i have The ATI 1100 radeon and it is updated to version 8.5 and i believe that my shader is set on 3.0 but i dont know where EXACTLY to check. everyone seems to say that it needs it to be 2.0 by using the catalyst control center for my driver. but there is no tab for shader. i need to know how to change this so that the login screen will even load up!! all i get is some black screen at the beggining and after a while some blue triangles and part of the login screen loads but hardly anything. If anyone can PLEASEEEE help me id really like to get this game working. thx!!!

Override Pixel/Vertex Shader Version: These two options allow you to set a Shader level lower than your current maximum supported shader version. This can be useful in some games which don't allow you to alter the shader level within the game itself, but adjust their graphics for different shader levels. For example, if you set a card which has 2.0 shader support to override this and force 1.1 shaders, it will run some games more quickly at the cost of some image quality loss. However note that certain games will not run on lower shaders - they require a particular level of shader as a minimum - or they will display visual glitches if forced to use lower level shaders. You may even be booted from some online games by using a lower shader level, as PunkBuster may detect this as a cheat. Note, you should also always tick the 'Optimize Pixel Shader Code' box for maximum shader performance regardless of the version you're using.
I dont know where exactly in the Catalyst CP it is, as I do not own an ATI card, but according to this, there is an option somewhere.
You can read this http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html
Basic vs. Advanced View: As covered above, determines what type of things are displayed in the CCC. You should be using Advanced view at all times.
in the catalyst control center for my driver under 3d the only options are:
1.standard setting
2.Anti-aliasing
3.antisoptric filtering
4.catalyst A.I.
5.Mipmap detail level
6.All settings
7.More settings
none of these say anything about shader in them.
Are you sure your in Advanced View and Not the Basic view?
OK I FOUND THIS! Download this utility ATI Tray Tools. It will allow you to change settings the standard CP wont. downloads.guru3d.com/download.php
i downloaded the whole thing and tried to run the tools and it was corrupted and blue screened me....twice. thx though. any other suggestions on how to change my shader to 2.0?
In the game settings (f10) there is a menu item for Video Settings, click that then tell it you want to use shader 2.0 there.
The problem is, I don't think it is going to run on that video card regardless of what you do. I'm running on a 1300 and I can tell you, it doesn't work at that well (7-12fps on a stripped down low setting), I can't see how the 1100 will do any better...
Therein lies part of the problem. I can't even fully load the log on screen. It will only load the foreground and background, and then they will periodically fade in and out of vision.

Did you get ATI Tray Tools? That is the only way I have found to be able to change the shader version. the standard Catalyst Control Panel wont let you. Its equal to ntune for Nvidia card users.(unlocks all the really advanced options for your card.
Yeah to me it looks like your video card can't handle AoC. I have a geforce 8800GT 512mb and I had to disable a few video settings to get consistant framerate of about 35-40 in cities and 60-70 outdoors.
There is an option to switch the shaders in the ingame video settings, you can get to it from the login screen... if you can load up there. If not I'd contact Funcom and see if they can help you out. Despite this being launch week when I had a problem I got an email reply less than 24 hours later.
ok, i downloaded the tray tools from guru and from softpedia and both times i fully installed and then i try to run tray tools and it blue screens... what should i do?
Well now that I look at the last update of Tray Tools was in 2007..I think its safe to say it doesnt support your video card...sorry. Ill try and find something else.
You need to manually edit the following file
C:Documents and Settings<user>Local SettingsApplication DataFuncomConanPrefsPrefs_2.xml
Find a line containing the string "RenderSetting_ShaderModel" and change the value to "0" (zero). This is what I had to do to get AoC working on my ATI X850, it might not work for you but it's worth a try at least.
ya i did that on mine and i created a custom folder and everything. but for some reason it made no difference at all. same exact thing happend.
Wait you said ATI 1100? are you on a laptop? isnt the ATI 1100 an onboard video card? i dont think your going to run AoC using onbaord video..or on a laptop for that matter.
i talked to a couple ppl when the beta was out and they were running on same setup as me. but now that i have retail i dont know how to change back to 2.0.
Ok before you click PLAY, click on options/settings and DISABLE FULLSCREEN. Let me know if that works. Also try changing your desktop resolution to something else than what you are using now.
i did both and neither worked. im pretty positive that i just need to change my shader only. but i simply just dont know how to access the option to lower it.
Try reading through the official Forums and posting your problem there. Try emailing Funcom support. Ill keep looking for a solution for you in the meantime.
Hello!
I noticed a LOAD of threads on this particular issue. It just hit me at work, and after 2 hours of google-fu, I bring to you the fix.
Step 1: You need to go to My Computer and (in Windows XP) click on Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Step 2: Go to C:Documents and Settings and open your user folder (your logon name). Go to Local Settings -> Application Data -> Funcom -> Conan -> Prefs. (Example: C:Documents and SettingsBobJonesApplication DataFuncomConanPrefs
Step 3: Open in notepad or some other text editor the file Prefs_2.XML. You can do this by right clicking the file, selecting "Open with", and then selecting notepad.
Step 4: You need to change the value of your render for shader models from 1 to 0. the string looks like this ->
Value name="RenderSetting_ShaderModel" value="0"
In note pad it is going to be hard to find, so hit CTRL + F and search for "ShaderModel" once you find it, change the 1 next to value to 0, hit save.
Then try launching the game...if this still falis..it pains me to say it..but try re-installing the game.
thank you so much Jessix. it worked!! the only thing is that im not getting great fps, but it is bearable. is there any suggestions that u have besides setting it to low resolution to get a better performance? ( please dont say its my system, its not the greatest but it is capable of better than what its at now)
First off go to the lowest resolution setting 1024x768. If that doesn't help much disable shadows and turn off bloom. Press F10 ingame to bring up the menu or at the login it's the button marked Settings.
If you still have crappy framerate, there is a setting in the umm video > advanced (I think) that has a slider bar for cache memory. Default is set to the left at 0mb. The tooltip talks about systems using shared memory but ignore that. Move that slider to the right and it will, I believe, set aside some of your physical ram to be used by the game, in addition to the vram your card uses. For me, most AoC has used is 800mb ram so with 2gigs I can spare more for the game. I put it far right and had a noticeable improvement in framerate.
