Hello there,
Firstly i am a HUGE Star wars fan (Part of the reason i have to remain anonymous ...)
I have played ALL of the official lucasarts star wars games, And have been saving SWG for last... Although i see it has gone through some VERY bad patches i hear it's this CU and NGE, Anyway, i would like to know if it would be too late for me to start playing this game..
Would i be too late into it all to progress ? i am so confused as to wether i would like to play because i hear that soe may be shutting down swg (i know, dont feed the trolls) on the rumors board, i know they are rumors but i dont want to invest my time and money only to find the game shutting down..
I hear there is also a very good space system, which interests me a great amount... are there many people still even playing this game? if so what would be the best choice of servers?
Is there any alternative mirrors for the trial (4 gig at 25kb/s is a long time), and how can i make a trial account?
Is the PvP dominated by all the "uber" older players ? Is there any room for teaming in both pvp and pve?
How long would it take for me to level up to the top level and get high end equipment?
Also - i love to have all of the "Special" items and "Collectors" Items, will it ever be possible for me to get the elder jedi robes? or any of the anniversary rewards?
Sorry about all of the questions - I just want to know if this is the game for me.
And please do not fill this thread with "OMFgzzzz nge suxx0rz pre cu rox1337 s0 7h15 ga3m na0!11 one suxx0rz.)
Many thanks,

SWG PVP
------------------
1. Make sure to have two full rows or more of Buffs, you can guarantee everyone else will.
2. Double Check Buffs.
3. Triple Check Buffs.
4. Engage in pissing content at the Restuss SP, while awaiting a single enemy player to cross the line so that the fourty players lying in wait can kill that one, lone straggler (faction makes no diff here).
5. Run around Restuss hoping for a few decent fights, more than likely get zerged if you lack proper companions, or are not a Spy.
6. Go pvp till you die and get to go renew ALL your buffs again, rinse and repeat over and over.
All for some points and rank, in a game that grows more desheveled every minute, and looks to have a maximum of another few years before it is shut down permanently.
I would pass, were I you.
Honestly, don't bother. The game hasn't been playable for three years. Right now PvP consists of spending an hour getting as many buffs as you can and then milling around Restuss waiting for something to happen. Most of the people grinding officer are killing their own alts in their houses.
don't bother
Your best choice for servers would be Bria, Bloodfin, Chilastra or Starsider. If space is your main attraction, I'd suggest Starsider as it has a very active Pilot community with space events happening throughout the week every week.
Shortest reply ever made by me : Yes, it's too late to play SWG.
-----------------------------
Playing : Nothing
Waiting for : Starwars old republic
Played : UO, WAR, Eve Online, SWG, GW, WoW, CoH/CoV, Rose Online, Lineage II, EQ II.
Really I wouldnt bother starting in this game once the new Star Wars MMO is released its been said that SWG will be shut down anyway .... about 1 1/2 from now.... at the most..
Reasons not to start playing......
1. Server Populations : Out of the 25 servers,,, only 3 really have a significant population and during the recent vet trial I created test toons for each server to see how populated all the ones I never played on before... stayed about 2 hours scouting each planet's major activity areas and this was at peak playing times from 6pm - 10 pm at various times and most came to the same conclusion empty and devoid of life, only one server only really had any type of population was Bloodfin ... I even talked to some people on Bloodfin and the word was that a lot of people left SWG for AOC (Age Of Conan for those who dont know what the abbrev is..)
Even on my old server Eclipse a entire guild of 80 up and left SWG for AOC and several others all you have to do is look in the SWG forums and see the evidence there about populations and daily threads about server merging...
2. Economy- Completely Broken or Destroyed- With the NGE brought many other problems ''The Target Audience that actually came and played the game'' along that came the credit sellers and the kiddies that used mommy & daddy's credit cards to buy their credits so they could have all the uber gear cause the mindset of any new player ive ever seen was I WANT IT NOW !! CAN YOU GIVE IT TO ME .... and this was the other day... noone wants to work for anything in game so people buy the credits jack up prices and at the expense of the players that dont buy there credits have a hard time getting anywhere in game.. even with a guild... Greed has completely taken over this game between the scraps of players left in the game...
