The Griefers Prison

Found this post on the official forums, under the server I play on Cimmeria. Thought it would interest a few here who might not of seen it:

Here's an interview with one of Funcom's primary designers. He's describing the upcoming Griefer's Prison that didn't make it into release, but will arrive soon.

Essentially, players who repeatedly kill the same person within X amount of time will be dubbed criminals in the realm in which the crime occurred.

Players who kill anyone 5 levels or lower than themselves will be dubbed criminals in the realm in which the crime occurred.

Other infractions (and general asshattery) will also make you a wanted person.

You can then immediately leave the nation in which you committed the crime (Cimmeria, Aquilonia, Stygia), and so long as you NEVER RETURN, you're safe.

However, if you DO come back to the nation of the crime, bounty hunter NPCs will then be dispatched to hunt you relentlessly. When they find you, there are two options: 1) Pay a significant bribe to the bounty hunters, or 2) Go to PRISON.

Yep, prison.

Now, there's no time limit, etc. for this prison. No siree. You have to do absolutely menial quests over and over and over and over until you've "paid your debt". One of the quests, "Move That Rock Over There", is particularly hilarious. It's a multi-stage quest in which you--wait for it--move rocks back and forth over and over and over and over until you've "paid your debt" and get out of prison.

Also, prison is not some private place where your asshattery can be quietly expunged. It's PUBLIC. Everyone can come watch the griefing character carry out his / her menial work whenever they wish.

I fell in love with Funcom even more when I read these plans. The interview with Age of Conan designer Jason Stone is HERE (skip to 5:30 in the interview to get right to the "Griefer's Prison" part: http://www.g4tv.com/mmoreport/videos...n_Special.html

My hope is that this is either 1) The end of the murder guilds on Cimmeria, or 2) Forces murder guilds to change tactics drastically, essentially bringing them into the fold of other players who are here to play, not to disrupt.

With an actual consequence to disruptive griefing behavior, it's possible Funcom has taken a GIANT step in stemming MMO foolishness and getting the PVP server one step closer to what it should be: A dangerous place with consequences--even for those who choose to use the PVP server ruleset as an excuse to be asshats.

Well done, Funcom. Can't wait for this patch.

/salute

EDITED on May 24 to add the following, based upon thread comments so far:

Remember, even under the proposed Griefer's Prison policy, you can still attack whomever you want--you'll just get a dark mark on your record. It's not an artificial force field that prevents the attack--it instead introduces the complication of CONSEQUENCE to your actions.

I agree that a flat 5 level distance before some punishment is registered against you is likely too close. 5 levels is at least reasonably competitive at later stages of the game, I'm sure. My guess is that Mr. Stone was suggesting a ballpark figure, and that the actual level difference that would trigger a "black mark" on your record will be larger than only 5 levels. Perhaps a scaling level calculator for "ganking" purposes? Who knows, I'm only speculating at this point...

My hope is that the policy will be maximized to enhance the feel of a "real" world with consequences to murderous acts (because there ARE law and order consequences, even in the world of Conan the Barbarian), and minimize the ability of others to essentially "retro grief" by exploiting the Griefer's Prison ruleset in order to gain a truly artificial benefit.

Overall, I hope that the end result of the policy is that the murder guilds have to play smarter and pick their targets in order to wreak havok on our server, and that it truly protects those who would be victimized by PKers who currently have no reason to stop murdering PCs indiscriminately.

Consequence is a good thing, my friends. It will make this game a much more dynamic place to live for our virtual characters, and a more complex experience for we, the players.

    lol nice.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

Might start playing my pvp character again when this gets put in. Total unrestricted, no consequence ganking is pretty rediculous.

    Sounds pretty nice!

I do not agree with the bounty  /  jail solution, though maybe it'll work out.

What was wrong with Ultima Online's solution of both criminal for the short term and the murderer mark for the long term?

I'll believe it when I see it implemented, until then it is just a bunch of unfulfilled promises and I have watch far too many developers promise things and then never deliever on them.

Ah ha, now that part had me laugh out loud. That would be a real spectical to see.

Back to my plans on RP-PvP rather than PvE. Glad they will be doing something about the extremely unnecessary ganking... a little ganking in a game is good, but when it's at a point where it is now, there needs to be at least some regulation or forced chivalry.

    sounds interesting.

i would hope that you have a chance to fend off the bounty hunters, not just get chases unceasingly until you get tired of it.

maybe a GTA style pursuit, kill one bounty hunter, then a group somes, kill them, an elite comes, kill him, an elite riding a war mammtoh comes.

i like the idea in general, adds another layer to pvp.

I hope it is more sophisticated than this...it seems like I could get someone sent to prison by attacking someone who is five levels above me and letting them kill me when they fight back...
