I hope this game DOES release this year... (and some common sense advice)

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Seriously guys (and gals). I really hope that this game releases this year as they've supposedly promised somewhere on the forums at Darkfall.com.

And when it does, you all that are waiting on this game will see what trash this game really is. Blue Screens of Death. Insane Lag. Glitches. People walking thru the ground. People walking into the sky. Unresponsive, clutter style controls. Long server downtimes and only more problems when they open the servers back up.

This is the kindof stuff I predict when and IF this game ever does release.

Why?

Look, I hope that this game releases and proves me wrong. I really, really do. But I have to go with my experience and my gut instinct on this game. I remember back in 2002, 2003, and 2004 spending hours and hours and hours just drooling over the forums, promises and videos of 'Dark and Light'. Man, that game was gonna PWN hard. It looked sooo good, so different and truly looked to take the mmo genre in a new direction. Man was I let down after getting sooooo excited when I actually was one of the first settlers in the "settlers of Ganerath" pre-launch. I remember looking on ebay and seeing people paying $200+ for the rights to play in that pre-launch. I was tempted to sell my rights to play it too, but was too excited after following the game pretty close for like 2 or 3 years.

CRASH! Man were my hopes and dreams of a great mmo shattered before my eyes when the same predictions I made above for this game happened to me.

Look, I don't wish or hope for this game to fail. I'd honestly love to play a game that delivers even half of the features that it promises.

..My experience, my wisdom playing and testing well over 50 mmos and playing mmos since 1997 when I started with good old UO tell me that this game will not succeed. If it releases it will be a total joke... a nightmare. All the people who have been following and dreaming of playing this game for such a LONG time will be in for a HUGE disappointment.

..I hope that I am wrong.

Honestly, I hope all you fanboys are right.

Right now, a line from a great movie comes to mind however... From "Lonesome Dove", when Augustus (Played by Robert Duvall) said to a young woman so set of living in the City of San Francisco that she failed to see the beauty of everyday life...

Be careful not to put all your hopes into just one thing failing to see the great little everyday things... Because if you put too much hope into any one thing, you're bound to be DISAPPOINTED

That isn't word for word the quote from that movie, but you get the general idea. I hate to see so many of you good and respectful desiring mmo fans put too much faith and hope into a game like this. Why? It promises so much and has proven so little. It's chances of leaving HUGE disappointment roaring though your hearts is very high I would say.

If it comes out and surprises me, then yeh, I'll be there and be more then happy to say how wrong I was. I'd MUCH rather be insanely SHOCKED with surprise about how good Darkfall is then to be utterly CRUSHED if it does disappoint or fails. or never releases. Basically if my predictions are right.

Again, this is one situation that I'd much rather be wrong then right.

Darkfall has been in development for a VERY long time. I have a feeling that there are more fans dreaming of this days release then we might imagine. My best advice is to lower your expectations. Again, better to be surprised then to be let down by having your expectations too damn high.

In the end, it's just a game. But we also know how much these kinda games mean to some people. To some people a game that promises what Darkfall promises is more then a simple game. It's a HUGE hobby, a priority leisure, and a way to escape whatever turmoils everyday life brings.

In the end, all I am suggesting to the bigtime Darkfall fans is to lower your expectations of what this game will bring.. and maybe even WHEN it will release. Trust me when I say that this is only with good intentions.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Dont get me wrong. I appreciate your intentions, but you forgot one thing, the most part of the darkfall community are mmo veterans, and they saw a lot of games fail before. I as example, was in the shadowbane beta(failed), followed Dragon Empire(canceled), saw the downfall of DnL and Mourning, although i didnt follow both closely, they looked a lot like failures in the first place.

With other words we know exactly that a game from indy developers(and i said it often enough) fail more often than not. But i want to see and play darkfall, and i will see and play it, and then make my own decision. And look, you really believe that the Darkfall fans do nothing else? I do a lot of things beside of computer games, and play at the moment a lot of other games, to follow DF only costs around 10 min. every two weeks, so i really didnt waste a lot of time, and the only thing what will happen if darkfall will  fail is, that we have to wait for even more years for a game like that, which isnt the mainstream EQ clone every other mmo around is. Life goes on with or without DF or any other game, as you said, it is just a game and there are a gazillion games out there, just not a lot of good mmorpgs.

Beside that.. sometimes i think the trolls around here waste more time to troll or to warn(or whatever) than the common darkfall fan. But however.. the time has come that we all see what or what not darkfall is, it will release this year after all those years of development, and i am one of them, who think that a long development time is not always a bad thing.. soon ripe, soon rotten.

I was in Dragon empires testing...  You know what's funny though . or scary , whichever you wanna look at it..  DE was backed up by a major company with 10 x the experience DF has behind it and still failed because of f'ed up coding prbblems...

To DnL... it never looked better, it always looked like crap, and the developers like beginners, and even more their concept was inconsistent, and always when i was reading something from the DnL devs it was about their "awesome" world/terrain engine, but nothing about gameplay or gameconcept.

I guess it is nothing to say about Mourning at all.. it was never really worth to mention or to discuss, of course a lot of nice ideas, but not a well thought out concept, nor the ability to ever realize it.

To Dragon Empire, yes it was indeed a pity, i had high hopes for it. But about the experienced developers.. well they were not experienced in multiplayer games or mmos, or even client-server application at all, but i admit i have to wonder, that a good financed company couldnt solve those problems and/or hired a few experienced developers for this problem. But i guess their were a few other problems and/or reasons to cancel it.

And about DF. Well, about the features, beside the fpsish combat non of those features are any new, and are in different other games, they just packed it together. Are they able to pull it off? Well, of course they do not have experience in making a mmorpg, and in all honestly everyone was able to see it, especially in the public relation and marketing department.. but they have a lot of experienced programmer and designer in their team(a lot of insightful chats/interviews in the early days of development.. at least for ppl with a little epxerience in those topics), so i guess they are able to pull it of from a technically point of view.. but everyone knows that to make a game this isnt enough.. all the rest remains to be seen. And there will not be a guarantee for anything.. with that in mind, we have to wait until it release, and we can see and judge it.

Lol nice prediction.  I predict the sun will come back up tomorrow.  Seriously, this kind of stuff happens to every MMORPG at release.

It has not been a long time in dev because they planned for it.  It is a long time in dev because it is NOT going as planned.  See the difference?

Just go read the news section of the DFO forums, starting back in 2001.  They are clearly missing their own deadlines.  Whether it be bad planning or incompetant implementation - it is never good, but sometimes necessary.

What the hell are you on about, hes trying to give people some good advice here, you are completely missing the point. The hype on AoC was a bit higher then the resulting game, but its still a great game.

The AoC release is fine, I've installed it and have clocked about 22 hours in 3 days, 0 blue screens, 3 lag spikes lasting ~5seconds each(big woop), 1 glitch(for me), 2 Crashes(in 22+hours of gameplay). There is no critical errors in the game that frequently crash the game. The game works fine, its fun to play, the quests are fun, decapitating people is fun.

Then why do the Darkfall fanboys always bring it up and try to make it look like Darkfall is so much better?

A game that has nothin but a few crappy looking alpha videos clearly isn't better than anything that is already out , playable , purchasable and reviewable.

AOC is a very linear, instanced,  zoned. game. People in the darkfall forums aren't interested in a game like that at all.

Please don't get confused with sophisticated and complex, as against decent sensible programming. all the features have been done before what is key here is the integration and design. If the code is working and thats what is important the rest is not that difficult....

If the code is not working then it is the end. They profess they have donethe hard bit I guess we will se by the end of the year.
