Video Card Question..

Ok, so I'm currently running the game on lowest settings possible between 20-50 FPS with drops down to ten and jumps to 65. My current specs are an:

AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core 3.21ghz, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, and a GeForce 7600 GS 512mb Video Card.

I was told that my video card is what's holding me back, so I found a decently priced card that I'm thinking about picking up today, which happens to be a XFX- GeForce 8600GT 1GB DDR2.

My question is would this bump me up to at least medium with a frame rate between 30-60?

I suggest holding out, Nvidia is releasing new cards in June, and that means price drops on older cards. If I were you I'd pick up a 8800GT(X) after the price drop.

When you will build this suggested rig, yours will match mine. And i have a steady 50-60 fps.

Thanks for the tip but this card is on sale so that's why i'm getting it. Maybe with the price drop I'll look into SLI in a few months.

The thing is, the 8600 is a wasted investment. Sure, the 8800 is a tad more expensive, about $60 more or so. But 2 8600 in SLI doesn't out perform it by that much, so you're really spending about the same amount of money for performance really. If you get a 8800, you're spending a bit more now, but later on when your budget can allow it, you can SLI 2 8800.

Ok, well I found a BFG NVidia GeForce 9600 GT OC 512mb for about the same price, is this a bad card or is it worth the investment? I'm completely unsure which to get. Sadly, any GeForce 8800 I can find at my local stores are about 300$ and I just don't have that sort of cash at the moment, I'm actually pushing my budget with either of these two cards.

    newegg.com

and the 9600 is crap. Don't assume that simply because the first number in the card series is higher, that the card is better / faster.

Most of the 8800 GT are $200 or less.  Just go to newegg if your retail stores are too high.  The 9600 is a waste.

I didn't assume I simply asked if it was, seeing as how it was under 200$ I figured something had to be wrong with it.

    the 9600 is not crap

its a cheap card with great performance, it even outperforms the 8800 gt with high lvls of AA/AF enabled

now the 9800 gtx is crap...

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Well I found two GeForce 8800GT's at a local shop for my price range but the only reserve i'm having is one is a PALIT and the other is a EVGA, and I've never really seen either before, any recommendations?

Go with the 8800 gt from www.tiger.com. You can't go wrong for $170. I picked up 2 and am running in SLI with great results.

Yea, you can usually find these things cheaper online than at a local store. www.tiger.com or newegg.com are good places. The brand matters usually and I've had pretty good experiences with EVGA cards. PALIT aren't bad either, I think they have a line of pre-overclocked cards if you're into that sort of thing.

I am having great performance with the EVGA card. They  sell XFX as well, which is a good brand.

Your prossesor is fine, your ram seem fine, depending what OS you are running for XP is enough, you might want to add another gig to it, but even so i have 4gb plugged in but as far i can tell only 3.4 is being used.

Definitly do not buy a 8600 card, it'sa budget card for people who just want to experiance DX10 with the same performance your card already has, maybe just a tiny bit better then your card, i know my card even out performes the 8600 and i have a 7950GT/512, i am personaly  waiting for the 9Gx2 cards as going to any of the new 8 series wont do me that much good other then increase of about 15/20% thats if i would go GTX on the 8 series.

But going from a 7600 card to a 8800 series card will be good for you to actualy notice a good difference in performace, with a 8600 you wont notice that much difference between the card you already have other then being able to use DX10 and maybe a slight increase in AA.

Also if you want to go Sli be aware of your power, what are you using now? for Sli atleast i think you should have a minimum of around 700w, maybe even more, definitly not less, else be prepared for lots of CTD, complete reboot ect ect.....And keep things cool inside your rig as heat is devistating to your system which also can cause multible errors within the system.

Also be very aware if you are a frequent beta tester as much of beta code gets in your memory and may cause lots of errors aswell ,so for those who frequently play beta versions of games make sure you replace your memory sticks atleast once and if possible twice a year, that is if you are playing beta many times. Don't worry if you play a beta or 2 a year, but those of us who play many beta's you need to really take care of the memory banks.
