Ok - I'm working fine now and here is my theory based on what I've read in this thread.
I completely removed all traces of the program.
-Uninstall
-Reboot
-Find your Funcom folder in program files, delete it.
-Find your Funcom (for vista c:users(your usernam)appdatalocalfuncom, delete it.
Install game again.
Should run fine now, did for me.
My idea about what is happening: The new patch for some of us is corrupting our profiles. This would explain why some users had luck running the application from a different windows user profile.
There may or may not be a seperate issue relating to the bink codec. The solution for this (for some people) is earlier in this thread.
I appreciate your efforts Gold but trust me I have devoted many hours and a lot of frustration to this problem. I think the only thing I have not tried is formatting hard drive completly.
one way you could test if it is the profile issue would be to simply create a new user on your OS and then try to run it from it. It should build the new profile for the new user and if it works then you would know it was your profile that was messed up.
BTW, the profile is NOT removed when you uninstall as I still had profile stuff when I installed the full game from beta!

tried that last night and again this after noon Raston. Like I said I did not come to the decision of canceling lightly. I put a lot of effort into getting the game to run, more because of pure pigheadedness than love for the game but still..

well let your pigheadedness let you delete the O/S from a Formated hard-drive. then after that if it doesnt work. your SOL i think
I canceled my subscription today- reason no support or communication I don't really expect anyone to care that I canceled but made this post just to let people whoi have not bought yet , do so with a bit of caution. If you have any issues with the game running do not expect Funcom to be of any help. There is a reason they will not let you read their forums until you buy the game so buyer beware. The patch 2 days ago broke the game for me. not just for me, for a lot of people. We have begged for a indication that Funcom was aware of the problem on the tech forums and were ignored. There are a least a dozen threads started by people with the same problem, some of the threads over ten pages long. Not once has a Funcom moderator or tech person replied to any of the threads. I submitted a email ticket to tech support over 48 hours ago and have recieved nothing but a auto reply. If they fix the game to where it will launch for me or if Funcom decides to instigate some communication on the problem I may reconsider and resubscribe.
I find it indeed VERY suspicious that you cant even READ their foum unless you have bought the game. Speaks volumns IMO.

I've said a few times that if you expect a "different" FunCom than the nasty, who-gives-a-damn attitude that they have in AO, you're in for a big surprise.
That they don't have the staff, or the numbers, to answer customer service-related issues isn't ours, mine, our your problem. It's their ever-continuing lack of foresight and planning once again rearing it's head.
That that head is firmly planted in their posteriors, well...

that's cool, just trying to offer ideas. I know if it were me, I'd be pulling my hair out too.
Of course then, it is a shock I can even play it with my antique of a computer
probably instead of replying to a great many individual posts they are working on fixing the patch. it might be a mistake to be so impulsive.

having a moderator on the tech forums would be even more impulsive
keeping the customer informed would be really radical
repsponding to tech tickets within 3 days would be just frigging insane don't ya think?
oh and I am not going to formnat my HD over this, I have EQII and LOTRO and may even give WoW a try since I never really played it.
Heck I hear that Vanguard may have even improved some... nah formatting my drive would be preferable to that
