I am a fairly new subscriber to this site, but i am a long time subscriber to DAOC. I can honestly tell you that the pvp in Camelot is very different when compared to many MMO's. First off, the basic setup is a Realm vs Realm type of PVP that is unique to Mythic Studios. Three realms all pulling and tugging at each other for control of towers, keeps, and relics. With this in mind, Camelot is PVP with a reason. Many, if not most, MMO's have PVP that really has no bearing on the rest of the world or game. The Realm vs Realm (RVR) in DAOC ultimately is about relic control, in a Frontier area. The PVE areas are free from ganking, but are reliant on the success of the RVR zones. Ya see, Relics give bonuses to Melee and Casters in the entire realm. So the PVE types benefit with doing more damage because of the work of the RVR's. This makes leveling, questing, and dungeons more feasable. At the same time, not defending your relics will cause the entire realm to LOSE bonuses to Melee and Caster Damage. This affects RVR and PVE alike. So, whichever realm controls the most relics, has the most bonus power. This makes DAOC really stand out compared to other PVP systems.
Another interesting aspect of the RVR system for DAOC is that there are Three Realms. So now your realm has TWO enemies positioning to take your tower and keeps and your relics. This also gives your realm TWO offensive fronts to tackle. There is a level of strategy involved that truly surpasses traditional PVP. It is not uncommon to see a 100 to 200 zerg of ally's running thru the frontier pushing an equally threatening group of enemies out of critical keeps and towers. The battles can be very intense at times.
So, if you like Mass Battles with battering rams, boiling oil, and an actual reason for PVP, then DAOC is the best PVP game out there.....for now. See, Mythic has teamed up with Electronic Arts and are working on Warhammer Online. This is expected to be a more intense version of the already successful RVR style of PVP found in DAOC. They have taken all of the aspects loved by the players of Camelot and intergrated, as well as, expanded them for Warhammer. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. So you might wanna look into both.
In regards to Vista, Yes you can play DAOC on Vista. Works just fine for my buddies that are using it. Personally, I'm still happy with XP Pro so I havent checked yet.
Been back to Dark Age on my laptop with Vista and it works flawlessly. There were a few uploading errors at first , but the support site fixed them all for me.
I think that Dark Age of Camelot still has by far the best pvp system available. It's a shame the population is dwindling, at least compared to the times of old. The 3 realms competing for 1 goal was I think a great community builder. It gave people a common thing to focus on. Nobody as of yet has copied it and I'm slightly hopeful that that Warhammer will do something even though it's only 2 opposing sides and not 3. But I guess the Warhammer lore only allows for Order and Chaos, and I'm not all that familiar with its back story and lore to properly comment on it. I'm just going to wait and see.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
When there was close to 2000 people per server(2500+ on Merlin and Lancelot) it was a blast. Even at 1500 it was a blast. The fun started waning when 1000 and fewer people are on a server/cluster. That's the drawback to a pvp/rvr game.
I couldn t think of one game that really comes close to DAOCs pvp. To this day i re sub on and off and always have fun in it. That said when the servers were packed it was even more fun. There is a new server come out in aug/sept called "Origins" server and they re taking the frontiers back to the old days(which i liked better). There will still be some things in the newer DAOC on this server but generally it will have to feel the old times had. I for one will be playing the new server alongside WAR when it s released. Now lets hope this rumor thats been around that they ll package deal sub price with WAR and DAOC, something along the lines SOE does.
Organized pvp? awesome! Random PVP? ........Its kill anyone or everyone so i guess its awesome.
It's 3 factions fighting for control of the Frontier. You can't kill people of the same faction (realm) as you unless you duel them. Some people might not like that but to that I say, there's 2 other realms for you to beat on.

