do you like fast attacks or slow attacks?

do you like fast melee attacks like lineage2 / rohan / silkroad / ryl / scions of fate ect.... ?

or slow melee attacks like lord of the rings online / everquest2 / vanguard / requiem / shaiya ect.... ?

ps.in case people confuse... i am not talking about how long the mob will die after we attack it, i am talking about the speed of each time we swing our melee attack.

edit: oopz sorry age of conan does not belong in the slow attack category. pretend you dont see it in the poll. replace age of conan to everquest2 in your eyes.

I like the attack system in Asheron's Call.  It has a slider that you can adjust your attack speed. The higher the slider -- the more damage you do but slower your attack -- the lower the slider the faster your attack but less damage.

I like the feeling of fast attacks, but the slow ones are nicer to watch.

I like a realistic feeling in terms of combat, so I like slower attacks. Faster ones are just annoying for me to watch, especially in PvP - you can't keep track of things, nor is is realistic.

I liked the attack system in pre-cu SWG. As you advanced your attacks visually got got faster as well actual hit rate. If you started out ranged you would maybe pop off one shot every 5 seconds, as you advanced shots would fire off about once every second. The thing was it was in a burst, so visually what you saw was an almost continuous burst of fire. Same goes with Melee, you would start off with one hit every few seconds, then as you advanced it was a continuous roundhouse of Tera Kasa hits. You would see the numbers going off rapidly as the fly text scrolled.

For the most part animations were pretty smooth and realistic as long as you didn't move you av. Now the combat movements in SWG look really ridiculous and hits can't be targeted with a special like +left arm+,1000 +rightleg+ (which hits stamina pool) knockdown+ +dizzy+. Now you just throw a bunch of damage at whatever you are attacking till it's health bar goes down. And as long as you hold your cursor over the target, you're attacking. Sure you can still use specials, but all they do is make a little bigger hole in the damage output. There's no tactics to it at all other than holding your stinkin cursor over the target.

I love fast attacks:) 2 handed weapons annoy the crap outta me because they are so slow swinging:)

So, I always carry my 2 handers with me and use them in Fellowships so I don't look like an idiot .But ,when I'm alone- I use 2 one handers to my heart's content.

I prefer slow attacks; fast attacks look stupid to me. But very slow attacks can be frustrating, i.e. where your character spends most of combat not moving while the opponent hits three or four times during the period between your own attacks.

I like good looking attacks.  Usually attack animations are bad though so I end up liking fast attacks.  I think 9 dragons did 1 thing right.  Thier attack animations kicked ass.

    Blessings,

yeah realistic is nice but i dont call this realistic.. swing your sword... wait 3sec.... swing sword..... wait 3sec...... swing sword......  each attack it is noticible that your avatar is stand there doing nothing and 3,2sec past and swing his sword again its just like a robot is programed to do action every 3,2sec.  (looking at you lord of the rings)

if that is realistic... in reality no one would wait 3sec or 2sec to swing their attacks again each every 2,3 secs.

anyway I dont care much for realistic. I just want it to feel nice and good.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the time interval between melee attacks or the overall length of the battle.  If it's the former, I don't have much of an opinion on that.  Whether slow or fast, I don't pay too much attention to that.  But if you're talking about length of battle, I definitely like longer battles.  It feels more like a real fight to me as opposed to make a couple swings or cast a couple spells and someone drops.  The whole thing is over way too fast.

That is a problem with the animation, not the game mechanics; which in our case would be fast vs slow attacks speeds.

    Blessings,

More a problem with the code.  The best way to correct it is to scale the animation to the attack speed.  Many games do this.  Not sure why some titles don't, including some that are considered blockbuster.

i notice that american mmorpg have slow attack swing on their default normal attacks. like hit... wait 2sec... hit.  example LOTRingsOline, WorldOfWarcraft, WarHammerOnline, Vanguard and also NeverWinterNights2(non-mmo)

why wont they make it fast attacks like.. example Lineage2, Mabinogi, Archlord, 2Moons?

the only american mmo title i see that dont have slow attack is GuildWars. If GuildWars can do it.... why wont their others?

american's CityOfVillains is all good since their combat does not have default normal attack exist only skill icons. which we can ignore it from this discussion. also japanese's FinalFantasy11 can be ignore from this discussion as well.

these days asian mmo is copying american's slow attack swing speed. example.. Aion, RunesOfMagic, 4Story, Requiem.

I personally cant stand slow attack swing speed system. i dont have patient watching hit...wait....hit.....wait.....hit. just no patient. i want it hit hit hit hit hit hit. its more realistic and more good feeling and good to watch.

if anybody dont know what we talking about... see Lineage2/GuildWars then go see WoW/WAR combat for refference.

    i vote fast attack.

When it comes to auto attack I am not really a fan at all, too passive.  Especially if the game makes me rely on auto attack as a significant source of damage.

I like responsive attacks, meaning I press the button and my character attacks as soon as I press it,  with a short global cool down so I can use attacks in tangent quicker.

Combine this with an all purpose energy bar that is quick to deplete and quick to recharge and you can come closer to real fighting rhythm, quick bursts or single attacks, in rapid seccession and back off for a second and attack again, because too slow then it just gets dull and rather silly, and to much sustained combat, ie swinging over and over, never stopping, get rediculous as well.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

It depends on a few factors but really I htink I lean towards the slower attack....It kinda bothers me when I see someone wielding a sword that looks like it weighs 50 pounds and theyre swinging it violently like the tasmanian devil would.......

lineage2's two handed weapon feels alot heavier, realistic-er speed than WarHammerOnline's two handed weapon. WarHammerOnline two handed sword feels light, soft and robotic speed swing interval. hit.. wait 2sec.... hit..... wait 2sec.. hit...

lineage2's two handed weapon's swing speed is more realistic than WarHammerOnline's two handed weapon's swing speed.

I'm not sure how to answer...

My favorite combat systems are WoW and Vanguard... and to me they felt similarish... dont really know if the pace was the same.  I wouldnt consider Vanguard slow at any rate.

I know LOTRO's combat drives me nuts.. just doesnt feel "right" for some reason.... theres like a delay or something.  I have similar problems with many others.

I prefer fast attacks, as long as im not lagging off course.

My favotite combat system is Guildwars, it is different fron any other MMO.

But I really wish there was some more realistic systems, I bet no MMO dev ever used a real sword (Yes, I have). Even own a mastersmithed sharp blade (the tree inside the hilt is dated year 952, rst of the sword is new made by one of scandinavias best smiths). I like swords a lot

It will be intresting to see what Bethesda will cook up for the MMO genre.

It shouldn't feel tedious quite simply put. A problem in WAR is that my bow there got an attack speed of 4 seconds, where 3.5 seconds of these are spent holding the bow as if out of combat, and 0.5 seconds actually aiming. Not only is watching your character autoattacking a monster to death horribly boring, it's also quite illogical with such a slow speed when the major part of that time is spent doing nothing. All in all I'd say that rather fast attackspeed, but not necessarily more damage because of that.

you know exactly what im talking about. wow, eq2, lorto, war all attack once and do nothing and attack again and do nothing.

swing speed of guild wars and lineage 2 is realistic.
