ok well i just ordered a 512mb 8600 ---> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130290
i just wanted to know if this was a bad decision or not, since everyone seems to be talking about getting one of the 8800 series cards for good performance for a low price. any help is appreciated.
Comments
yes the 8800 tend to be better cards but dont underestimate 8600 i have 8600gts and i can run crysis on high settings with good fps graphics cards do play a part in performance but a lot of most current games are more prosesser or ram dependant. You should be fine with the card you linked but rearly all comes down to what you can affored.
8800 pisses all over the 8600 sorry to say..
well depends if its GT GTS or GTX etc etc but, 8800GTS+ will generally rape the 8600 series
The 8800GT is much faster that the 8600, for not much more money. I would cancel the 8600 order, and get an 8800. You won't be disappointed.
I've heard the same. That even the 7950 is faster than the 8600, and the 8800 is faster than both. I personally have a 8800 in my laptop.
.. But in a good way.
Out of curiosity what is your processor and how much RAM do you have?
"What is it that the gamers want from these games and why is it not given to them? We were playing these games ourselves, that's why we know it was not being done. So we moved in the opposite direction. We thought about what the users wanted, what we wanted, and why it wasn't happening and how it could happen." - Tasos Flambouras

Please note the diff in memory bandwidth and Texture fill rate. a geforce 8800 is about 50 percent faster than any 8600 equivalent if you get a half giga 8600.
8800 Ultra
8800 GTX
8800 GTS
320MB
8800 GTS 512MB3
8800 GT
8800 GS
8600 GTS
8600 GT
8500 GT
8400 GS
Don't let them get you down, I have a OC'd 8600GTS 512, and I can run it just fine with high settings. The difference between an OC 8600GTS and a standard 8800GT are minimal. Not to mention if you grab a BFG 8600GTS OC, you have a lifetime warranty on it.

Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.
Well my pc is old...which is why im upgrading it in steps.
pentium D 2.8ghz (x2)
2gig ram
and by 2moro 512mb geforce 8600gt
and on that list of vid cards there was no 512mb 8600gt? im pretty noob with tech stuff so i dont really know how much that memory helps.
Wherever you are in the world, the 8800GT is so cheap yet so good. Trust me. Best bang for the buck HANDS DOWN.
Don't pay more than 200 for one.
I have the 8600 GT card. Its crap. It performs no better than my old 6600 card. Get the 8800 GT card if its not too late. They are completely awesome, and very cheap.
Out of curiosity what is your processor and how much RAM do you have?
I have 3gb ram
amd athlon 64x duelcore 6000+ prosesser
Iv never had any trouble running latest games on it.I built my pc on very tight budget and happy with it
I have never overclocked my pc as never had the need to if i feel i ever need to overclock i know its time for upgrade my pc runs on custom made xp useing nlite so i dont have all crap that comes with xp.I wont upgrade to vista as its to buggy for my liking and tends to use more resorces than actualy needed
hope you have lots of money if you overclock your graphics card, because you will be buying a new one in less than a year after you fry the old one.
Not saying it can't be done, but you sure better have direct cooling on that graphics card, which pretty much none of you overclocker have.
The 8600 is not such a bad card, especially since you have 512 on it.
fyi to everybody.
the first number in the graphics card model is not the determining factor of performance.
in 8800 or 8600 the first '8' is how many features the card has. but the 600 or 800 is how well it performs.
thus, a 7950 would perform better than an 8600.

Yeah I'd agree not getting the 8600 GT, I would however suggest getting the 8600GTS OC version, in some areas it's better than the 8800GT, and in most other areas it's identical. Not to mention it's cheaper, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Yeah but those designations are very rarely accurate. A 7950 should theoretically be better than a 8800, but the 8800 blows it out of the water. Heck even the 7900 preforms better than it.

I don't know about the 8600, but I have an 8800GTS (evga - ssc version). And I love it, ran Crysis on high with no problems, and have been running Age of Conan fine with anti-aliasing.
ok well thanks to everyone for the info. seeing that its too late to cancel my order, ill just hafta see how it runs tomorrow.
If I were going to purchase the GeForce 9800, would I see a NOTICEABLE difference in performance over the 8800?
I'm so glad I managed to change it tp an 8800 GT Sonic the next day , now I'm getting a constant 60 fps in Conan ! Wooot.
Try and cancel the order and pay the litttle extra for an 8800 trust me you wont regret it !
Ps dont be fooled into getting a cheap 9600 either same problem I've been told .
8800 ....for sure

Compare and decide for your self ...
Would running 2x 8600gt be as good as an 8800gt?
I have 2 x 8600 GT and to get it playable (constant 60 fps) I have settings to medium, with no shadows. It still stutters and I have extreme FPS drops in crowded areas, etc...
The rest of my machine is no slouch either, brand new, C2D e6850 3.0 mhz, 4gb ram, 64 bit.
The 8600 pretty much sucks as far as im concerned, and I look forward to the day I am rid of them.

Be sure to mess around with the resolution, AA, AF, and other benchmark settings. Also don't forget to add the products you want to compare!
8600GT VS 8800GT = 8800GT beat 8600GT in 3 times more power.. 8600GT only have 32 Stream processor 8800GT have 112 Stream processors. That really matter
8600Gt is for games that make from yesterday, or some for today but with low setting. While 8800Gt can play all yesterday game and today's game with Medium to High setting..even future game like 1-2yr of course with low - medium setting)
I bought a 8600GT 256mb for $50(after rebate i got my $30rebate) czu the price is cheap and i only play CS:S.
Anyway i ordered a 8800GT on last night..
