    ddr3 is the new ram standard.  Only the high end mobos are supporting it atm, its still pretty new. 

    It really depends on how much you want to spend, and what your needs are.  Things to consider:

    What chipset you want ( you probbably want to look at x38/x48 or 750i/780i/790i chipsets)

    If you plan on overclocking or not.

    what speed ram you want.

    do you plan on upgrading to SLI and using 2/3/4 video cards.

    what kinda connections and expansions do you need.  How many Sata ports for HDDs, or IDE connections and PCI and PCI-x slots etc.

    Also, make suer the form factor fits whatever case you are using.

    Then pick your ram based on what mobo you have.
