Dear MMO Gamers,
I have played many past MMOs (L, L2, SOTNW, GW, WOW, DAOC, CoH, LOTRO, etc..) and I am a veteran of WOW, L2, and GW. With the annoucement of AoC quite sometime ago, I was excited to try yet another MMO, because honestly I am very pickey and had many issues with past MMOs. I thought, hmmm, maybe AoC will be the one that hits the sweet spot. After playing since release, I have decided to call it quits because of certain issues that annoy me (THIS IS MY OPINION).
I don't have any issues with the amount of resources this game demands from your computer. I have issues with the game itself, meaning its gameplay, community, lore etc.
1)Loading screens truly bother the hell out of me. Even though these loading screens are sometimes 1-3 seconds long, it interrupts the fluidity of the gameplay. Quests that require you to talk to "A" then "B" then kill "C" then talk to "D" gets hell annoying with the numerous loading screens. I believe true mmos don't include these loading screens unless it an instanced area not part of the world or the area is bound to me.
2)AoC has a feat tree, which is something very similar to the talent tree of WoW. The thing that frustrates me is that many of these feats are bugged and do not work or scale properly with increases in levels. Being able to heal for xx amount at level 20 is great, but when ur healing for essentially the same amount 20-30 levels later it is very annoying. This also affects not only healing but other damage feats as well.
3) Transportation is very bad in this game. Horses, which are very expensive, are completely not worth getting because they are not that fast compared to a sprinting player. Players also deliberatly ask to be killed so that they resurrect at the entrance of the "instanced" zone. Rhinos and Mammoths are practically just for show and sieges, which currently are absent for obvious reasons.
4) The lack of explanation for what skills and attributes actually do. I would greatly appreciate it if Funcom could clarify what exactly and by how much certain atts. like magic rating, def rating, and etc. do to the character.
5) The game is very buggy( I understand it was just released but this gets annoying). I have been stuck in loading screens many times that require me to Ctr Alt Del and end process to get out. In instances, some mobs are glitched and evade all your attacks and just walk around, sometimes this mob being an important aspect of a quest. I would also like to mention how you can swim up and down waterfalls.
A summation of all these annoyances and some that I have not discussed have somehow enervated my stone cold MMO character. None of these aspects are devastatingly destructive toward the game. But these tiny tiny little things constantly interrupt my gameplay. On an ending note I would just like to point out other things that bother me in a list format:
1. gear( level 80s dont look special at all), they could make gear more interesting instead of a sheet of leather.
2. no outstanding rewards or punishments in PVP
3. nothing to show-off about (gear, mount, title)
4.PVP ( combos require you to stand still, therefore battles have pratically become two barbs running around in circles spamming white damage).
P.S. THIS IS MY OPINION AND I DISCUSS THE REASONS I AM QUITTING AOC. I HOPE SOME NEW MMO WINS MY HEART. god im bored, but I just cant stand AoC.
Comments
i think the game may indeed improve a lot to fix some of these issue. Hopefully theyll figure out the instance dilemma too.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I can see you have many issues with the game, like you said thats your opinion, my opinion about some of your points I wanted to touch on. I don't know what game or games you are currently playing, so my points ar merely a comparison to WOW, L2, and EQ2 and most of the other mmo's that have been out for awhile now. Not all of this is in the order you gave, but you will understand when I talk about the different points.
1. Loading zone cuts into fluidity of the game. WoW is no different than loading zones when you have to fly on a gryphon for 15 - 20 minutes. EQ2 has load screens and it is still a top rated mmo. I will take a 30 second load <----how long I wait) over a 15 -20 minute gryphon ride anyday.
2. If you say you are a hardcore mmo player then you would know that going from A to B to C to D etc..is the same thing as a chain quest.
3. The transportation in this game if you ordered early was FREE, but lets say you didn't. Buying a mount in this game is way way way cheaper than trying to buy a mount in WOW (800g-just for training, doesnt include mount, 5000g just for epic training, yes you get a free mount if you knock out the faction quest) <---now thats just rediculous!! I don't know of many other mmo's that have mounts that fight at all, so that didn't make any sense to me.
4. The game has bugs, Yes I can agree with that but how many mmo's can you name that aren't buggy at release. WOW, L2, and EQ2 were all nightmares at release. The game just came out about 3 weeks ago, all the bugs will get fixed if people just relax. Any true mmo player would understand that. I am not saying you aren't a true mmo player, you might be. From all the games you listed above you should have a great understanding of what to expect from a new release and launch day!!
As you have said above that your comments are your opinion but sometimes you have to take a step back and ask yourself "Is this the 1st game you ever had issues with" I would hope you would agree that most all past released games have had issues.
If this game had been out a year or two then I would def agree with you but it hasn't, 3 weeks is hardly enough time to pass opinions about flaws without allowing the developer to address the problems and fix them.
Production aimed for 250k players. Probably the retail sales already refunded the game. The game is on its way, no matter what people think or want or like to whine about.
You have some great points. I do understand that the AoC has jsut recently been released and usually new releases include many bugs, which I mentioned. I would just like to make some additional points.
1.Loading Screens. In wow yes flying takes a lot of time, but it is a dynamic process, which you can see other players fighting below you, see questgivers you may fly over, mining nodes, etc. Also flight length is determined by how far you are going. In AoC, there is a loading screen for moving through a door in front of me, wow they simply removed doors. Using the Path of Asura in AoC also requires a loading screen, whereas in WoW, as long as your on the same continent there is no loading screen. I am not saying that loading screens are absolutely degrading the game. Im just saying I would like to enter and leave a simple home without 10 sec downtime.
2.I understand this is a chain quest, and I have no problem with that. The problem I have is the loading screens in between. These quests involve simply jumping back and forth between a inn and just outside the inn, which involve annoying loading screens. In wow (hate to keep using this game as a comparison but..) you can just enter a inn talk to the npc, leave the inn and talk to another npc, and walk back in w/o loading screens.
3.Transportation. I did order early and I did get a free mount, but the free mounts are no means efficient traveling, and more on the lines for looks. WoW epic mounts are very expensive, indeed, but all other mounts are not that difficult to get compared to the WoW economy. 3g for a horse at level 40 is really really expensive and it doesnt improve speed that much. Fighting on mounts is something I don't really emphasize, because it is definetly something new, but you can't really enjoy it (basically button mashing on a mount). In wow they're implenting flying mount combat.
4. I understand it has just been released, and bugs are glitches are inevitable.
Other things that you have not countered that put AoC at a huge disadvantage to the MMO community is the lack of gear, inability to show-off achievements, pvp combat, which are all mentioned in my original post.
