XBox 360... same servers... how will it change the game in 1/09?

BiggusRiggusBiggusRiggus Member UncommonPosts: 126

I understand that the Xbox 360 version of the game is to be released in 2009. I am wondering how it will change the face of the game if the Xboxer's will be playing on these servers? Just curious what people think.

If you think it is kiddy gankfest now...

I honestly don't expect them to mix PC servers with 360 servers so it will never be an issue.

    I hope you are correct!

personally i dont think AOC will every be on the 360,why? i'm not sure, that just what i feel :P

I'm not sure how well that would bode if they tried to mix 360 servers with the PC version servers. Kind of hard to make an exactly identical game for two completely different types of systems, which is what they would need to do if they plan on sharing both servers.

And depending on how they charge for the 360 version, can depend. If you only pay by subscribing to xbox live (which is like what, $50 a year?) then the population of this game, at least of 360 players, will increase dramatically, just for the fact that it is cheaper. If there's an additional charge then there isn't too much to worry about when it comes to attracting the 360 community... they'd rather stick to COD4 or Halo, while the type of good community per se might move to this game on the 360.

But even then, I doubt they would attempt to mix the two.

I have seen statements from the devs that they will not be on the same servers.

The 360-players would be utterly slaughtered. You just can't compete with a console controller against a mouse and keyboard in an MMO.

    Edit: And what about chat?

I have high amount of certainty that the 360 version will be canned, especially if their PC version sells well enough. I bet we hear of it within the next month.

Not to sound like a meanny Jerk...

but that is a really really stupid statement....

Our game is selling really well so lets cancel a different income source that will  bring us even more money!

the 360 version will make the game open to a whole new customer base. Only good things will come from it. Not only that what are all you PC players worried about. I thought PC>console PVP

what he's saying is that maybe the devs will realize it would be wiser in the long-run to use the money needed for the production of a console version (which I doubt will be anywhere near as popular as the PC version) and just use that money instead to further improve upon / market one of their games that already is showing sure-fire success. In the money-making sense it would prove more beneficial to use that money to improve upon the game that they have that is already successful, in the players sense and the marketting gain sense.

I can easily see production being cancelled as well... I believe they planned to release it just in case AoC's release didn't do too hot, but it seems likewise. Basically unneeded at this point. I'd rather they use that money to make the game more playable on older systems (maybe by upgrading the engine to give the option of lowering it's graphic abilities, if at all possible), then we would see some real potential.

If the conditions are right, then yes, it can only benefit, much like FFXI did for the 360.

If the game sells really well, then they'll have not only the money, but the sustained demand to bring it to a console. If it doesn't, they won't gain new subscribers by releasing it again elsewhere -- they'd probably spend too much time fixing the PC version, and wouldn't have the money to finance the resources needed to develop it.

Unlike FFXI though, AoC for a console is a logistical nightmare. All those combo buttons and spells... no way a controller can be used. There's a keyboard peripheral for the 360, but I don't remember anything about a mouse... and the interface would need a complete overhaul.

Thanks for clearing it up, you pretty much nailed what I was meaning. I think the 360 version was announced to initially offset what would have been much higher requirements relative to the time if AoC didn't undergo over a year of delays - but people's pcs have had a chance to catch up a bit. It would just make sense to continue to allocate those resources to an already popular PC version instead of shipping would-be-then older game to 360 which would more than likely be on its decline anyways (based on console/industry standards) and to release an MMO during the last years is not a very good business move.

The conditions were right for a release of FFXI on the console. Not only did it stimulate the 360 market in Japan but early on in the US for MMORPG fans. Further, FFXI had been around for years (with many having jumped ship already), and since it isn't as demanding technically to bring the game to the 360 as it would be for AoC, it worked. The sales never were that high, but the cost of developing the 360 version didn't matter (especially since they already had a console version with the PS2).

I think the cost would be too hight to continue development of a 360 version and wouldn't garner the sales or continued subscriptions to make it worth it in the long run - especially this late in the 360 lifespan.

I have to disagree.   They've been touting the 360 version from the start and have been developing it in conjunction with the PC development.   Each time I looked at the video blogs the control scheme pretty much screams gamepad  set up to me,  look at the combo system.  Select your special and then move in the correct order to activate?   Consoles have been doing that for years.   Since they have been working on it, what company would just throw away all the money spent already?  Stockholders would toss them out of a window if they did.  Unless you are the FC CEO your "high amount of certainty" means as much as a fly farting into the wind when it comes to them releasing for the 360.

PS... IF by some chance you ARE the CEO feel free to contact me, I'll work cheap

By the time Aoc is out on a xbot360.. they will need at least a 40gb hard drive to even install the damn thing.

I am 99% sure that the Console version of this game will NOT be cancelled. Unless the game is a fails horribly. The succsess of a game will not make it be released in less markets. only in more markets.  mind you funcom is an odd company so I wont rule out that 1% but I am sure there are some Contracts in place to prevent such a thing. Cancling a game is not done lightly. not only that the war between Consols and PC will be a blast to watch.....8 )

With MMORPGS on the Xbox 260, you pay the normal monthly fee, just as PC gamers do. You aren't required to have xbox live gold though.

Honestly, I'm waiting for the 360 version.  I don't have a good enough PC to play the PC version and don't plan on it.  Why?  Because the PC games coming out are, IMO, lame.  RPGs for the PC have taken a nose dive, of course (again) this is just in  my opinion.   Though I've still followed the launch because I'm interested in the game and love Robert E. Howard's work.

I started playing computer games back with Monkey Island 2 and such (not as early as some, admittedly,) and started playing "MMOs," or at least their equivalent with MUDs back in the early 90s, so don't give me that yadda yadda.

But I'm very tired of the way PCs have gotten so dramatically different in terms of hardware requirements.  Even a LucasArts dev said this during an interview about why they're not bringing "The Force Unleashed" to the PC, regardless of not whether that will be a good game is a moot point.

I love PC games, or at least older ones like Torment/Dues Ex/etc., but they're just not worth it these days.  They're mostly coded like junk except for the few AAA developers that really do a good job.  Unless you're willing to shell out a lot of money year after year, while 360/PS3 owners get an optimized version meant for one, and/or 2, standard system(s).

Like I said in a previous post, I don't even need a PC for gaming.  I can play Sacred 2, Divine Divinity 2, Gothic 4, and all similar previous PC only games on a 360, and "hopefully" much better coded and without the horrendous bugs that plague developers anything short of Blizzard/Maxis/etc.  Which is probably no doubt why developers are switching to consoles en masse.

I didn't agree for a while that PC gaming was dying, but I'm "tragically?" admitting it now to myself.  With the exception of MMOs they're failing bigtime, or at least that is my perception, so don't bother to quote statistics at me.

The only exception to the rule would be possibly with World of Darkness Online, that might get me willing to buy a nice new bada$$ PC, but other than that...meh.  Besides, that isn't until 2012 at the earliest.

Don't get me wrong though, it looks like AoC is doing quite well and having a, quite obviously, reasonably well done launch.  I just don't want to bother with it on PC atm.

If they can the 360 version, they're stupid, but again, just my opinion.

I wish it was different, truly I do, but unless William Gibson's Neuromancer world or Shadowrun-like Matrix pop up soon, it doesn't seem likely.

Remember, this is only my opinion.  ;)

    (I.e. it counts for nothing!)