3. Community- It was as I left it in Dec of 2007 when I came back for the Vet Trial... Rude, Hostile toward any negativity about the game and the persons saying it, elitist scumbags , and kiddies that need to go back to thier XBOX and stay there... Ive never met a community that was more abrasive than any other game if you want proof what type of community SWG has go to their forums plenty of bitter arguments and lots of hate.... pretty much most say if you dont like the game leave ....we wont miss you or care...??? the problem is that if you dont care what about one day when there is noone left playing the game as it is right now cause you didnt care...????? you should care...... no peeps ... no SWG.... its been rumored that the populations is less than 8k well atm it is inflated right now cause all the vet trials are active counting them as subs whether people used them or not.... the Smedster's little trick that wont save him and keep him in a job too much longer....
4.Game Itself...- How do you go from being a game with potential then decide one day hey lets gut, and destroy this ... we're not making enough money... we need a different target audience..... we want big numbers we want WOW........and that is the route they took .. alienating over 250k players most of whom quit when the NGE was brought on TC then to live..... How do you go form a massively diverse game of 32 professions and a locked character that was Jedi to 9 Wowconic Professions including starter Jedi ( which now dominate the game population for the timeline which there should be very few to none ) erasing efforts of all the progress made in the Pre-Cu and CU eras to be made super gay so even the feeble and console kiddies can be Jedi too?
There hasnt been a real box expansion in 3 yrs now all thats left for content being made now is WOWeroic Instances and Borefastic Collections which they secretly nerfed the drop rates 3 weeks after Chapter 7 was released.. There are people still grinding the Holo Collections from November still while there are people with just luck or some kind of jacked up loot table can get all of them in a week..all the real cool collections stuff if you want it be prepared to kill the same NPC's over and over again for months ... The Woweroic Instance (Heroic) are nothing but raid type WOW instances that drop super uber rare loot there as well but then if you have a group everyone is deciding who gets what before the instance begins.. (the mentality of this game has become Ill help you but what can you do for me ??? or give me???) As of right now there are 5 WOWeroics each one you complete you get a token you have to do all the instances several time to build of the tokens and buy Uber Jewelry sets geared toward the template of your toon (which will be nerfed about 3-6 months down the road....) once you get the jewelry sets there is no reason to do the instances again really.....
But I could go on and on about reason why not to play the game.... but I'll tell you to try the trial instead just dont pay them a dime till you decide it's really what you want to pay for monthly....... believe me I love Star Wars got all kinds of collectibles, video games, toys, music but this is the one thing here that will sour you experience of it all ....
We've all heard this same line for years now.
Anyway, to the OP: not only is this game awesome, it's by far the most complex and open-ended MMO in existence.
Join the fun.
And may the Force be with you!
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.
Fixed.
I played this game before and after and enjoyed it.
SOE really stuffed up my billing which lead me to stop playing for a while and then I just didn't go back for some reason, I think I got into something else.
I don't think it's too late to start and if you decide to play I hope you enjoy it.
If you are a big Star Wars fan I would say give it a shot. There are still some good aspects to the game.
Not sure how much of a future the game has though because the developers don't seem to be willing to do what is needed to save the game, namely merging servers. At this point, there should probably be no more than a few SWG servers total.
I'll probably give it another shot if they open up a precu server.....hehehe...sorry couldn't resist. I know, I know, never happen.
As the trial is about to finish downloading i will try it out, If it can keep me entertained then i will sub...
Although one thing worries me - They released a digital download and added another item, and i see they have done that quite a few times - It seems to me they are trying to get as much money as possible by adding these things, i am not trying to make it sound bad or anything but thats what companies do when they KNOW the product is going down the drain, they try and get as much money through things as possible.
i may be wrong and this may be a great game.
I haven't played SWG in around 6 months so I am not up to date but I played PreCU, hobbled through some of the CU, then deleted everything at NGE and left. After a little over a year, I went back and started new. Within 3 months I had a capped Jedi, all the trade proffs capped and was working on a BH. It was very easy to jump in new because anything that was heritage was destroyed with the NGE. There was no Vet glory or advantage for being there from day 1. Yea, there was Vet buffs that didn't mean a damn thing. If you never played that PreCU then you won't have my problem. I just couldn't shake that feeling of disconnection from a game I once played.
In terms of jumping in, go for it. It is very noob friendly. Will you like it? One word. Trial. You are going to know in that short time if you can get enough enjoyment out of it to pay for it. I don't know how many MMO's you have played either but remap your keys so you can run on the right mouse key, fight with the left. Taht was original SWG keymapping and easily the best for those worlds. Once you are done the Legacy quests, find a faction base, either on Rori or Lok and do missions to level 60. There aren't going to be any quests for those 20 levels and this allows you a chance to get some of the essential faction for PvP.
