A REAL review of FFXI

Bucs420Bucs420 Member Posts: 28

Ok so i was skimming through some of these threads on FFXI, and it seems like the ones that are quick to dog and put down the game only played to like level 10-30. C'mon does movie critics watch the first 10min of a movie than turn it off and write there review based on the first couple min? No.

So to all the new people looking for a review. Read this thread from people that have actually played to level75 or even in their level 60s for that matter.

People that have actually played the game, please post your opinions or reviews on here.

Ok Final fantasy in my opinion after all this time, is that you will find a very solid game.

It's one of those games that is "hard" to play but it gives great satisfaction when you do. I consider it, from all those mmos i have played the one that focus a lot on the MMO factor.

By the end of the 75 levels you will see that you actually had made a long journey to reach the top, and still has a lot of stories to tell. From quests you missed, to items you haven't got, from stories you haven't discovered there will be something still no matter what level or playtime you have.

It is a hard game no doubt, making gil and levelling, but that too is a challenge and in the end you will end up meeting a lot of people that is the main reason the game is so fun.

A friend is not him who provides support during your failures.A friend is the one that cheers you during your successes.

im actually currently returning after not playing for about a year and im pretty pissed because my old characters and all my gear is gone :(.  However coming from someone who never got to 75 but had SEVERAL jobs to 40 or the 35ish range with thf being 63 i can tell you that this game is alot of fun, under the correct curcumstances.  The game is very group dependant, and thus you have the have the necessary not only bodies, but correct party roles which can at times be a pain in the ass.  To be more specific about the game, the combat is awesome, it is a bit slow but name another game where you are truly able to use all of your abilities in a single battle, or a game where you actually have to have some skill other than macro thrashing (especially as a thf).  The crafting is crap, outright, i love how the crafts arent there for everyone to see, you have to go look it up, keeps botters away; however, not a single craft is worth anything really until higher levels, i just wish you could sell your crafts to an npc for a decent amount but you cant even do that so its essentially a large time and money sink until the later levels.  This however can be counteracted by harvesting all of your own stuff but the ratio of time and effort to results you get from that is clearly in favor of the time/effort.   The job system is simply put awesome; however, i do wish the game consisted of more tanks and at least another viable healer, too often you find yourself unable to grind simply because you lack one of these two key individuals,, sure you can get  away with a war for a while, but eventually they are a DPS class, and the only healer is a white mage unless you have two red mages by chance, sure you can subsitute with a summoner, but it dosent work nearly as well until later levels.  Bottom line..... SE give us more tanks and healers, one healer and two tanks (one of which isnt even intended for that purpose) isnt nearly enough.  The economy, oh man the economy..... so effed up it isnt even funny, or at least when i quit it was, im currently in the process of leveling a new char to see whats it like now but i can say that prior to recently it sucked horribly, the only thing worth selling you had to do what other mmo'ers would consider instances, called BCNM in ffxi to get, or had to basically max out a character to kill the mob that dropped it. I read somewhere that you can now sell items to NPCS for decent amounts, if this is true, thats fucking awesome, would cut out the middle man for players, allowing for a steady economy (or at least steadier).  My only other issue i had was this game was the lack of a community spirit in the sense that unless someone needs to do the same mission or quest you're doing, theres no way in hell you'll get any help save from your guildies.  This can be particularly annoying when doing your AF quests, maybe it was just the server i was on, maybe it was just back then, and hopefully its changed a little bit, but that bothered me.  All that being said i still love the game, it just had too many problems for me to warrant playing it, ill keep grinding this new guy out and see how it goes though.

Masterbrood I see a lot of the things you posted and have to agree. SE kind of dropped the ball with adding another tank with the expansion but they did give us two more healer classes. Scholar is both a blm and a whm and can do both very very well. In a CoP static Im working with atm we have a scholar as our main healer for all of the 50 capped missions and he doesn an amazing job to say the least. On top of that dancer is a great healer class. I was lvling my whm the other day in a pt with a dancer and rdm and all i was doing was casting regen and erase on the tank and bar spells on the party. We were fighting gobs, bats, and flys in gustav tunnel. When the gob would do a bomb toss normally after a fight the whm would cast curaga but the dancer did that for me using tp instead of mp and it was great. I didnt have to cast any debuffs because the rdm was there for that lol. So to be honest i got really really bored. I have to say dancer is one of the coolest jobs introduced. They can do some neat buffs and stuff for the pt with using minimal tp so thats great and they do a lot more damage then any other buff/healing class. A corsair might do more damage but they are strictly a buff/dd job so meh.

On the economy subject SE has gone threw great lengths too disrupt gil seller and they are doing a fantastic job they have banned thousands of accounts associated with gil selling and the economy is stabilizing and i couldnt be more happy about. Items that used to cost upwards of 8-10 mil are now at a affordable 250-300k I love it finally got a haubergon no way could i get one 2 years ago.

Oh yeah everyone loves a brd. I preferred rdm over brd while lvling pld to 75 but im galka and have mp issues. On the other hand i don't know how i would tank 90% of the endgame mobs without my haste spell + march march from the brd gotta love almost max haste gets my flash recast time down to about 24 seconds and shadows can stay up pretty much nonstop depending on the mob.

I have been playing ffxi for 2.5 years.

During that period I have also tried WoW twice. I have checked out other games but, I keep coming back to ffxi.

For me, the part s of ffxi that really captured me were the social/grouping aspect, and the storyline.

Levelling is a learning experience through your first job. Once you have taken a job to a high level, the other jobs get easier to level because you understand exp parties and the dynamics/relationships in a party.

There is  A LOT of end-game content, Enough to keep you occupied for quite a while.

After 2.5 years I have a level 75 Monk,Warrior,Ninja. I have a level 61 Samurai and several jobs at level 37 (Dark Knight, Thief, Dancer, Ranger). I have completed my nation Rank missions, Zilart Missions, Chains of Promathia missions, Treasures of Aht Urgan missions. I have basically finished the game.

I logged on to state that ffxi is a social MMORPG. If you do not posess the ability to form relationships, friendships, and  in general act like a human being, this game will not suit you. If you are in a hurry to "finish" the game prepare to spend a  couple of years playing it.

FFXI is the best, purest MMORPG I have ever played.

That being said it is old.  Old as dirt.  Fossil old.

SO ... I will wait for Squenix's next big project and play it like a summabitch.