Is this the best PvP MMO? If not, what is? And does DAoC run on Vista?
Best PvP, imo.
You have a FFA PvP Server, which is has real low population right now and a PvE Server.
Besides that 2 special servers, the other servers are Faction PvP. There are 3 Factions (Realms). Each Realm has like private PvE zones where only the Realm people can go and no one will be able to attack you, unless is a duel with a fellow realm mate (which you have to accept). Then there are PvP areas (Battlegrounds for non-50 lvls, The Frontiers which is the main place where the Realms compete for Relics and where people kill each other, and Dungeons -PoC, Lab, DF).
If you go into one of these PvP areas, you can be attacked by any person from the other realms.
You will discover there are zerg, groups, and solos. Soloing is not easy but it's doable and if you finally learn how to be a true soloer, then you may have lots of fun. If you make friends and get in a guild, you may be running in groups with the same people... maybe becoming an 8man group. 8man group are groups in which usually the same people play in it, they are templated and speced (trained) for the benefit of the group. PuG in the other hand are groups made up randomly by people looking for groups... in the middle of that two extremes are all kind of greys heheh
Zergs are just zergs.
As in any PvP game get ready to get ganked a lot. People will add to your fights (the game rules allow it) to help you or to help killing you. Zerg will run over groups and soloers. Groups will run over soloers. Sometimes a group will kill a zerg hehe
It's a fun game. More complex than others games (like WoW), imo. You will discover there are more than 40 classes. Most of the classes from one Realm are not similar to the classes in the other Realms. So you actually have almost 40 unique classes. Lately, and sadly imo, archers were revamped and now they are very similar in the 3 Realms... but still different.
All this is obviously jsut my opinion. DAoC has the best PvP implementation I found so far.
I think the most overlooked thing that makes DAOC so great, and totally different than games like WOW and AOC is that each realm has totally different classes and require totally different group makeups to do what you want to do. There are just so many classes to choose from that all do different things.
It's really like playing 3 different games and the fact that the RVR actually effects the game is huge.
I think that is why I can't play other games like WOW and maybe even AOC later. The PVP in WOW is completely pointless, the classes are the same for both sides and AOC also has the same few classes fighting each other.
One of the big gripes about DAOC, classes and balance is actually what makes the game so great to me since all the classes arent cookie cutters and now that levelling is very very easy and gold is easy to come by a character can be easily leveled up in a few days to Molvik for the best BG in all games.
i have played since release on EU and US servers and always come back, im currently playing this on my Reaver Phuse on Albion/Lamorak, it is the best PvP game ive ever played hands down
Currently playing : Darkfall Character name : Aeola Anara Played: Almost every P2P MMO you can get your hands on, notably: Daoc, SWG, LOTRO, WAR, AoC + Dozens more
If you just want to PVP then the only choice is Gareth/Lamorak/Ector cluster.
There are still 1000-1500 online in the evenings on that cluster and will likely be even more with everyone quitting AOC and Warhammer coming out soon.

true that, quitting aoc for giving the trial another go
Yeah I definitely reccomend the classic cluster for some activity. I was away for a while and came back to DAoC after playing WoW and trying AoC. (AoC was an epic failure).
There always seems to be a good amount of people around and usually some RvR activity going on. I've found a lot of friendly people in the community willing to teach a noob some tricks and help me with some RvR tactics.
I've played a lot of MMOs and I usually favor PvP play and for my money the MMO market has no better game to experience PvP (RvR) than DAOC. Hopefully WAR will not dissapoint in that area either, I'm rooting for them.
My exposure to DAOC was on a private server....Everyone was made instant level 50 and everyone was given their epic gear so they would be fairly equal......My first siege (if thats what their called) I got killed in one shot several times.....After about 30 minutes I left and deleted my character and never returned......I had always heard how awesome the game was supposed to be but my first impression is that the combat isnt fair to alot of players.......Im sure if I knew the nuances I could have killed a player that had jsut entered teh game in one shot also but what is the point of that kind of combat?? I jsut never saw any real strategy in DAOC and whats the point of PVP if you have no chance?? To me the only real solid PVP games are FPS where everyone has similar gear and weapons and it takes skill to beat someone..... I have never seen an MMO with PVP where skill was the deciding factor......I would say in 9+ years of playing MMOs I have probably had about 10 fair fights in PVP.......Either the other player was significantly higher than my character of they were light years ahead gear wise.......I also saw many cheats used in PVP taht should have banned alot of players but the games never enforced them.....And yes WOW was the worst culprit for the cheating.....
Private servers are nothing like the real thing, I've played on one and it had barely 1/8 the population. If you play the ACTUAL game you will have to level up In the time it takes to get to 50 you gain knowledge about your class and become better at it. You have a skewed conception of the real game, try it and you may have a different view.

Theocritus,
what DAoC is for the RPG-crowd, is Planetside for the FPS-crowd.
I don´t know if it is still populated, didn´t play it for a long time.
When I played it, there were huge 3-faction-battles (upto 250-300players).
If you didn´t have tested it yet, maybe this one fits more to your style.
