1-2 sec studders with good computer, upgrade what?

I have a Windows XP system with a Quad-core 2.4,4gigs of ram and a 8800GT. When usually get 50-130fps and in cities the fps never dip below 30. My connection is always around 100 so I doubt it's lag. Any idea on if I should upgrade the cpu? When I start out in new areas and start to run/walk I get 1-2sec studders like it's loading the content or something. Other then that the game runs perfect on High setting, I've tried to change the setting to med or even low but I still get the same little studders.

Have you tried forcing V-Sync off in the control panel for your video card? I was having a similar issue and by forcing the V-Sync off, I noticed what hitching I did have was gone the next time I joined in the game.

I think everyone stutters, I have a beast system with a quad core extreme, 4gb memory, and dual 8800GT cards.  I also have two 10k rpm raptor drives in a RAID array, - and I still get the stutter every once in a while.

This stutter is probably everything being swapped to memory or to your Cache file.  No amount of upgrading is going to get rid of it completely.  If you haven't already defragment your harddrive and that may help a little.

How much ram do you have? It just sounds like its storing to ram or something. Usually more can make it smooth out. I run 2gb and it runs pretty smooth sometimes it might stutter.

Hard drive specs? It's probably your HDD.

Well I would have to say it is your connection personally.  Don't get me wrong haveing a 100ms ping to a server is great if that ping is updated every second for you to view.  It is my experiance that the ping is taken at random times and then updated, an example of this is in WOW, I had many times when I played that game where it would pause then suddenly I would catch up to the game and my ping remained at a constant for the whole time.  But occasionally I would get this same type of problem and the ping would be updated rought the same time and show 700ms or higher but then 10-15 seconds after things normalized the ping would go back down to 90.

Remember your only as fast as your slowest connection, for you the slowest connection will be your ISP or the internet.

    Good luck.

Your using a q6600 2.4 cpu, these are the most highly overclockable quad cores on the market. Its definitly not your cpu, but you should know that you can push that cpu well over 3ghz with just air cooling. Greater than 3.6ghz would require watercooling. You should definitly look into overclocking.

True ... i have one myself .... yesterday i pushed it to 3.6Ghz by just upping the fsb and vcore voltage.

But from what i have seen, the studders are always accompanied by hdd activity ... even with my raptors in raid I have that issue.

Keep your disks defragged, and you could try completely disabling pagefile (windows will still use it though) ... with 4Gb ram you should be fine.

Well I was just running in town and was checking my lag and fps when the hitching would happen. In town i'm getting about 40-60 fps on high setting. Now when a "hitch" happens my fps drop to 8-15 then go back up to normal. So could this be my video card? I thought a 8800GT was pretty good for this game.

Also how would I go about overclocking my cpu to lets say 3.0 to be safe? Is there a link someone can post, as well as answer my last question about my video card :x

This guide is very complete on oc-ing your q6600 ... but honestly, cpu will not be your problem.

an 8800 gt is fine, im not sure why your getting hitches like this. I guess what the other guy said you could try defragging. I had a similar problem on a different mmo (potbs) and it turned out that the game loaded objects at certain spots, and whenever i went over these spots the fps would drop dramatically.

If you wanna try overclocking, than your going to want a improved  heatsink for your cpu. Which you can get at the shop for about 20-40$ look for a copper heatsink they are usually the best. Mine is called a thermaltake typhoon if u want to google it. Anyways all you do is go into your bios and raise the fsb in increments of 5-10 then check stabilitly using a program called occt. When you run into a problem raise the vcore settings by a little bit. look around google for a more detailed step by step guide, once you do it once its very easy.

Its a bug guys, give it some time its probably one of the most important issues they need to solve asap.

Most likely you start to stutter when client is compiling shader.cache.local .

When you defrag you can also use a program to move the file to the edge of the HD. It may not stop the stuttering, but it will load faster.

In all my years of PC gaming, defragging and different Windows optimizations has never helped a bit, but has given me many headaches
