The De-evolution of MMO's

Everquest and UO:  You're in an amusement park without a map.  Go where you will and discover.

WOW:  You're in an amusement park with a map. 

Age of Conan:  You're in an amusement park with a tour guide who has the map.  You can only follow the tour guide in a linear fashion.

 

If you started with EQ or UO, this progression (or is it regression) is horrible.

If you started with WOW, you might like the superior eye candy of later games and be partially conditioned to follow some trail of bread crumbs.

If you started with AOC, you are in love because AOC is a big step up from Oblivion.

    early mmo's are better for one reason

     

    no instances taking you to your own area...

    I think AoC both in story arc quests and its combat system are the first up-swing back to nuanced games in a long time. It's not entirely un-WoW-fied, but it's good start to a long series of decent titles. Perhaps the others will keep the pace or quicken it like Aion, Spellborn, Earthrise, Stargate Worlds, Fallen Earth, and the like. All seem to want to offer something less based on "kill ten rats" and more on "here's a story for you to unlock if you should feel the fancy..."

    judging AoC on there tutorial lvl 1 to 20 is stupid, and to say instancing is a bad thing then why is it that vangard is not the most popular game ever? that game has little to no instances that i know of and its a massive massive open world...

    How is AoC a step up from oblivion??

    Oblivion is far superior to AoC is almost everyway, especially with size of areas and content oblivion kicks AoCs ass several times over.

    This thread is misleading -- it's just a shallow Age of Conan whine masked as something relevant.

    Some people need to learn that what you have to say is not important enough to warrant a new thread.

    If it wasn't a matter of comparing apples to oranges, I'd agree completely. (that's a knock against the OP, not you). Otherwise Oblivion would blow any of them out of the water. ;)
