As the subject says I'm lookin for a game that requires skill. Let me give you an example.
Everquest: Group: Enchanter (me), Monk (brother), Warrior (noob), Cleric. We were in our high teens fighting orc legonaires. We pull 4 of them and our Warrior goes afk (without telling us, he just sits down while these 4 guys run at us). We suddenly realize we have 4 guys coming at us and the Warrior is gone. My brother tanks one (1), I mez one (2) and mind control another (3) to have him tank (4). Cleric busy healing my brother. 3 dies, so I mind control 2 and have him finish off 4, then help with 1. 1 dies, release mind control and finish off 2. /boot warrior.
So yeah, basically I want a game where you can be overwhelmed, but with some quick good playing it works out (but maybe not all the time). Something that will create good stories. My wife and I want to play this game together though so it needs to be fairly easy to learn the basics. I've played EQ, SWG (when it was good), WoW, Maple Story, and Puzzle Pirates (fairly amusing, but quickly boring).
WoW is too simple for me I think so we quit that. Tried the trial for EQ, but the UI is annoying and the graphics aren't that great anymore. So yeah 1) skill, 2) decent graphics, 3) fairly easy to learn.

EVE
Guess I have more requirements than I thought. Eve looks fun, but I don't think my wife would enjoy it. We want more ground based (she won't like flying). Also, PVP doesn't interest us as much. Yes, we will engage in it every now and then, but don't want it all the time.
FF11. fun times. the graphics aren't top notch anymore, but are still pretty good. It fits all your other requirements though.
Try lotR.....
I looked around the FFXI site. Is there a trial version at all?
no. unfortunately i don't think they've ever even offered a trial
i enjoyed LotRO alot as well...not sure about a trial on that one.
I can't believe people are recommending LOTRO. Trust me OP, I know what you're looking for and you won't like a storyline MMO like LOTRO or AoC. They are more dumbed down and hand-fed than WoW and EQ2.
Eve was a good recommendation. If you don't want to play that, you may have to settle for Vanguard, WoW, or EQ2. I'd recommend EQ2. Vanguard is on its way out (still buggy, very underpopulated, and ignored by its developer), and you said you didn't like WoW.
If you get in a decent guild, the upper level raids in EQ2 take a lot of skill and strategy and will remind you of EQ1 if you ever raided, but I wouldn't compare the gameplay too closely otherwise. If you're looking for something to replace EQ1, EQ2 is the best you'll find until a developer decides to make a game that will target player audiences such as you and I.
I guess I'll go try the trial of EQ2 then, hopefully it goes well. If not, I guess I'll read a lot about FFXI to see if I like it since there's no trial. Thanks for the help guys.
A great game that is totally based on skill is Guild Wars. You can only win battles by skill, therefore is the purpose of the 20 level cap. You hVe to pick the appropriate skills to apply to your bar and play with smarts because the other player will have just as good of stats as you will him.
try it out and see if you like it. No monthly fee , just buy it in one of your local stores like wal-mart or Best Buy or Target.
Currently Playing: Guild Wars.
Played:Guild Wars, Dungeon Runners, WoW, WC3, Starcraft, RuneScape, Wurm.
The games that require the most skill are the FPS games, therefore Counterstrike and the likes are what you are looking for.
However, if you're looking for an MMO Jumpgate Evolution is a game which basically a space FPS game.
FFXI for sure. I've heard good things about Vanguard in terms of what you're looking for and I just ordered a copy off of ebay for $6 for that very reason.
Eve is not a good recommendation...it is on par with WoW in terms of challenge.
