just got a new computer, everytime i try and load AoC using the discs it gets to 05.rab or something and the system restarts, ive tried to download the early access thing to see if it works but it also restarts randomly...any idea why? ive got XP and my computer is easily able to run it

Run CHKDSK(go to My Computer, right click your main drive, go to properties, click on tools tab, click on Error Checking, enable all options and restart.
Then De-fragment your drive. Scan for spyware/viruses, get a registry cleaner and clean/de fragment your registry.
If worse comes to worse do a complete reinstall of WinXP and see what happens. You could also have a bad DVD and/or a hard drive/DVD ROM drive that is failing and causing the crashing.
You could also get a program called Alcohol 120%, create an image of the DVD, and then mount the image on a virtual drive and see if it installs then.
restarts are never a good thing since many parts in your computer can cause them so its really hard to track down the problem. Maybe if you could list your specs we will have a better idea.
... I'd start with something more simple like updating DirectX and your video drivers.
Don't run a reinstall of the OS, run a Repair installation from your disk. Install Microsoft Updates as well.
When the system comes back up does it ask to send an error report to Microsoft? I would do that, it might give some insight on the problem.
Does it Blue Screen before restart? Or Give you a blue screen with a countdown? If it has something to do with memory dumps you could increase your virtual memory and clean out the Dump Cache with CCleaner.

Id start with actually thinking... He is trying to install the game from the discs and crashing. This has nothing to do with DirectX or Video drivers... a repair installtion? lol yea that will get rid of viruses spyware and bad sectors on the HDD..do you work for Dell? He did say it was a NEW computer. I hope to god a new computer would come with the latest version of DirectX. anyways...
Only thing I can recommend that you said was to run Windows Update. Make sure you do a system backup if your going to update to Service Pack 3. I had horrible performance after installing it and had to reformat.
I had a problem like yours when I bought a pc that had WIN XP as the OS. If you didn't disable windows messenger prior to connecting your pc to the web you more than likely have a lot of spyware that is trying to run through the MSN messenger since the version you are using is not updated to the current security of the current version. Running a spyware and or antivirus program is what i would suggest. Or the simple and easiest is a complete reinstall.

Whatever you say bud, go ahead and have him lose his data, not your problem right. Repair installations will take out any modified files from any spyware or viruses, but it doesn't look to be a Virus problem -- as its only restarting, and theres not enough information. For all we know it could be something as simple as a DRIVER ISSUE.. .that could be cause by OLD VIDEO CARD DRIVERS. Don't tell me how to do my job kid, I've been doing it longer then you.
** Also, he can go ahead and check his error logs and see whether or not he has a bad Hard Drive, check for any disk errors.

i dont think the drivers are messed up at all, i just got it yesterday and its brand new...i updated all the drvies

Ok then if your blue screening as the game is installing...try to find another game on DVD that you can install. If it crashes with a different game you know its either a defective DVD drive and/or bad sectors on the Hard Drive. If it doesnt then it would be safe to say that Age of Conan DVD is corrupted.
So for now I would either try installing a different game that uses DVD's or try watching a DVD Movie and see if you get the restart. Also you may need an update Firmware for the DVD Drive you have. Dell wont always update drivers to the latest.
i think it has something to do with the DVD's...cuz on my old computer i had EA and was able to play with the EA i had downloaded without having to use to discs. So i tried to download the EA info from the site and that crashed at about 1%...I think it might be the game because im able to download WoW and i havent crahsed...yet

yep as the DvDs are in the drive and its loading it just turns off and reboots...im installing wow right now without any problems
Make sure your Virus Scanners are *all* disabled.
Just leave *only* the Firewall running.
As a backup check, try installing some other game from DVD, even if you don't intend to play it. If the DVD Drive is bad, it probably won't install either.

What exactly does the error say that you get before it restarts? On the blue screen it should give you some information especially at the bottom which tells of specific files or places where the fault occurred.
Also check your error logs for Errors on your DISK, or ATAPI errors will usually tell you if you have problems with your DVD-ROM drive.
Right click my computer go to manage. Check system logs Sort by error

Ok i would get Alcohol 120%(you can get for free with bittorrent) put the DVD in the drive, open it up, click on create image wizard, save the image of the dvd to your hard drive, then use the virtual drive feature in Alcohol to "mount" the image in the Virtual Drive and see if ti works..

Old video card drivers will not make a DVD installation restart the computer. Dont get defensive Daddy. its ok to be wrong when you think your right, happens to other people all the time. If you read my first step in the firs post I made I said to run CHKDSK which will scan for and repair errors on the HDD. Why have him look at the error logs for information he probably would not understand? GG Kiddo

all the screen says is like "1. Power Detect Auto Save" then it dies..all of the errors are from "Service control manage"
Depends, Never rule out the easy fix, you'd be surprised. PC's can run into faults on something as simple as a driver check, he doesn't have to be in the game.
It would also be pertinent to mark where on the installation it crashes at, if it happens at a specific time or on a specific file it might be helpful to troubleshoot.

It says something about Power Detect? You're using XP MCE? Do you set it to install and leave your PC for awhile and then come back?
Well these are the facts.
1)Brand New Dell XPS
2)He said he has updated all drivers
3)He is installing WoW with no problems
4)He is blue screeing when installing AoC
From this I gather that either the disk is bad, if he is installing wow from CD-ROMS it could be that the read/write funtction of the Drive when handling DVD's is corrupt.
Try watching a DVD movie and/or installing a different game that is on DVD's. If your WoW copy is on DVD and it works fine it is the AoC DVD. Easy as that.
If your thinking Power Save mode is killing the power to the drive while installing, thats not it, as long as the drive is actively processing data it will not take effect.
