What are your thoughts on housing?

Just curious to see what people's thoughts are on housing.

I, personally, wouldn't mind it but it is not neccessary.  If the game world is big enough, then sure, I would enjoy housing, but I do not really think of it as a neccessity.

What are your thoughts on housing?

I will raid and loot peoples houses until I have enough money for my Giant Fortress, from there, I will plan for game domination

Personally, I love it!  Any MMO that has housing will get my attention, atleast till it proves to be junk then I will move on.  I really liked how UO had housing orginally it was a lot of fun, but it soon covered all of the world and I wasn't a big fan of that.  I can do without housing though as long as the game is set up nicely.  I think WoW has a good set up that doesn't require housing due to the bank system.  Housing is nice in the fact that it really adds to the economy of the game, something that is far too many times ignored by developers.  A game with a good economy often translates into a successful MMO.

I also thought housing in SWG was done well, but of course that is another game that went to crap.  There really aren't any MMOs currently available with housing that are worth playing IMO.  I do hope one comes along soon though:)

Depends on the design of the game and how housing is handled.  In a leveled game, housing does not make as much sense except to provide extra storage for a player who is willing to travel back to the area they have already outleveled in order to access storage.  Instanced housing is also not that great.  Player cities in a skill based game can be great.  They help with the feeling that you are living in that world.  I loved player housing in pre-cu SWG.  Player cities had the possibility of providing everything one needed to develop their character.  Sure, many player cities were like ghost towns except for a few vendors but there were also very active player cities with people always running in and out making purchases, getting heals and buffs, running missions, getting training, crafting items, defending bases, and roleplaying (in roleplaying I'm including all player driven activities that were not needed to advance in the game.....parties, guild meetings with avatars all in same room, weddings, etc.).

Some people did not like player cities because they felt it spread people out to much but I always found people in the major server cities.  Others felt that it took away from PvP but I figure if people wanted to engage in PvP they would go to places where they knew PvP would occur (server cities especially those with lore faction alignment....Bestine and AH).  Plus, player cities meant players could place bases and protect those bases (want real PvP? engaging in guilds versus guilds battles over bases was a good way to do it, or is it that their definition of PvP was one shot killing a noob with TEF before the other player could even see a red dot? because that was the only "PvP" that was lost by the implementation of player cities).

I haven't seen housing done well except in Star Wars Galaxies where it was done OK, and The Sims Online.  Most make the mistake of not making you feel like the house is yours.  Its usually just a house you can stand in and... ask people to come over so they can stand in it too.  They just don't give purpose to the house.

Not a playing factor at all, but I wouldn't mind if it was implemented correctly.

I loved housing in SWG was the best ever in any game, no instancing just walk right in.

People were very creative as to how they decorated them, some used them for business, meeting rooms and all kinds of things.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

I would agree with this only in other games, in SWG we all had a purpose for our houses, well at least in my guild.

Especially our guild hall and city hall, we used to have huge meetings and was awsome to see 50 to 100 people show up, was great fun and allowed immursion into the game.

I like housing, although I prefer it when said housing is only done for groups or guilds.  Having a base of opperations that you can organize and customize however you like is generally a pretty cool feature.  Personally, I've always wanted to see this taken to the next level and, in a Sci-Fi MMO, have guilds be able to buy gigantic, upgradable Starships which would double as guild housing.

I love it in Ultima Onilne.

I hate it in every other game (and note, I never personally experienced it in SWG...so can't comment on that...but I've heard good things).

    UO did it right.

I agree.  If a game is going to have housing, they need to take that extra step.

For me a vast spectrum of housing is a necessity in the long run. In my VERY brief WOW intermezzo I always felt like a homeless, and this homeless meandering around always depressed in MMOs. I want cheap housing for starters and expensive for high end chars BOTH in a MMO. Ideally non instanced as it was in SWG.

Instanced housing like EQ2 and even more LOTRO is always the danger that no one will ever see it. The LOTRO housing seems like a special waste to me, the places look so beautiful, but all those places are ghost towns, so you need some function, as the SWG player cities had when there was still Combat Faitugue, so player NEEDED to go to an entertainer, which drew them into player cities. Also because of shops and events.
