Worth getting?

I was at the mall with my best friend yesterday and I was about to purchase the game (because I loved Sid Meier's Pirates, and the whole player-run economy thing ), anyways he tried to talk me out of it, saying it was a horrible game, 'thrown together at the very last second' and 'Not even God himself would forgive anybody who bought it'

Now he did play BETA, but he only did so for an hour but told me that was all the time he needed to know it was a 'piece of programming sh!t' (his exact words) and even said World War II Online was a masterpiece compared to POTBS (or 'Burning Pee' as he has come to coin it)

Anywho, I just came here for a second opinion and to hear from others if it is really that bad of a game.

I would suggest trying to get a buddy key if they are available. I was hugely excited about this game (like you, I love Sid Meiers Pirates)  and then the more and more I read, the more I realised that it was what I was looking for.

I found a couple of good trusted reveiws thatconfirmed that it is not for me, but thats just my opnion. I know there are people enjoying it so see if you can get an invite in some way to check it out for yourself, its the only way for sure that you will know.

    Cheers

Is POTBS a bad game? No.

is POTBS a good game? No.

Im afraid i just cancelled my subscription until FLS do something about the game. It was released too early IMO which left the end game lacking in a big way.  I played untill i was a lvl 42 Privateer and saw many people quit early because they got bored far 2 quickly due to lack of content.  The econamy was supposed to be a huge factor in this game but it has failed miserably.  The population is falling quickly both because of the fact we have very little to do and the launch of AOC and WAR on the horizon.

Its a pity because i had high hopes for this game and will come back when FLS actually make it fun to play. The ship battles are fun and sometimes need alot of thought when outnumbered but it all gets too boring all to fast.

I hate the fact that they went into so much trouble to make the ships historically accurate in design and manouverability and then decided to give us durability points on ships(Extra lives), oh that and teleporting between ports suxx.

On a plus note i found the people helpfull and nice........ but all in all at the moment stay clear. not worth the monthly fee IMO.

Okay well umm its not that bad of a game but its not a good game either.  I actualy didn't find techncally wise anything wrong with the "programming" as it went and It was not particularly laggy or crashing every 5 seconds so its possible he meant something else.     However its an MMORPG without a real MMORPG feel I guess.    The ship combat is good and well that's the game so for an mmorpg there is not a lot to do just like wwII online you login join a side and just fight and that's the game.  These are not really "massive multiplayer online role playing games" they are just stand alone games with the mulitplayer thrown in.    So as the person said above its not a bad game, but its not a good one either.    It depends how much you like ship combat lol.   If you can do it for hours and not get borred and do it for months on end with nothing else to do and feel that its worth a monthly fee then its probably going to be okay for you.  If you enjoy more then just one activity then no.   As an economy player I was very very borred very very fast because the game was tossing me into the water with the pvp'ers to do ship combat because that's all there was to the game.

Actually, FLS expects every players doing crafting since every crafting have long cold down time such as 8 hours, so if you want to craft one product, you may need 20 different items, then it will be 160 hours or even longer than that. And traveling between 2 points to transfer your resources to one place also a time sink job. If you do reputation then you will be more capable and it is another heavy weight time sink job.

Whenever I want to login to play POTBS, I thought about the upwind will take me least 1 - 2 hours just to drive my 2 ships from one harbor to another, not even playing yet, I quit to login. If you have only 3 hours to play POTBS then this game may not suits you, you'd need 10 hours everyday to play this game.

every 3 days you click buttons did it for a year lol

once a week you spend an evening sailing around moving your products

The rest of the time is used to bank time.

The crafting system is just a button click.  Very simple.   Apparently there is supposed to be some challenge into studying the economy but it took me 15 minutes to learn and was very every easy to manipulate so there was not much time spent doing that.

a few times a day you camp in front of the auction house (also not particularly stimulating) and buy up the cheap stuff and pick it up once a week.

For me it was every sunday evening while watching tv.   Items sat till I accumulated enough to make sense to pick up and would make a sweep of the map on sunday evening picking it all up.  yes its a time sink but an incredibly borring time sink that i did once a week.  The button clicking part to make an item was after doing nothing for 3 days while you maxed your labour on the structures you had.

The other problem with the economy is that they have this class freetrader that is supposed to be the economy mogul but is in fact a nerfed combatant with very little more "power" on the market except for the ability to see all AH's.  I rolled a privateer to see if it woud be much harder.  It was not it was slightly more time consuming but since the bulk of the game revolves around PVP combat.   Naval officer starts off hated by everyone but to be honest the amount of grinding he does he can turn that around fairly quickly if he stays away from merchant ships.

in any event its not very challenging nor complex nor a reason to buy the game.
