FUNCOM:FUNCOM NEWS

Funcom would like to provide a short update of the

status of the launch of the Age of Conan game.

Status of the launch

The Age of Conan game now has over 400.000 active

players (players who have registered their

purchased game key in the Company's registration

and billing system). The Company underlines that

there is uncertainty regarding the future

development of this number. Amongst many factors,

it will depend on the continued early sales

success, on reviews from major gaming press in the

most important markets as well as the long term

appeal of the game play that determines the

longevity of the average subscription.

Funcom will not report subscriber numbers on a

regular basis, for marketing reasons, but will

provide additional financial guidance before the

Second Quarter 2008 reporting.

For further risk evaluation, see 'Funcom Risk

Overview' at www.funcom.com under Investor

Relations and previous communication from the

Company.

400k is quite good and 800k would just have been a overkill (funcom themself were only planning for 400-700k), number will grow a bit in the next days, but will probably go down a bit too after first month the only question will be if the number of newcomers would exceed the number of quitters after first month

I think the important phrase there is 'long term appeal' and it is here that AoC falls down.  The game is pretty decent 1st time through, 2nd time a bit of a chore doing all the same stuff to level an alt, 3rd time? forget it.

lol...if that was true they would have to be adding 8 servers a day...during 10 days...if one server can stand 5k players...

aoc will no grow much bigger then now..and will decline really soon...you get one char to 80 and you done all..seen all the world...proffessions arent deep enough...this game is small, instanced, with loadings, super linear and has less content then one of those free korean mmos...dont expect people to continue playing longer then 2 months....

many people are indeed still waiting fore their game boxes from gameshops on the net.

The reason is because after the grand miracle patch (1gib+?) Funcom decided to pretty much stop the productiong of the launched DVD, and were making the new ones with the fix included, so i've read on my own site i was going to buy from but had to cancel and go down to a local shop instead, who had a few ones left.

So expect a lot more registrations around the end of this month, till the beginning of the next.

Might reach 800k by then, lol.... hopefully they'll have plenty of new servers active by then.   O.o

that's worse than LoTRO's launch. They peaked at around 1 million subs in the first few months...and then went plummeting down...

lotro 1 mill subs? link plz? they had 200k max, which actually was very good since almost no mmo can get over 100k since WoW pretty much dominates the whole market

    but the 200k lotro - http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart2.html

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

can't vouch for it, but it had been discussed extensively at the european and american LotRO fora; I don't remember the links though...

launch population does not mean much for mmo lifecycle. wow did not have millions at launch too, it depends a lot more on how many people that buy boxes stay as subscribers.

btw i highly doubt that lotro ever was close to 1 million subs, that was just people reading some numbers wrong that counted it that high.

population after half a year is a much better indicator, if  most people stay after initial 30 days and you manage to get more and more people to buy the game then you get a successfull mmo. selling 1 million games and 90% of them leaving after first month won't help the longtime succcess of a game (but the company will be happy to get their dev costs back).

that's exactly the point I'm trying to make, you can have a high number of initial sales + the free-month subscription and after a period of time you can go plummeting down.

And LotRO sure did plummet after launch.

When PvE raiding and guild Keep raiding(PvP) become relative commonplace on the realms I believe that the numbers will go up. Right now people on the fence in buying this game are sitting here looking at some mostly stupid uneducated comments about a game that's been out a whole 6 days.

A vast majority of players are still in their 30-40s with another 40-50 levels to go before they're even at the level cap plus various non-raid instances to clear.
