original EQ.
So alot of games will lose their players Im sure initaly, then they will realise EQ2 isn't the promised Hype that it they thought (even though it will be a very good game) get immersied in the mechanics and numbers instead of the environment and then lose intrest in 4 months when there is nothing else to do!
Of course, I hope Im wrong and I get totaly sucked in and never want to leave!
I have news for ya, EQ1 is already a waste land, and this coming from someoen that still loves EQ1...
To answer your question... EQ1 will lose many players, and most likely most of the big guilds....some will stay and actually play daily but I think the majority of the people that keep accounts open with EQ1 will be just to mess around on when they are not on EQ2.... its always nice to go back and play an old school game sometimes.

Did YOU even play EQ? or if you did were you anywhere close to the high end game? Because it doesnt sound like it because EQ has more content then all the other MMO's I have played put together.

Agreed, I've been playing for a little over 4 years and still haven't made it everywhere, still having a blast with it. Have played most classes on it, decided my favorites and have built on them. If you run out of things to do on EQ, then you haven't really looked.
My personal reason for the shift is that quite frankly, since I left EQI, I've gotten spoiled on all these nifty graphics. I'm spoiled. If EQII is even 2/3rds of the original I will be content because I'm a fool for pretty graphics but not too much to the expense of gameplay. There's only so far I will go in that regard. But these second generation MMOs and their gorgeous pixels have too much luster. SWG lacked slightly in gameplay for me, only on a slight edge, but give me a world like EQ where everyone wields melee weapons or a nifty set of spells instead of laser guns and bazookas, throw in those pretty graphics and a decent bit of gameplay and a few comrades who actually WILL roleplay, and I'll be at least content.
I also suppose it doesn't much matter to Sony if they migrate over or not as they get the money either way. Interesting that EQ1 is already a wasteland. I could definitely see how the newbie areas would be desolate since it is my understanding what is left is just large guilds of high end players that hang around and go on raids and such.

Interesting, I watch my brother in law play EQ all the time and every server he is on is packed. I watch what people say and the interaction and some actually resent EQ2 and swear they will never play it. Most see it as a way for SOE to end the EQ series and force them to play the new EQ. My brother in laws says if they do that SOE will lose his account forever. Now these are just observations from one point of view mind you...but maybe you over exagerate a little...my POV of course.

Alot from EQ1 resent EQ2 because most have been playing 5 years and have uber character and now just like to show off. This same thing happed when AC2 was coming out and the AC crowd didn't want to leave there character. This also would have happened if UO2 came out(cancelled), UO fans would have great character and items they didn't want to give. The vets of EQ are so used to having the best and coolest stuff that they couldn't handle starting over with the common folks. Ever time there is a sequel for any game or the company threats a squeal, the reaction is the same(whinning about starting over) no matter how cool the sequel is. And SOE isn't the first one to make a squeal- turbine did it, OSI was going to do it. Turning out expansion after expansion is hardly saving anyones money, 2 expansions buy the new EQ2.

I was once one of those peeps. I had been playing eq1 since kunark expansion and was in the high end guild on my server and one of the best clerics equipment and spellwise up untill elementals planes.
Then something happened in my real life and i had to take a few months away from eq (ended up being 11 months).
WHen i came back i played my cleric one night and man i felt so lost as far as the 2 expansions LDON and Ykesha. So i decided to refresh myself they had opened a new server.
I went there and started a new toon. NOT A TWINK. A new toon from scratch. It reminded me SO MUCH of why i fell in love with the game the first time.
Anyhow i look forward to EQ2 and the new challenges and fun~
I think 4 months is a fairly accurate guess. Most people that will be playing EQ2 have played many other MMORPG's. However EQ1 was the first for at least a good percentage of community. That is what made it so fascinating. It will take something truly new and fantastic to entrance people again.
As for content, your right EQ1 does have more content then any other game I can think of, but that came with time. I started playing in 1999 (still have an active account actually) and it didn't have the content it has now. Content comes with time if the game is successful. We can only cross our fingers that are the goals of EQ2.
I am confident that EQ2 will be a very good game. However, I also believe many people will be very disappointed because they are expecting that same experience they got with EQ1.
Anyhow, my point really is to try not and get so excited over the game. If you set your expectations to high you are only setting yourself for disappointment.
Almost everyone I read here is in the High End guild and all...
90% of the funds SoE received was from casuals players that will not care to even surf the net!
The fact uber players goes to a game or not is irrelevant to most casuals.
I wonder if the ''lack'' of place for casuals would be shadowed by the graphics and flashies things, I doubt the casuals will be happy to have a ''lacking seat'' anymore...maybe I am wrong and the casuals are very nice persons. I see players stop leveling in old EQ at 51-56 and just do AAs, when casuals does that, aint that a very strong sign?
The fact I dont raid dont make me a casual and I cant speak for any of them althought. (althought like the casuals I have no nice place into the game only because I dont raid, *shrug*)

I think he was referring to EQII, guys.

no need to worrie if the population does drop then sony will probably combind some of the servers

That's a good point and make alot of sense...I guess what happens happens....can't make everyone happy.