I can't extend the map experience I have. It took years to know every spot to go and every corner to check. The problem you will have there is alot of that content has no function now and you will get confused. You might want to do it anyway, just don't always expect it to make sense. Try the RE system for sure. It was actually pretty fun. It was painfull to see it get reduced to cap in such a short time but that was the product of an over cap and bugged release early that made everything you make now not as good as stuff that flood the worlds.
I will shut up now. I am on a memory lane. Give it a try. It isn't as good as PreCU. Don't let anyone tell you different. It's still not a bad little game though.
You will face one daunting challenge, money.
The economy in SWG is massively inflated. Players running around with 1 billion credits is common now. 3 years ago when I last played intensely 50 million credits was a lot of money.
About 4 months ago I went back to SWG for a peek. I had to transfer my toon from eclipse to bria because the population was so low. I lost all of my resources in the process. I had to go about replacing years worth of resources plus harvesters for mining.
Anyway, I spent 50+ million credits which was everything I had saved for 2.5 years of playing and it wasnt nearly enough to get the basics. I couldnt craft half the items to start another droid shop. I couldnt afford to buy anymore resources because the prices were absolutely insane.
If your starting in combat, you'll be okay at first. The quests give you the basic needs like a landspeeder and a weapon. Buying anything decent for combat like +35 stat clothing requires millions and millions of credits.
You'll never be able to compete and buy really rare drops like collector items.
To summarize...
crafting is out. You'll never be able to buy the best resources. It will take years for you to harvest everything you need. crafting bonus clothing costs millions
combat is possible but you will never be able to afford the best gear like pearls and stat +35 clothing. Forget about PvP, you wont stand a chance.
Decorating your house with decent rare items is impossible. The vet reward items which are great for decorating costs millions and millions. You could easily spend 100 million and not fill up one room.
Populations are very low so its hard to get groups for the best drops when you reach end-game.
Overall its really tough to get into any MMO this late in the game.
PreCU I was a Swordy/ Ranger so when I came back I stacked hides using a harvester droid and the credits rolled in. Nobody does those things any more so if you have no problem with farming hides, get the requis for faction armor and go to work. Don't hesitate to charge accordingly and watch the cash flow.
the SWG pops are decent.. xcept they have soo many servers u have about 6 servers with a nice pop and the other 20 or so are deserted.. still 6 servers with a decent pop aint bad, if u havent played it before u can try it.. i know all the vets wont touch it ever again (for good reasons)
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
I would kinda like to see them do what PoTBS did with a server merge. I guess it has something to do with all of the housing issues....

yes and they merged 2 planetside servers not long ago.. i dont know if they merged the vanguard servers after the launch too (i guess so)

If you didn't play pre-cu or cu, the nge won't be too bad for you. I think what puts many people off is the fact one day you options for 32 profs were taken away and you were stuck with a very linear 9 (i may be incorrect)
well at least that's what got me.
Ok, thank you all for your input, I'm currently waiting for the game to finish patching - I have one question for you all though - If i wanted to bring a friend along, what would be the best class combination?
Thanks.
if your going to really play a profession go for anything sides Jedi or Bounty Hunter they are a dime a dozen and are everywhere.. Spy is fun and requires skill to play and Commando is fun or Medic just putting that out there .... and the credit problems I have spoken of and some other posters is real you will really have a hard time getting what you really need unless you buy credits which is illegal by the way..... there are ways to make credits quick but..... the cost of everything is way too much due to credit farmers and greedy traders......who have too many credits to even handle .........let alone spend....
The items they give as bonuses have equivilents in the game as well, so it's not like you're missing out on anything if you choose not to buy the packs. Some of those items are also tradeable, so you can buy them off others that have bought the packs.
and to that other dude saying you can't make money: LOL
what kind of crafter BUYS resources?

Yeah because server best resources for all professions spawn every day, amirite?
"Greedy crafters" have always been pikers, in number and rapaciousness, compared to greedy combateers.
Regardless of my personal feelings about SWG I find it difficult to join a game that's been live for some time - especially 5 years.
I feel as though I'm joining someone else's game. I much prefer to be apart of a community from the beginning and help shape it then joing one already in progress.
