Best processors right now are the Core 2 Extreme Quads. But they cost in the $900. Best bang for your buck is AMD with a 780g. AMD really stepped up its low end game with its platform.
Intel Extreme QX9750. USD 1,480 or something close to that. Not worth the money in my opinion because you can overclock something like the 6600 to close to the levels of the QX9750 with a little investment (but not 1400 bucks) in some aftermarket cooling equipment.
