Do voice actors deserve to make as much money as movie stars?

ZindaihasZindaihas Member UncommonPosts: 3,662

With the increasing popularity of video games at the expense of movies, voice actors who lend their voices to the development of these games are increasingly demanding more money for their work, even though their faces are never seen.  Here's the latest example:

The voice of Grand Theft Auto's (part IV) main character was paid $100,000 for 15 months of work.  He feels he should have made millions based on how much money the game has grossed?  Should he get it or is he being greedy?

tbh i dont think they should be paid as much as movie stars, but they should definetly get some type of royalty if they are the main character's voiceover.

When walking down the street, does he get mobbed by people saying "Look!! It's the GTA IV guy!!"? Don't think so. He's another face in the crowd and had his 5 seconds of fame. He made plenty for what he did.

voice actors aren't equvilent to movie actors, those would be the designers.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

i think he is greedy, 100,000 for 15month it not alot for an actor/actress but come on you ddint show your face. Plus this can be done by anyone that qualify as voice actor. I know the game is popular but it doesn't all by his voice, it is all because the game design, programing team, developer.graphic, involve so many ppl. etc..

He can refuse for the next GTA or ask for increase the pay...

Next GTA will probably not use the same character.

I think they should get paid more, but I don't think it's right for the GTA guy to get millions. Maybe half a million?

I think movie stars should be paid less. Who is more valuable to society, a nuclear physicist, a microbiologist, or a movie star?

Who has the ability to make the greatest impact to our lives, the research scientist that discovers the cure for cancer, or the movie star?

What makes Sharon Stone more important then the developer of penecilin?

And voice actors in movies dont get paid squat unless it becomes a sequal.

Eddie Murphy and others on Shrek got 25,000 US dollars on Shrek for voice acting. It took them 10 days and they were done.

In Shrek 2 and others that got an average of 2 million a piece.

Same went for Ice Age. They received 10,000 US Dollars. Ice Age 2, it went up to millions.

Voice actors don't get paid much unless a sequal is made.  The guy in GTA 4 wasnt in other GTA so he should be lucky he got paid at all. A video game voice actor can be found anywhere.

I'll pay 8 bucks to see Harrison Ford run around finding things because its entertaining. People would spend that much to see them.  I have to pay a nuclear physicist about 500 bucks to hear him speak for about 12 weeks in the form of a semester....and he's a lot less entertaining.

The Research scientist obviously....and guess what......you dont think he'll (or she'll) become a millionaire and get publicity for finding the cure for cancer? Come on lol

Only thing Sharon Stone can give away is Hepatitus

Voice actors don't make or break a game.  In games they are still unneeded.  Without the Designers, Artists, and Programmers.  The game would just be 20 hours of this guy talking on a blank screen.  Without a Sound Technician it would also be a bad sound.

I agree with an above poster on this matter: It's actors that should get paid less. Acting is a job that love of people want to do and there's no shortage of people wanting to get into it.

I can enjoy a movie full of faces I don't know. Seeing Harrison Ford (in a non-sequel role) doesn't change that.

And it's not totally impossible to recast actors for a sequel. Consider all of the different Batman and Superman movies.

I'd rather that they decrease the cost of games, make me read subtitles, and do away with voice actors

I think a lot of these people make far more then they are worth.  A lot of people make far too much money that should be going elsewhere.  I am no socialist in that wealth should be equally distributed but when you make that much money it's ridiculous.  You don't care about fuel prices soaring because you can afford whatever it costs.  Therefore you build mansions that sit empty 11 months a year yet are still using energy to keep it heated/cooled/etc.  Imagine if all those empty spaces were gone and weren't pissing away energy.  These idiotd can run around and say they are green by buying carbon credits or whatever but they are fools.  They are not Green.  Anyways neither of them deserve to make what they make.

"Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves." ~ Ronald Reagan

  • Voice-acting, while important and worthwhile, is also generally alot easier than screen-acting. You sit in a studio and deliver your lines repeatedly until it's satisfactory, you go home and get your check. There's a reason why the biggest voice actors out there have done a metric ton of work, because they can.

Until and unless the demand for quality voice talent hits extremes, they won't be paid more than they are. Whatever the reason and however justified it is, a voice today is not worth as much as a voice, face, and body.

I would love to make $100,000 for 15 months of easy work.
